Muscular System Anatomy Overview

1. The muscular system is responsible for all types of body movements through muscle contraction. There are three basic muscle types: skeletal, cardiac, and smooth. 2. Skeletal muscles function to support the body, allow movement, maintain body temperature, assist circulation, and protect organs. They are organized into sarcomeres, myofibrils, fibers, fascicles and whole muscles. 3. The sarcomere is the contractile unit containing overlapping actin and myosin filaments that form crossbridges, producing striations visible microscopically.
