Exploring America's Whitopias

Rich Benjamin took a road trip through some of the whitest towns in America located in Utah, Vermont, and Maine. In these predominantly white areas, known as "Whitopias", he encountered signs of racial bias such as Confederate flags and resistance to immigration. However, he also found that most residents were not overtly racist, but had unconscious biases. He believes America can have systemic racism even without individual racists, and that while progress has been made on diversity since the 1970s, more work remains to be done to overcome biases ingrained in institutions from earlier eras.
