THE RESULTING IMPACT ON WORK IMMERSION PROGRAM AFFECTS
THE CAREER PATH OF GRADE 12 GENERAL ACADEMIC STRAND A MIXED
METHOD RESEARCH APPROACH
CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Background of the study
The Work Immersion Program is an important component of the Senior High School
curriculum in the Philippines, designed to provide Grade 12 General Academic Strand students
with hands-on experience in real-world work environments. The program is intended to prepare
students for their future careers by giving them a taste of the working world and helping them
develop practical skills and knowledge.
This study aims to investigate the impact of the Work Immersion Program on the career
paths of Grade 12 General Academic Strand students. The research approach used in this study is
a mixed-method approach that combines both quantitative and qualitative data collection
methods. The study will examine the extent to which the Work Immersion Program influences
students' career choices and the factors that contribute to these decisions.
Work immersion is a course in the senior high school curriculum that involves hands-on
experience or work simulation in which learners can use their abilities and gained knowledge
related to their track. Work Immersion is an important component of the SHS Curriculum. It can
be carried out in a variety of methods based on the goals and needs of the students. It gives
Senior High School students the opportunity to become familiar with the workplace, simulate
employment, and apply their abilities in areas of specialization or applied topics in an actual
work environment to prepare them for all curriculum exits. The work immersion program has a
significant impact on every senior high school student because it is one of the requirements for
passing the senior high school curriculum. One benefit of work immersion is that it serves as the
internship program for students who will soon be entering college. An internship program is
thought to be one of the most efficient ways to improve students' skills in the field of
specialization they have chosen. Students will undoubtedly be enabled and assisted by the
aforementioned learning experience, which can last between 80 and 320 hours, as they become
familiar with the workplace through workplace simulation and apply their competencies in their
areas of specialization.
According to the DOLE (2016) they strongly affirm that work immersion helps the K–12
Program's objectives to be fully realized. Through this program, students can be prepared for
their big transition into the workforce and become at ease and knowledgeable about business-
related conditions relevant to their area of specialization. Work immersion is beneficial because
it enables Senior High students to determine if what they have chosen in school is what they
want to have as a career. Students experience the social interaction in a work environment that
would help them as they graduate and face real life. a chance to gauge their abilities. This is the
very best part of the senior high school program; it enables students to acquire knowledge and
experience that can help them develop as professional people. However, as someone who
appreciates the value of this program, DepEd really wants to emphasize the significance of work
immersion as a vital point of providing students with a venue to improve them through
experiencing the real stuff on-hand. The study was chosen by the researchers to educate or
broaden the minds of all students participating in the work immersion program. to explain the
resulting impact of a work immersion to the students. Additionally, it will help them understand
why it's a crucial requirement for senior high school.
Catelo (2020) states that they developed an intervention plan that will provide a specific
program to solve the shortcomings in the Work Immersion Delivery Model and to improve and
provide a step-by-step approach to complete the gaps identified during the work immersion
program assessment. In this context, the researcher examined the work immersion program with
corresponding variables and presented an intervention program that intends to cater to teachers,
industry partners, and students in the Pasay City Division to improve the work immersion
program's execution.
Thus, Bustamante (2019) states that BA phenomenological analysis was used in this
research study to determine the lived experiences of Grade 12 students in the General Academic
Strand as Work Immersion pioneers. Thematic analysis was utilized to determine the students'
insights and knowledge during their participation in the Work Immersion program. Laws and
procedures oversee work immersion for senior high school students in the Philippines' new era of
Enhanced Basic Education. It enabled students to apply major classroom ideas or concepts to
real-life working situations, and it significantly fostered the students' qualities and values. It
paved the door for DepEd to concentrate on producing competent senior high school graduates
who are ready for college, work, or entrepreneurship. Furthermore, the students perceived the
curriculum to be meaningful and worthwhile based on their personal experiences. The report also
advises researching students' Work Immersion experiences from various senior high school
strands and courses. With reference to the Work Immersion Guidelines, the Workplace
Immersion Venue is defined as the place where work immersion takes place which conform the
law and the rules and regulations for safety, appropriateness for learning, and availability of
facilities and equipment. Examples of these include offices, factories, shops, LGU offices and
other private establishments. The DepEd Order No.40, series of 2015 emphasized the importance
of carrying out the Partnership-building Responsibilities through applying agreements such as
Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and other related
documents.
The purpose of this study is to determine the resulting impact on work immersion
program affects the path of grade 12 Lahug National High School (Night). This study is about
exploring the impact of the immersion experience. Discovering and exploring the impact of
immersion focuses the purpose of the study.
The researcher would like to recommend the students to have a deeper patience and
understanding regarding this work immersion program. It is very important to cherish and to give
value to this once in a life time experience that might affect their future in a good and bad way
depending on how they accomplished the work immersion program. This research is also
suggesting to always finish the work with passion and sincerity even sometimes they were just
doing nothing.
Calim (2019) says that there is a significant difference in the assessment of the work
immersion program, particularly on collaboration and teamwork and work ethics in work
immersion venues, across the respondents' final grade in work immersion. In addition, there is a
considerable variation in the evaluation of the work immersion program, notably on
collaboration and teamwork in the work immersion venues throughout the preferred curricular
departure.
According to Forbes (2019) the primary goal of the study is to investigate the effects of
the work immersion experience on senior high school students' career path orientation, as this is
the first time the K to 12 Curriculum has been implemented in the Philippine Educational
System. Because some of them were not exposed to the strand they took in senior high school,
the job immersion experience has resulted in some setbacks in terms of their field exposure.
Furthermore, there was a scarcity of academic partner universities.
Theoretical Framework
Influence of Self-determination, Self-efficacy and Leadership on Students’ Work
Immersion Performance
According to Clet et, al. (2021) work immersion is a big part of the Senior High School
curriculum. As a result, it is critical for schools to seek to prepare students for their first industry
exposure; consequently, the purpose of this study was to determine the impact of self-
determination, self-efficacy, and leadership on students' work immersion performance. In the
twenty-first century, Philippine education devised the enhancement of the General Academic
Strand (GAS) program in Senior High School. This course focuses on developing abilities
required for obtaining National Certificates and Certificates of Competency. To make Immersion
meaningful and effective, the study requires schools to be aware of K-12 educational objectives
and processes.
Statement of the Problem
This study will identify the resulting impact of work immersion program affects the
career path of grade 12 students. Specifically, this study aims to answer the following questions:
1. What is the status of the students' performance in work immersion?
2. What are the learnings acquired by the grade 12 students after being exposed in a work-
related are through work immersion?
3. What are the positive and negative impacts of work immersion to the grade 12 students?
