D.Abstraction Let us discuss…
Well, the pliancy of a bamboo tree can also be an identified characteristic of
human beings especially of the Filipino people. One’s pliancy can be seen or
noticeable when one goes through some complicated situations. Let’s proceed.

 Read the literary piece, “Pliant as a Bamboo”. Observe how the story
reflects the Filipino characteristics. ( Please refer to Quarter 3-Module
3 for the excerpt and related questions)

For emphasis…
 Let’s look back to the excerpt of the story about “Pliant Like the
Bamboo”.
 How do the Filipino culture, history and environment influence its
writing?
We can see that the writer alluded the pliant bamboo to the ability of the
Filipinos to “bend” through difficult times and be able to survive because of
their resiliency. Even if it is not clear in the title of the story but as the writer
skillfully wrote, he made an example the hurdles that Filipinos underwent in
the past in the hands of the Spaniards and Americans and how they were able
to survive it all.
So, we can see here that the writer who is a Filipino makes use of his own
culture and history to come up with a beautiful and relatable piece.
In a Prezi presentation by Alex Church, he wrote, “Culture appears in all
fiction books. With every setting comes a societal influence. The things
around and occurring during the period of book writing impacts the story in
the way people act, speak and practice every day events.”
As for historical influence, Ashley wrote in her article, “History plays a
fundamental role in shaping literature: every novel, play or poem one reads is
influenced by the political context in which it is written, the people that the
author knows and the wider society that frames the entire work.”
E.Valuing: Finding
