GUIDE QUESTIONS:
1. How do we prevent another Nurse Cullen from going undiscovered in
our midst?
Nurses are a crucial part of any hospital’s efforts to improve patient safety. But while
nurses play a vital role in patient safety, they are certainly not alone. Patient safety must
be viewed as a collaborative effort that hospital administrators, doctors, and physicians’
assistants are equally engaged in. Only when all healthcare professionals commit to
reducing medical errors will meaningful, measurable improvements be made. We can
prevent another Nurse Cullen from going undiscovered in our midst by having patients
feel secure that when they go to a hospital, they are getting the best healthcare possible
without any risk of harm to their health or, worse, loss of lives.
6 Ways Hospitals Ensure Patient Safety
1. Review staffing policies- Improper or inadequate staffing schedules can contribute to
medical malpractice, which goes against the principle of quality patient care. Nurses
and doctors who work long shifts because of a lack of workforce are more prone to
make wrong decisions, as fatigue or stress can make it difficult for them to think clearly
and act rationally.
2. Work with trusted providers- Hospitals work with an extensive network of medical
professionals, such as equipment manufacturers and providers of health insurance in
the Philippines. It is the hospital’s responsibility to ensure that medical equipment or
services from their partner organizations promote patient care and safety, taking the
matter as seriously as they do.
3. Enforce strict disinfection protocols - The simple act of sanitizing and disinfecting can
go a long way in protecting patients from an infection while undergoing treatment for a
particular medical condition.
4. Use advanced monitoring equipment- Monitoring patients’ conditions closely can
reduce the possibility of accidents and mistakes. To achieve this, hospitals may
consider investing in technologies such as portable monitors and wearable devices that
will make it possible for the staff to know when a patient needs assistance.

5. Verify all medical procedures- Medical errors can put patients’ health in danger,
making a systematic verification process a must-have for any healthcare facility. Before
carrying out any procedure involving patients, medical teams need to call a time out to
examine and check every detail of a patient’s condition and treatment plan.
6. Observe care in handling medicines - Proper storage and dispensing of medicines
are also part of patient safety. Drugs need to be properly labeled, whether they come in
injectables, vials, bottles, or resealable sachets. Storage instructions should also be
followed to prevent heat, air, or light from damaging the medicines.

2. What are the ethical dilemmas that nurse administrators face when
becoming aware of potential harmful activity at their hospital but are
told by management that they must not investigate further nor report
it?
Nursing is an ethical job that is needed throughout the world. It exists in the modern age
as a way to care for and help people and to maximize the way we treat them. Nursing is
also very ethical; each patient is taken care of differently and has different choices
according to their ethics. Nursing is very controversial, both for the patient and the
nurse. Nursing is both a profession and a requirement in today's ever-changing society,
and it has far outpaced society and [Link] should know the truth and demand
common sense laws that respect nurses, protect patients, and don’t force executives to
choose between protecting their institution from lawsuits and protecting patients from
harm.
