1. Strength of Materials
General objective: - Calculate the induced stresses in a rigid body which is subjected to various
load and loading conditions; & determine the allowable strength of components subjected to
load.
Understanding and Application: - Basic concepts in mechanics of materials; (2)
Understanding: - Stability criteria of compression members; (1)
Application and Analysis:-Strength and deformation calculations of loaded members; (2)
Analysis and Evaluation: - Design methods of simple machine members. (2)
2. Fluid Mechanics
General objective: - provides basis for understanding fluid behavior for engineering design and
control of fluid systems and to determine resultant interactions of flows and engineered and
natural systems.
Remembering and Understanding: - (3)
permits students to understand the basic concepts, principles, laws, observations, and
models of fluids at rest and in motion,
Provides basis for understanding fluid behavior for engineering design and control of
fluid systems,
Understand the principles of operation of flow measuring instruments, conduct
measurements, evaluate the data and draw conclusions
Enables students learn methods for computing head losses and flows in simple pipes and
channels.

Identify, formulate and solve engineering problems involving compressible fluid flows

circulation, resistance (viscous, turbulent), boundary layers, and separation with

Helps students develop competence with mass, energy and momentum balances for
determining resultant interactions of flows and engineered and natural systems,
Enables students develop bases for correlating experimental data, designing procedures,
and using scale models of fluid flows,
3. Engineering Thermodynamics
General objective: - Apply thermodynamic concepts to describe the performance of the
individual components of an engineering system, e.g. a power plant, a jet Engine, etc., and
then relate that information to the overall performance of.
Understanding: - Understand the relationship between thermodynamic systems; Properties;
Processes; Heat and work as articulated by the Laws of Thermodynamics; (2)
Application, Analysis and Evaluation: - (4)
Apply the conservation of energy to thermodynamic systems
Explain how Carnot cycle applies to heat engines and refrigeration cycles
Apply the concept of Heat transfer correlations; Radiative heat transfer; Black and Grey
bodies; Stefan-Boltzman and Kirchhoff's Laws.

• Explain about the Modes of heat transfer.
• State and explain the Laws of Thermodynamics
• Explain about Rankine cycle with reheating and superheating

4. Design of Machine Elements
General objective: - Design, evaluate & select the composition, shape and dimensions of
machine elements that fulfill functional and strength requirements.
Understanding and Evaluation: - (4)
• Identification or selection of proper safety factor to avoid failure before the expected life
of the component;
• Fatigue life and fatigue strength of machine elements;
• Causes of stress concentration in machine elements;
Application, Analysis and Creation/Synthesis: - (4)
• Analysis of the strength of bolted, welded, riveted and interference fitted joints;
• Design of keys, splines and pins;
• Analysis of pressure vessels, valves and sealing mechanisms; Design of springs.
Understanding, Analysis, Evaluation and Affective: - (5)
• The course enables students understand basic principles of design in the design and
analysis of typical machine elements with particular focus on: Shafts, Couplings, Clutches and
Brakes; Drives: Friction Drives, Belt Drives, Chain Drives and Gear Drives; and Bearings.
5. Theory of Machines and Mechanisms
General objective: - Modeling dynamic systems, and establish equations of motion for them to
solve dynamic problems in electromechanical.
Remembering and Understanding: - Describe different types of linkage mechanisms and their
layout used in mechanical design. (2)

Understanding and Analysis: -Analyze kinematics and kinetic mechanisms and design of
machinery. (2)
Application, Analysis and Evaluation: - Provide knowledge on the cause for vibration and to
perform vibration analysis by developing a mathematical model for vibration analysis. (3)
6. Industrial Automation and Control
General objective: - Design, Model and implement Control systems with appropriate.
Remembering: - Understand and develop different controllers for different applications. (1)
Understanding, Application and Analysis: - (3)
• To design and Analyze process control loops
• To develop complex process loops using P and ID symbols
Understanding, Application and Evaluation: - (3)
• Learn about the some specialized sub-systems like Programmable controllers and their
programming techniques, SCADA systems, Remote Terminal
• Units, fuzzy logic controllers, smart sensors and field bus.

• Learn about the important aspects of interfacing real world (analog and digital) signals
and actuators with PC.
• Learn that Distributed Digital Control is an important field, which has come in a big way
in all industrial control applications.
7. Introduction to Electrical Machines
General objective: - Understand the basic principles of electromechanical energy conversion

• To use such models to analyze power requirements, power capability, efficiency and
operating characteristics,
• To learn and understand inrush currents, harmonics and conditions for parallel operation
and design aspects of transformers

• To learn and understand D.C. armature winding.
• To understand dynamic equations and control aspect of D.C machines.
• To understand salient pole synchronous machine features, reference frame
transformation, d-q axis theory, power/load angle relationship and carry out transient analysis.
• To understand the principle of operation and construction of fractional horsepower
motors.

8. Measurement and Instrumentation Engineering
General objective: - Use various types of measurement, the functions of measuring sensors,
transducers, instruments, and their usage.
Remembering and Understanding: - (2)
• Understand the measurement of resistance, inductance & capacitance using different
bridges like, Whetstone’s bridge; Anderson’s bridge &Schering Bridge.
• Understand the construction of different electronic measuring instruments
Application, Evaluation and Creation/Synthesis: - (3)
• There are different techniques for measuring power & related Parameters.
• Classify the transducers depending on the principle of operation. Realize that the main
objective of this subject is to impart a solid application oriented Knowledge of the technology
spanning the Industrial control instrumentation.

• Understand the construction and working of transducers to measure temperature,
Pressure, flow, force, torque, speed, level and density.
• Select an appropriate transducer for a specific process parameter measurement
9. Design of Electromechanical systems
General objective: - Design, prototype and development of electromechanical systems.
Remembering, Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation: - (4)
• Explain; what is meant by mechatronics and appreciate its relevance in engineering
design, a system and define the elements of measurement systems and the various forms and
elements of open-loop and closed-loop control systems.

10. Embedded Systems
General objective: - Understand fundamentals of digital system components and their design
Remembering and Understanding: - Explain the fundamental differences between
microprocessors and microcontrollers. (2)
Understanding and Application: - Use microcontrollers for any application in the real world,
which involves interfacing microcontrollers to the real time systems. (2)
Understanding, Application and Analysis: - Use the simulators, programmers & debuggers and
also should be able to use the microcontroller kits. (3)
11. Power electronics and Electrical drives

Discuss basic concepts of electronic circuits with the aid of characteristic curves.
