Events A and B are such that , , find if
a) A and B are two mutually exclusive events. [1 mark ]
b) A and B are two independent events. [2 marks]

32
1 , x >4
[2 marks]
a) Find the probability density function of X.
[3 marks]
b) Find the expected value of X.
[3 marks]
c) Show that the variance of X is . [2 marks]
d) Find P( X > 3) .
4. Length of time (minutes) taken to service an ambulance between ride is known to
be normally distributed. The frequency table below summarizes the length of time
(minutes) taken to service an ambulance between rides on 24 occasions chosen at
random.
Time (minutes) Frequency
53≤ x ≤ 57 2
58≤ x ≤ 62 5
63≤ x ≤ 67 8
68≤ x ≤ 72 6
73≤ x ≤ 77 3
a) Calculate unbiased estimates of the mean and variance of the length of
time (minutes) taken to service an ambulance between rides. [3 marks]
b) Find a 98% confidence interval for the mean length of time taken to
[4 marks]
service an ambulance between rides.
5. What is meant by “significance level”. [2 marks]
The numbers of Influenza A cases reported for the first 4 months of a year, 2022 in Putrajaya
is shown in the table below.
Number of cases 0 1 2 3 4 5 ≥6
Number of days 3 12 20 28 23 18 16
Test at the 5% significance level whether the Poisson distribution with a parameter of 3.5 is suitable
model for the data. [8 marks]
6. What is meant by “critical region” and define the meaning of “null hypothesis”
in hypothesis testing. [2 marks]
A company pack sweet in packets labelled 1 kg. The mean and the standard
deviation of the masses of 200 packets selected at random are 998g and 16g
respectively. Perform a test, at 5% significance level, to determine whether the
mean of mass of all packets of sweets packed by the company is less than 1 kg. [6 marks]
Section B [15 marks]
Answer any one question in this section.
7. Katrina, who has been tested positive for immune deficiency, is hospitalized. Her
immunization level, must be monitored, varies throughout the day. The results
from a sample of 75 readings, x, taken at random times over a week, are
summarized by
[3 marks]
a) Calculate unbiased estimates of the population mean and population
variance of the immunization level
[3 marks]
b) Calculate a symmetric 97% confidence interval for the population
mean of the immunization level events.
c) With proper assumption, test at the 5 % significance level whether
Katrina’s mean immunization level, is greater than 6.0. Hence,
find the smallest value of significance level at which the test will [6 marks]
result in the rejection of the null hypothesis in part (c).
d) Find the set of values for which it would be accepted that
at the 1 % significance level. State giving a reason, whether the
conclusion of the test in part (c), would be valid if it could no longer [3 marks]
be assumed that immunization level has a normal distribution.

8. In a shooting qualifying competition, a shooter is given three chances to shoot at
the target. The probability that a shooter hits the target is 0.7. The probability that
he will hit the target in the following shot is half of the probability of the previous
successful shot. However, if a shooter missed a target, the probability of success in
the following shot is 0.6. Find the probability that a shooter
a) successfully hits the target in all shot,
[2 marks]
b) hits the target consecutively two times, given that the shooter has exactly
hit the target twice. [5 marks]
c) The grades of 250 students in both Mathematics and Science were studied,
following data is obtained from the survey.
Mathematics Grades
A B C
Science A 28 32 27
Grades B 37 48 19
C 15 20 24
Using a 5% significance level, carry out a chi-squared test if there is an
association between Science and Mathematics result. State by giving a
reason, whether it can be concluded that the students who obtained good
results in Science were also performing well in Mathematics. [8 marks]
