Discuss
What is an NGO?
This can be defined as a non-profit organization that operates independently of any
government, typically one whose purpose is to address a social or political issue. It
is a non-governmental organization, or NGO, is an organization established by a
group of individuals that wishes to pursue goals and aspirations that relate to the
public, social, or political good of a nation or the world. A non-governmental
organization (NGO) is a group that functions independently of any government. It
is usually non-profit. NGOs, sometimes called civil society organizations, are
established on community, national, and international levels to serve a social or
political goal such as a humanitarian cause or the protection of the environment.
For example, NGOs might focus on activities in areas involving health or health
emergencies, education, infrastructure, advocacy of minority rights, support of the
poor, and the reduction of crime.
Understanding NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations)The term NGO is
generally accepted to refer to usually non-profit, private organizations that operate
outside of government control. Some NGOs rely primarily on volunteers while
others support a paid staff. The World Bank identifies two broad groups of NGOs:
Operational NGOs: which focus on the design and implementation of
development projects
Advocacy NGOs: which defend or promote a specific cause and seek to influence
public policy
How Are NGOs Funded?
NGOs rely on a variety of sources for funding, including:
•Membership dues
•Private donations from individuals, private sector businesses, and philanthropic
organizations
•The sale of goods and services
•Grants
•Funding from foreign governments and organizations
Despite their independence from governments, some NGOs rely heavily on
government funding. Large NGOs may have budgets in millions of naira.
MANAGEMENT THEORIES/PRACTICES.
Management theories are ideas about how people manage employees in an
organization. In order to lead a business, people must understand what motivates
and directs employees in a company. Management theories explain what motivates
employees and how leaders can use these motivators to control and guide them.
Management theories provide management strategies, frameworks, and
guidelines that employers can implement in the office. Management theories are a
collection of ideas that recommend general rules for how to manage an
organization or business. They address how supervisors implement strategies to
accomplish organizational goals and how they motivate employees to perform at
their highest ability. Typically, leaders apply concepts from different management
theories that best suit their employees and company culture. Although many
management theories were created centuries ago, they still provide beneficial
frameworks for leading teams in the workplace and running businesses today.
Benefits of management theories
There are several reasons why leaders should study and apply established
management theories in the workplace, including:
Increased productivity: Using these theories, leaders learn how to make the most
of their team members, improving performances and increasing productivity.
Simplified decision making: Management theories give leaders strategies that
speed up the decision-making process, helping those leaders be more effective in
their roles.
Increased collaboration: Leaders learn how to encourage team member
participation and increase collaboration among an entire group.
Increased objectivity: Management theories encourage leaders to make
scientifically proven changes rather than relying on their judgment.
Types of morden management theory
* Quantitative approach
The quantitative approach to management uses statistics and mathematical
techniques to solve complex problems. Depending on the business area, managers
may use techniques like computer simulations or information models to assess
performance. This analysis enables them to understand what is working and what
is not within the business, then develop solutions to solve or improve the issues
they find.
Contingency approach
A contingency approach to management is based on the theory that management
effectiveness is contingent, or dependent, upon the interplay between the
application of management behaviors and specific situations. In other words, the
way you manage should change depending on the circumstances. One size does not
fit all.
System Approach
The systems approach of management states that organizations represent a
complex collection of various components that work together to reach a common
goal. An organization is made up of numerous subsystems, such as different
departments.
NGO's and MODERN MANAGEMENT METHODS
Modern management theories and practices will improve the way NGOs are being
run and also boslter their efficiency. The implementation of modern management
practices will not only help the organization achieve their goals but also aid them
In keeping up to speed with every single component of the organization. Modern
management practices. Due to the fact that all NGOs have different aims and
objectives, it is likely to assume the individuals or groups of individuals working
with the organization will have different ideologies and thought process. The
modern management theories can be put in place to ensure the togetherness of
everyone working towards maximizing the full potential of the NGO. These
practices will provide the team leader or whoever is in charge of managing and
keeping the NGO productive with skills that enables them to get the best out of the
employees. NGOs will attain maximum productivity and efficiency if modern
management practices are instilled in the management process of their
organizations. Modern management theory uses mathematical and statistical
methods to assess performance within an organization. NGO’s can use this data to
understand employee behaviours and develop solutions that maximize the potential
of their workforce.
Modern management theories Can provide NGO’s with insights into factors
they need to examine, which they can use to evaluate their organization or
department. When managers know what to look for, it can help them identify
problems and begin coming up with potential solutions. The use of mathematical
techniques also enables them to use data to support those solutions and final
decisions. The modern management theory examines employees motivation for
working beyond financial gain. Managers who utilize this theory can identify and
implement processes or procedures that take employees varying needs into
account. If employees feel satisfied at work, it can boost their morale and
engagement and make them want to continue working for the organization.
Modern management theory recognizes that today’s organizations often exist
within rapidly changing environments. This theory emphasizes the importance of
recognizing the influence of internal and external factors on business and
encourages managers to use several techniques and approaches to work with them.
