V. MODAL VERBS
We use relative clauses to give additional information about something without starting
another sentence. By combining sentences with a relative clause, your text becomes more
fluent and you can avoid repeating certain words.
(These two sentences used to express the idea seem to be COMPLICATED. Then, we should
use RELATIVE CLAUSE in order to make the expression shorter.)
RELATIVE PRONOUNS
who subject or object pronoun for people I told you about the
woman who lives next door.
which subject or object pronoun for animals and Do you see the cat which is
things lying on the roof?
whose possession for people animals and things Do you know the
boy whose mother is a nurse?
whom object pronoun for people, especially in non- I was invited by the
defining relative clauses (in defining relative professor whom I met at the
clauses we colloquially prefer who) conference.
9
that subject or object pronoun for people, I don’t like the
animals and things in defining relative table that stands in the
clauses (who or which are also possible) kitchen.
Defining relative clauses (also called identifying relative clauses or restrictive relative clauses)
give detailed information defining a general term or expression. Defining relative clauses are
not put in commas.
Imagine, Tom is in a room with five girls. One girl is talking to Tom and you ask somebody
whether he knows this girl. Here the relative clause defines which of the five girls you mean.
Object pronouns in defining relative clauses can be dropped. (Sentences with a relative
clause without the relative pronoun are called Contact Clauses.)
The boy (who/whom) we met yesterday is very nice.
Imagine, Tom is in a room with only one girl. The two are talking to each other and you ask
somebody whether he knows this girl. Here the relative clause is non-defining because in this
situation it is obvious which girl you mean.
Note: In non-defining relative clauses, who/which may not be replaced with that.
Relative clauses with who, which, that as subject pronoun can be replaced with a participle
(Verb_ing / Verb_ed). This makes the sentence shorter and easier to understand.
Examples:
1. STATEMENT
2. REQUEST/COMMAND
3. QUESTIONS
a. Yes – No question
b. WH- question

READING COMPREHENSION REVIEW
INFLUENZA
1. Scientists have established that influenza viruses taken from man can cause the disease
in animals. In addition, man can catch the disease from animals. In fact, a great
number of wild birds seem to carry the viruses without showing any evidences of
illnesses. Some scientists conclude that a large family of influenza viruses may
have evolved in the bird kingdom, a group that has been on the earth 100 million years
and is able to carry the viruses without contracting the disease. There is even
convincing evidence to show that virus strains are transmitted from place to place and
from continent to continent by migrating birds.
2. It is known that two influenza viruses can recombine when both are present in an
animal at the same time. The result of such recombination is a great variety of strains
containing different H and N spikes. This raises the possibility that a human influenza
virus can recombine with an influenza virus from a lower animal to produce an entirely
new spike. Research is underway to determine if that is the way that major new strains
come into being. Another possibility is that two animal influenza strains may
recombine in a pig, for example, to produce a new strain which is transmitted to man.
34
5. All of the following are ways of producing new strains of influenza
EXCEPT_ .
A. two influenza viruses in the same animal recombining.
B. animal viruses recombining with human viruses.
C. two animal viruses recombining.
D. two animal viruses recombining in a human.
6. The passage is the most suitable for which of the following subjects?
A. The History of Medicine.
B. Medical Science.
C. Botanical Science.
D. Life Study.
1. In the past explorers went around the world and discovered new lands. They were brave
people and they changed the history of the world. Nowadays there are only a few
places that we haven’t fully explored yet. We are still trying to find more about the north
and south poles, There is very little we do not know about the rest of the planet Earth.
2. On the other hand, we have only just begun to explore the moon and the other
planets. Space is still a mystery. Space exploration is just an adventure or a game. It
is important because it can help us solve some very mysterious problems. For
example, there have been changes in the earth’s climate in the last few years. As a
result, both people who live in cities and farmers who grow crops are worried that there
is not enough rainfall.
3. The solution may be in space. In a few years’ time, scientists will have bases on the moon,
which will help us control the weather.
4. We face another serious problem. There are now far too many people on our small planet.
If we do not find a way to control the population, we will need new planets so people
can live there.
5. We may also run out of fuel, like coal and oil. We do not get enough energy from the
wind, waves of sun. Nuclear energy is useful, but very dangerous. We must continue to
explore space and find solution to the earth’s problem before it is too late.
35
3. According to the text, which result in the following does the author NOT
AGREE on?
A. We’ll find more water
B. We won’t be able to control the population
C. The earth must be better
D. We’ll probably run out of coal and oil
THE SHOEMAKER
1. Bill Bird is a shoemaker who cannot make shoes fast enough for his growing
number of customers – and he charges more than £300 for a pair! Customers travel
hundreds of kilometers to his London shoe clinic or to his workshop in the
countryside to have their feet measured. He makes shoes for people with feet of
unusual sizes: very large, very small, very broad or very narrow. The shoes are at
least as fashionable as those found in ordinary shops.
2. Mr. Bird says, “My problem is that I cannot find skilled workers. Young people
all seem to prefer to work with computers these days. We will lose the necessary
skills soon because there are fewer and fewer shoemakers nowadays. I am 45, and
now I want to teach young people everything I know about making shoes. It’s a good
job, and a lot of people want to buy beautiful shoes specially made for them.”
3. He started in the business 19 years ago and now he employs three other people.
His customers pay about £ 500 for their first pair of shoes. He says, “Extra
pairs of shoes cost between £320 and £450, as it takes one employee a whole
week to make just one shoe.”
36
2. How old is Bill Bird?
A. over forty-five
B. forty-five
C. about forty-five
D. thirty –five

SUGGESTED ANSWER (part 2):
Topic 1: If you won a “Dream Vacation” contest, where would you go? Why do you want
to go there? What are you going to do during the time you stay there?
If I won a “Dream Vacation” contest, I would take my family to Hawaii, a beautiful island of the
United States of America.
There are several reasons why I would like to go there. The first reason would be that this is
one of my most favourite places that I have always dreamed about, so I believe this is a good
chance for me to make my dream come true. Secondly, Hawaii is considered a paradise on land;
I therefore really want to enjoy the atmosphere in a real paradise once in my lifetime.
Actually, I always bear in my mind that what I am going to do when I go there. I think I would
spend many days sunbathing or surfing. Furthermore, I would really like to enjoy my time in
luxurious resorts which provide the best quality of services.
I have to say that paying a visit to Hawaii is always on top of my priorities when choosing a
travel destination.
