Title: Graphing Motion

MELC with code: S7FEIIIb-3

Background Information

Motion is everywhere. We can see movements every day. Such as trees sway, water flows, dogs run,
birds fly, people walk and children play. Before we go through the lesson, let us answer the pre-test.

Pre-test

A. action B. color C. distance D. motion
_____ 3. What can be used to represent the speed of runners?
A. drawing B. graph C. line D. picture
_____ 4. Which of the following refers to the length of the path when the object travels ?
A. acceleration B. displacement C. distance D. speed
_____ 5. What unit is used to measure distance?
A. hour B. liter C. meter D. second

A. hour B. kilometer C. meter D. second
_____ 7.The shortest distance between the positions of objects is known as _________?
A. displacement B. distance C. speed D. velocity
_____ 8. Which of the following refers to the speed with particular direction?
A. acceleration B. distance C. speed D. velocity
_____9. What do you call the change of speed or velocity?
A. acceleration B. distance C. speed D. velocity
_____10. What is the average speed of a jeepney if it travels 100 kilometers in two hours?
A. 30 km/h B. 40 km/h C. 50 km/h D. 60 km/h

Discussion:

Motion is defined as a change in position with respect to a reference point.

For example you are inside a moving jeepney, you see different view outside, you can say that you are
moving. If the reference point is the view outside, you are moving. But if the reference point is the
jeepney, you are not moving.

Motion can be described in different ways. We can describe by using diagrams and graphs. We can also
describe it by means of distance or displacement, speed or veloc-ity and acceleration.
In using diagram, the position of the objects are described by their coordinates along the number line.
For example, you see in the drawing that the tree is located at 5 meters, therefore, the position of the
tree is 5 meters.

Graph is use to represent different speed. Through graph we can identify the speed of each runner.

Distance refers to the length of the entire path that the object travelled.
Examples : 5 meters, 10 meters, 15 meters, 5 kilometers, 10 kilometers,

Displacement refers to the shortest distance between the positions of the ob-ject. It is the straight line
distance from the starting point to the end point.

Examples: 5 meters, 6 meters, 7 meters, 8 meters

Look at the diagram in order to distinguish which is distance and which is displacement.
Speed is the distance an object travels per unit of time. It is equals to distance
divided by time.

Meter per second (m/s) and kilometer per hour (km/h) are the units used for
measuring speed.

To calculate the speed, substitute the given data from the problem and use the
formula: s = d/t

SAMPLE PROBLEMS:
1. If a runner registered a time of 20 seconds to cover the 100 meters distance, what is his speed?
Given: d = 100 m t = 20 s s = ?
Formula: s = d/t
Solution: s = 100 m/ 20 s
Final Answer: s = 5 m/s

2. A boat travels 24 kilometers in 2 hours. What is the average speed of a boat ?

Given: d = 24km t = 2h s = ?
Formula: s = d/t
Solution : s = 24 km/ 2 h
Final Answer: s = 12 km/h

Velocity is the speed of a moving object in particular direction.

Examples : 40 km/h, North; 50 km/ h, South; 60 km/ h, West; 80 km/ h, East

Acceleration is the rate of change in velocity. We can say that an object is accelerat-ing when its speed
up changes direction or slows down.

Examples:
The bus travels with a velocity of 50 km / h, North then change into 60 km / h, North.
The jeepney travels with a velocity of 40 km / h, South then change into 40 km /h , East.
The tricycle travels with a velocity of 40 km / h, North then change into 35 km / h , North.

Did you understand the discussion about motion ?

Let us proceed to activities! Get your ballpen and answer sheet.

Activity 1:
Try to look at our surrounding, we can see different moving objects. Observe them.

Directions: Draw one moving object of your choice.

You will be rated by your teacher according to the following criteria:

Appearance of drawing - 5 points

Neatness of work - 5 points
Creativity - 5 points
Total: - 15 points
Activity 2:
Constructing a Graph
Directions: Study the table below.

Construct a line graph using the given data in Table 1.

Directions: Answer the following question based on constructed graph.

How does the line look-like? ______________________
What is the highest position of the soccer ball?_______________________
What is the lowest position of the soccer ball?________________________
What is the time interval between each position?_____________________
What is the relationship between position of soccer ball and time?____________________
