- You shouldn’t take a shower at midnight.

VI. RELATIVE CLAUSES

We use relative clauses to give additional information about something without starting
another sentence. By combining sentences with a relative clause, your text becomes more
fluent and you can avoid repeating certain words.

HOW TO FORM RELATIVE CLAUSES

A girl is talking to Tom. Do you know the girl?

(These two sentences used to express the idea seem to be COMPLICATED. Then, we should
use RELATIVE CLAUSE in order to make the expression shorter.)

→ Do you know the girl who is talking to Tom?

RELATIVE PRONOUNS

RELATIVE USE EXAMPLE

PRONOUN

who subject or object pronoun for people I told you about the
woman who lives next door.

which subject or object pronoun for animals and Do you see the cat which is
things lying on the roof?

which referring to a whole sentence He couldn’t

read which surprised me.

whose possession for people animals and things Do you know the
boy whose mother is a nurse?

whom object pronoun for people, especially in non- I was invited by the
defining relative clauses (in defining relative professor whom I met at the
clauses we colloquially prefer who) conference.

9
that subject or object pronoun for people, I don’t like the
animals and things in defining relative table that stands in the
clauses (who or which are also possible) kitchen.

DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES

Defining relative clauses (also called identifying relative clauses or restrictive relative clauses)
give detailed information defining a general term or expression. Defining relative clauses are
not put in commas.

Imagine, Tom is in a room with five girls. One girl is talking to Tom and you ask somebody
whether he knows this girl. Here the relative clause defines which of the five girls you mean.

Do you know the girl who is talking to Tom?

Defining relative clauses are often used in definitions.

A seaman is someone who works on a ship.

Object pronouns in defining relative clauses can be dropped. (Sentences with a relative
clause without the relative pronoun are called Contact Clauses.)
The boy (who/whom) we met yesterday is very nice.

NON-DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES

Non-defining relative clauses (also called non-identifying relative clauses or non-restrictive

relative clauses) give additional information on something, but do not define it. Non-defining
relative clauses are put in commas.

Imagine, Tom is in a room with only one girl. The two are talking to each other and you ask
somebody whether he knows this girl. Here the relative clause is non-defining because in this
situation it is obvious which girl you mean.

Do you know the girl, who is talking to Tom?

Note: In non-defining relative clauses, who/which may not be replaced with that.

Object pronouns in non-defining relative clauses must be used.

Jim, who/whom we met yesterday, is very nice.

THE USE OF PARTICIPLES (VERB_ing OR VERB_ed) IN RELATIVE CLAUSES

Relative clauses with who, which, that as subject pronoun can be replaced with a participle
(Verb_ing / Verb_ed). This makes the sentence shorter and easier to understand.

Examples:

I told you about the woman who lives next door.

10
→ I told you about the woman living next door.

Do you see the cat which is lying on the roof? –

→ Do you see the cat lying on the roof?

in animals. In addition, man can catch the disease from animals. In fact, a great
number of wild birds seem to carry the viruses without showing any evidences of
illnesses. Some scientists conclude that a large family of influenza viruses may
have evolved in the bird kingdom, a group that has been on the earth 100 million years
and is able to carry the viruses without contracting the disease. There is even
convincing evidence to show that virus strains are transmitted from place to place and
from continent to continent by migrating birds.
2. It is known that two influenza viruses can recombine when both are present in an
animal at the same time. The result of such recombination is a great variety of strains
containing different H and N spikes. This raises the possibility that a human influenza
virus can recombine with an influenza virus from a lower animal to produce an entirely
new spike. Research is underway to determine if that is the way that major new strains
come into being. Another possibility is that two animal influenza strains may
recombine in a pig, for example, to produce a new strain which is transmitted to man.

SUGGESTED ANSWER (part 2):

Topic 1: If you won a “Dream Vacation” contest, where would you go? Why do you want
to go there? What are you going to do during the time you stay there?

If I won a “Dream Vacation” contest, I would take my family to Hawaii, a beautiful island of the
United States of America.
There are several reasons why I would like to go there. The first reason would be that this is
one of my most favourite places that I have always dreamed about, so I believe this is a good
chance for me to make my dream come true. Secondly, Hawaii is considered a paradise on land;
I therefore really want to enjoy the atmosphere in a real paradise once in my lifetime.
Actually, I always bear in my mind that what I am going to do when I go there. I think I would
spend many days sunbathing or surfing. Furthermore, I would really like to enjoy my time in
luxurious resorts which provide the best quality of services.
