English Tenses Explained: A Guide

There are 12 tenses in English used to indicate time and circumstances. The tenses are divided into 3 main categories - present, past and future. Each of these categories contains 4 tenses to specifically express actions that are ongoing, completed or planned. The tenses are formed using combinations of verbs and auxiliary verbs along with considerations of time frames and aspects.

ENGLISH TENSES

The word ‘Tense; means time. Came from the Latin word ‘Tempus’ which means time.
Tense shows the time of the action(verb).
There are three (3) principal(main) tenses in English.
1. The Present
2. The past
3. The Future
Each of these three tenses have 4 tenses. (Total tenses 3 x 4 = 12)
