Degrees of Comparison

This lesson plan teaches students about degrees of comparison using adjectives. It begins with objectives, references, and materials. The procedure includes preliminary activities like greeting and prayer. Students are divided into groups to participate in a motivation activity involving arranging jumbled letters. The lesson proper has students playing a charades game and analyzing the adjectives they act out. Students learn that adjectives can be in the positive, comparative, or superlative degree depending on what is being compared. The lesson ends with students completing practice exercises identifying the degrees of adjectives in sentences.

What can you say about the changing from

What can you say about the changing from

positive degree to comparative degree with two
syllables?

Let say angry.

Two syllables adjectives form the comparative

degree by changing to word with –er in the ending
of the word or adding more before the word.

More angry or angrier

How about changing from comparative degree to

superlative degree?

Three syllables adjectives form the comparative

degree by changing to word with –est in the
ending of the word or adding “most” before the
word.

Let’s have the word intelligence.

We therefore need to say more intelligent or most

intelligent.
