The Endocrine System

The endocrine system consists of glands that secrete hormones to control various body processes. The major glands include the pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, thymus, adrenal, pancreas, ovaries, and testes. Each gland releases specific hormones that influence growth, metabolism, calcium levels, immune function, responses to stress, blood sugar regulation, and sexual development and reproduction. Hormones regulate processes throughout the body, coordinating the functions of organs, tissues and cells, and influencing processes like heart rate, bone growth, and sexual development.

THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM

ENDOCRINE GLANDS AND THEIR HORMONES

The endocrine system contains glands that release the body. The following table
lists all the major glands in the body, functions, locations, and the hormones they
release.

GLAND LOCATION HORMONES FUNCTION

RELEASED
Pituitary At the base -Oxytocin - Stimulates growth
of the brain -Vasopressin - Controls the functions of
-Growth Hormone other glands.
Adrenocorticotropic
Hormone (ACTH)
-Prolactin
-Luteinizing Hormone
-Follicle Stimulating
Hormone (FSH)
Thyroid -below the -Thyroxin -Regulates body metabolism
voice box. -Calcitonin - Causes Storage of Calcium in
bones
Parathyroid In the neck Parathyromone -Controls the Calcium levels in
your body, and normalizes bone
growth.
Thymus In front of Thymosin -Enables the body to produce
the heart. certain antibodies.
Adrenal On top of the Adrenaline -Prepares the body for action
kidneys -Controls heart rate and
breathing in terms of emergency
Pancreas Between the -Insulin -Regulates blood sugar levels
kidneys -Glucagon
Reproductive:

-Testes (MALE) -Lower - Androgen -control maturation and male

Abdomen - Testosterone chracteristics
-Ovary -Lower - Estrogen - Influence female traits, and
(FEMALE) Abdomen - Progesterone support reproductive function.

- The endocrine system consists of glands that secrete chemicals called

hormones to control various body processes. This control system usually
brings about slow changes in the body because chemical messengers
move more slowly than nerve impulses. The major glands in the body
are the pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, thymus. adrenal, pancreas,
ovaries, and testes.
The Effects of Hormones in the Body
Several processes the body are coordinated by hormones regulate and balance the
working of organs, tissues, and cells. The influences how your heart beats, your
bones and tissues develop, even your capacity have essential role thyroid sexual
dysfunction
Both men and women produce hormones in the same areas with the reproductive
glands. Additional male hormones are produced in the testes while female
hormones are produced the ovaries.
Some hormones have short-term effects while other hormones have long-term
effects such as those that control our growth and changes onset of puberty. During
puberty, there are hormonal changes happen in your body. One moment you laugh,
then suddenly you feel like crying at this stage. It is therefore important to maintain
a positive outlook in life and remember that these changes are only temporary and
will stabilize with time.

Hormones act in very small amounts. If the organ and hormones do not produce the
regulated amount of chemicals to your body, it may result in an abnormality of your
body. This conditions is called “hormonal imbalance”. An increase or decrease in
its amount may have a significant effect in the human body.
