Introduction:

Explain the importance of Local Area Network (LAN) connections in computer


networking. Discuss how LAN connections work and the different types of LAN
connections.

I. Definition and Types of LAN Connections (20 minutes)

1. Define LAN and its importance in computer networking.


2. Introduce the different types of LAN connections, including wired and wireless
connections.
3. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each type of LAN connection.

II. Familiarize the Steps in Making LAN Connections (40 minutes)

1. Explain the steps in making LAN connections.


2. Demonstrate how to connect a network switch to a computer using an Ethernet cable.
3. Show how to cut the Ethernet cable to the appropriate length.
4. Demonstrate how to strip the outer insulation from the cable and expose the inner
wires.
5. Show how to arrange the inner wires according to the TIA/EIA 568B wiring standard.
6. Show how to insert the wires into an RJ-45 connector and use a crimping tool to attach
the connector to the cable.
7. Explain how to test the cable with an Ethernet cable tester.

III. Practice (60 minutes)

1. Distribute network switch, Ethernet cables, RJ-45 connectors, cable cutters, cable
strippers, crimping tools, and Ethernet cable testers to students.
2. Instruct students to make LAN connections following the steps demonstrated.
3. Walk around and provide assistance as necessary.
4. Once students have completed their LAN connections, have them test their cables with
the Ethernet cable tester.
5. Have students connect their LAN connections to other computers in the classroom to
test the network.
