ENGINEERING MATERIAL SPECIFICATION

PAINT PERFORMANCE, FUNCTIONAL EXTERIOR PARTS - SEVERE DUTY ESB-M2P28-B

PAINT PERFORMANCE, FUNCTIONAL EXTERIOR PARTS - MODERATE DUTY ESB-M2P29-B
PAINT PERFORMANCE, FUNCTIONAL EXTERIOR PARTS - LIGHT DUTY ESB-M2P30-B

NOT TO BE USED FOR NEW DESIGN

1. SCOPE

These specifications define the performance of a painted finish required for partially visible or non-
visible exterior surfaces of automotive parts. Three levels of quality are defined as follows:

ESB-M2P28: for parts which are primarily visible and are subject to severe weathering, corrosion or
are required to be functional over a long period of time.

ESB-M2P29: for parts which are subject to less severe weathering, corrosion or functional
requirements.

ESB-M2P30: corrosion resistance.

2. APPLICATION

These specifications were released originally for a finish specified where adequate weather corrosion
resistance is necessary. Three quality levels provide flexibility of application and are specified
depending on use, position and exposure resistance required.

3. REQUIREMENTS

3.0 STANDARD REQUIREMENTS FOR PRODUCTION MATERIALS

Material suppliers and part producers must conform to the Company's Standard Requirements
For Production Materials (WSS-M99P1111-A).

3.1 SYSTEM COMPONENTS

. Phosphate coat ESB-M3P1 or ESB-M3P2

. One coat baking enamel or primer system

Variation in durability is obtained by quality of the primer or enamel used and variation in film
thickness.

3.2 FILM PROPERTIES

3.2.1 Initial Hardness

Shall be sufficiently cured at time of packing to withstand normal handling and

shipping without marring.

3.2.2 Adhesion No flaking or chipping

3.2.3 Film Thickness, min

(FLTM BI 117-01)

ESB-M2P28

. 0.0010 in (25 m). Primer or enamel is generally applied by spray methods for
this quality. The specified minimum film thickness applies to all areas.

. 0.0005 in (13 m) when parts zinc phosphate coated per ESB-M3P1, are
painted with electrocoat primer.

. 0.0005 in (13 m) acceptable on dip or flow coat paint processes, provided the
painted parts pass 96 h salt spray test without failure as defined in para 3.3.1.

ESB-M2P29

. 0.0004 in (10 m). Primer or enamel may be applied by either spray, dip or
flow coat methods. Minimum film thickness does not apply to areas less than
1/2 in (13 mm) from upper edges, holes, embossments, lap joints or seam
extension, when parts are dipped or flow coated.

ESB-M2P30

. 0.0003 in (8 m), excluding areas within 1/2 in (13 mm) of upper edges, holes,
embossments, lap joints or seam extensions. Primer or enamel is generally
applied by dipping or flow coat, but may be electrostatic spray painted.

3.3 SALT SPRAY RESISTANCE

(FLTM BI 103-01)

Finished parts and control panels shall withstand exposure to 5% salt spray with no failure as
follows:

Finished Parts (Refer 3.3.3) Control Panels (Refer 3.3.2)

Hours Minimum Hours Minimum

ESB-M2P28 96 168
ESB-M2P29 48 120
ESB-M2P30 24 96

3.3.1 Failure is defined as (1) blistering in any area or (2) corrosion creepage or loss of
adhesion more than 1/8 in (3 mm) from scratches, score marks or sharp edges.
Blistering, corrosion creepage or loss of adhesion in areas 1/4 in (6.4 mm) from upper
--```,,``,,`,,`,```,``,-`-`,,`,,`,`,,`---

edges, holes, embossments, lap joints or seam extensions of dipped or flow coated
parts or panels shall not be considered failure.

Engineering Specification ES-D7AB-1301-AA specifies an approved visual salt spray

tested standard on file in the affected engineering office showing the maximum
allowable corrosion for selected parts in lieu of requirements in para 3.3.1.

3.3.2 Production systems painting parts under this specification shall be tested periodically
by running control panels through the complete system including metal cleaning and
phosphate coat. Film thickness shall be representative of parts. Control panels shall
be flat, 4 x 12 in (100 x 300 mm) approximately 20 gauge unpolished, CRLC body
steel identified as Paint Testing Quality (PTQ) steel by an embossed letter "F" on the
test side of the panel. Steel for these test panels is specified by Materials Engineering
Department, BEPE and selected periodically from coil(s) representative of production
steel employed in Ford production body panels. They shall be scribed as specified in
FLTM BI 103-01 before exposure.

3.3.3 Parts tested need not be scribed. They shall be representative of production and shall
be exposed in a manner similar to panels. Because of variation in steel surface
conditions which cannot be controlled in the cleaning or painting process, minimum
salt spray requirements for parts are lower than for control panels.
