3. The Philippine History:

From Spanish Colonization to Democratic Government
Ferdinand Magellan first landed in the Philippines in 1521. The country was granted to the
United States in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. In 1935 the Philippines
became self-governing, but their independence was delayed by World War II and the
invasion of Japanese troops. Eventually, U.S. forces liberated the islands in 1944-45, and
the Republic of the Philippines was proclaimed in 1946. In 1965 Ferdinand Marcos was
elected president. He declared martial law in 1972, which lasted until 1981. After 20 years
Marcos was driven from power in 1986. Corazon Aquino became president and instituted
a period of democratic rule in the country.
Ask: Who were the first colonizers of the country? Who else colonized our country after
the Spaniards?
Say: Since we discovered certain events from history to the most current, this text shows
time-order text-type.

4. Different Types of Schools

Schools can usually be classified as either public, private religious, private nonreligious, or
alternative. Public schools are funded by the government, and the majority of students in
the country attend them. Private religious schools are based around a particular faith, such
as Catholicism, Judaism, and others. Religion is part of the everyday lives of the students
and they also learn about their faith in addition to regular subjects. On the other hand,
private nonreligious schools do not receive state funding and have the ability to make their
own rules. Alternative schools can be made up of a variety of different categories, such as
distance learning programs or technical or vocational schools, which are typically self-
paced and hands-on.
Ask: What are the different types of schools according to this text? What are each
features?
Since it explains characteristics according to different school types, then this is a
classification text-type
E. Discussing new concepts and A. CLASSIFICATION TEXT
practicing new skills #2 Classification text, also known as text tagging or text categorization, is the process of categorizing
text into organized groups. In this type of text, items or ideas are sorted according to commonalities.
Also, in this type of text, the writer presents the overall idea then splits it into parts to provide clarity
and description. Readers can recognize classification text through signal words such as: first, finally,
to begin, next, in addition, on the other hand, for example, or then.
Study the example:

The text presented above is a classification text type.

The details are classified into categories of dogs such as being wild or domesticated, having a
particular breed, and serving a specific purpose.

The signal words used are on the other hand, categorized, and classified.

B. EXPLANATION TEXT
Explanation text provides descriptions to looking at things like causes and reasons. They move
beyond retelling of what happened, such as in a simple report, to address the why and how of what
happened. Explanatory texts usually tell how or why things occur with a general statement that
introduces the topic to be explored Time connectives used such as first, after, then, next, and finally.

Study the example below.

The details are presented in a series of sentences that explains why and how the rain forms.
C. ENUMERATION TEXT Enumeration text is one which presents ideas by listing the kinds,
characteristics, classes, types, parts, ways, groups, and other information of a certain thing. It
usually starts with the statement of the general subject that is broken down into parts, classes, etc.
These parts are introduced by signal words such as the following, first, next, and so on; or they may
be listed using commas or enumerated one by one like what is shown in the example below.

D. RECOUNT TEXT
When the text presents events that are arranged in their order of occurrence in time, this text is
called recount. A recount retells an experience or an event that happened in the past. A recount may
inform, entertain, reflect, or evaluate. A recount may focus on a specific section of an event or retell
the entire story. A recount should always be told in the order that things happened.

Study the example below.

The text type presented above is a recount text.

The details are arranged in chronological order.
The transitional/signal words used are then and after.
F. Developing Mastery Directions: Identify what text types are the given in the texts below by completing
(Lead to Formative Assessment) the puzzle below each item.

1. My first experience in cooking rice was funny. I remember putting four cups of
rice in a cauldron or “kaldero” and completely filling it in with a water. Then I left to
