(C hemic a l E ngine er ing)
Time: 2 Hours Max Marks: 70
Note: Answer any Five Questions
(5x14 = 70 Marks)

Bloom Level CO
1 Write in detail thermodynamic consistency test for Vapour RE CO1
Liquid Equilibrium data.
2 Describe about equilibrium ratio concept and explain the RE CO1
procedure to estimate equilibrium ratio from Depriesters
charts.
3 Discuss in detail the factors which are to be considered while AP CO2
selecting the solvent for liquid-liquid immiscible extraction
process. Describe the effects of temperature and pressure on
liquid-liquid immiscible extraction operations.
4 With neat diagram, explain how to determine the number of AP CO2
stages in a multistage countercurrent multistage single
component separation equipment of your choice.
5 Derive the corresponding equation to estimate the minimum AP CO3
theoretical stages using Fenske’s equation. Explain the steps
involved in estimation of minimum theoretical stages.
6 Illustrate in detail about the energy requirements of a RE CO4
separation process.
7 Explain the basic concept of chromatography process. Give AN CO5
the application of chromatography in separation of enzymes
and proteins.
8 In a gel layer controlling cross flow ultrafiltration in a EV CO6
rectangular channel (of length L and equivalent diameter de),
velocity field can be considered uniform at velocity u0.
Assuming, mass transfer boundary layer still growing, obtain
an expression of length averaged Sherwood number and
length averaged permeate flux in terms of Re, Sc and de/L.
Consider, gel concentration is Cg and feed concentration is
Co. Use an integral method with the concentration boundary
layer c/c0 = a1 + a2 (y/δ) + a2 (y/δ)2. where, a1, a2 and a3 are
three constants.
