VOCAL EXERCISES

for Dr. Menefrida Reyes

1. CERVICAL EXERCISES
a. Head Turn
i. Lie on your back on the bed or floor.
ii. Turn your head to the right, looking over your shoulder (i.e. pisngi sa
kama/lapag). Maintain shoulders lying flat on the bed/floor.
iii. Pull cheek towards shoulder to provide slight resistance.
iv. Repeat on the left.
v. Perform 10 times on each side.

b. Head Tilt
i. Lie on your back on the bed or floor.
ii. Place your right hand over the top of your head and pull for your right
ear to touch your right shoulder (i.e. tenga sa balikat). Stretch your
shoulder.
iii. Repeat on the left side.
iv. Perform 10 times on each side.

2. DIAPHRAGMATIC BREATHING (Abdominal Breathing)


a. Lie on your back.
b. Place a book on your lower abdomen.
c. Place one hand on the book and one hand on your chest.
d. Raise the book (i.e. your abdomen) as you INHALE without raising your chest.
e. Try to repeat the same steps - sans the book - while seated upright on a chair.
3. RESONANCE EXERCISES (Semi Occluded Vocal Tract)
a. Humming
i. Take a deep breath and hum (i.e. hmmmm) for 8 seconds
ii. You can also do the following sounds:
➢ NNNNNN
➢ NGNGNGNG
iii. Perform 10 sets of each sound.

b. Straw Phonation
i. Put the straw in your mouth and form a tight seal with your lips around
it.
ii. Take a deep breath and phonate /aah/ through the straw.
iii. Try to maintain phonation for 8-10 seconds.
iv. Change /aah/ to the following vowels
➢ /eeh/
➢ /iih/
➢ /oh/
➢ /uu/
v. Perform 10 sets of each sound.

c. Modified Poor Man’s Spirometer (straw in a cup of water)


i. Put the straw in your mouth and form a tight seal with your lips around
it.
ii. Put the other end of the straw in a cup of water (half-full to avoid
spilling)
iii. Take a deep breath and phonate /aah/ through the straw.
iv. Try to maintain phonation for 8-10 seconds.
v. Change /aah/ to the following vowels
➢ /eeh/
➢ /iih/
➢ /oh/
➢ /uu/
vi. Perform 10 sets of each sound.
