CH101 Tutorial Sheet 2

This document provides a tutorial sheet for a chemistry course. It outlines 5 learning outcomes including writing balanced equations, performing stoichiometric calculations, and calculating the number of protons, neutrons and electrons in atoms and ions. It then provides 7 practice problems related to these outcomes, including mole calculations, percent composition problems, limiting reactant problems, and ion calculations.

CH101 Semester 1

Tutorial Sheet 2
Learning Outcomes

At the end of this activity students should be able to:

1. Write balanced chemical equations.

2. Calculate moles and identify the limiting reactant to determine the amount of product
formed.
3. Apply C1V1 = C2V2 formula in volumetric analysis.
4. Calculate percentage yield.
5. Calculate the number of protons, electrons and neutrons

1. 0.500 g of a sample which contains copper is analyzed iodometrically. Copper (II) is

reduced to copper (I) by the iodide. What is the percent copper in the sample if 20.00 cm3
of 0.1 M sodium thiosulphate solution is required for the titration of the liberated iodine?

2. A sample of 0.6760 g of an unknown compound containing barium ions (Ba2+) is

dissolved in water and treated with excess of Na2SO4. If the mass of BaSO4 precipitate
formed is 0.4105 g, what is the percent by mass of Ba2+ in the original unknown
compound?

3. Marble (calcium carbonate) reacts with hydrochloric acid solution to form calcium
chloride solution, water and carbon dioxide. What is the percent yield of carbon dioxide
if 3.65 g of the gas is collected when 10.0 g marble reacts?

4. How many millimeters of 0.55 M HCl are needed to react with 3.7 g CaCO3?
2HCl (aq) + CaCO3 (s) → CaCl2 (aq) + CO2 (g) + H2O (l)

5. Calculate each of the following quantities:

a) Molarity of a solution prepared by diluting 27.0 cm3 of 0.150 M potassium chloride to
150.0 cm3
b) Molarity of a solution prepared by diluting 35.71 cm3 of 0. 0756 M ammonium
sulfate to 500 cm3
c) Final volume of a 0.05M solution prepared by diluting 10.0 cm3 of 0.155 M lithium
carbonate with water
6. When 153 g methane (CH4) and 43.0 g chlorine gas undergo a reaction that has an 80.0 %
yield; what mass of chloromethane (CH3Cl) forms? Hydrogen chloride is the other
product.

7. Calculate the number of protons, neutrons and electrons in the following atoms and ions:
12
6C (b) 40
20Ca (c) 40
20Ca
2+
(d) 32
16S
