 INTRODUCTION
A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle. – James Keller.
Over the last one to two decades, I have constantly observed a worrisome pattern in the
lives of the men and women that I have been privileged to come across. Perhaps this
pattern may be applicable to you or to someone you know.
You are endowed with an above average intelligence and had the opportunity of getting a
good education. You probably have some reasonable exposure and are blessed with good
health. However, despite this enormous potential, you are sometimes stagnated and find
yourself oscillating around the same spot. You may have been stuck around the same
position for years in a stretch. If you look back into the past three to five years, you probably
cannot point to any significant progress. You sometimes feel as if there is a mental ceiling
above you and a wall of confinement has been built around you. There is a sense of not
even knowing what to do.
Your real enemy is not that neighbour or colleague, but your own mind. You cannot rise
higher in life than what your mind permits. All your real limitations and barriers exist only in
your own mind, imposed on you by birth and the environment of your upbringing. The
external barriers you are seeing are there because the internal ones are there. You are
simply a victim of your own thoughts and imaginations. Achieving true and enduring success
is first an inside job. Once you get rid of the internal barriers, the external ones will fade out.
You can change your life by changing your mind. What you really need is, first of all, a
mental transformation – a raising of the bar.
Your present mental configuration - the operating system, storage capacity, processing
speed, installed apps and files - is a product of what you inherited as well as all your past
experiences. The chances are that you are currently somehow configured for mediocrity,
under-performance, and low achievement. If you have to make progress and go further in
your life’s journey, you will have to re-configure your mind by deleting the files of
mediocrity and stagnation; and then downloading the files of success, achievement and
progress. That means one has to raise the bar and enlarge his mental horizon.
That is exactly what this book, using ageless Biblical principles, helps the reader to do. It is a
careful blend of both psychological as well as spiritual approaches.

 CHAPTER 1
DESTINY AND PURPOSE
What is Destiny?
Many people want to know their destiny, and this has already created a huge industry. A lot
of smart persons have made big fortunes from those trying to find out their destiny. These
people are called fortune-tellers, but they are the ones making the real fortune out of the
ignorance of their clients. They should have been rightly called fortune-makers. There is a
big difference between your present destiny and your original destiny (at birth). The latter is
more appropriately called purpose. Of course, many people have deviated from their
original destiny / purpose over time and are now on a completely different destiny that the
environment imposed on them. Now, by observing a person’s behaviours over a period of
time, one can tell him his destiny without collecting a cent from him. Better still, the person
can find out by himself. So, let’s quickly see how to find it out.
The direction that a person is following in life (one’s behaviours) will determine the eventual
destination that he will arrive at – his destiny. For example, if you are in Abuja and you are
driving northwards, you are likely to eventually arrive in Kano or Katsina, not Port-Harcourt
or Lagos.
Everyone can know his destiny by checking the direction of his life. The direction can be
uncovered by examining the choices that the person is constantly making – the things that
he has been consistently saying and doing. In turn, the things that you have been saying and
doing flow from the things that you have been hearing and seeing. To be frank with you, you
have a really bad destiny if you have been speaking and doing evil things. A simple definition
of ‘evil’ is what you don’t want another person to say or do to you. The good news is that, if
you want a good destiny, you can change your direction now. To have a good destiny, you
must be moving in the right direction by saying and doing good things. To do this, you have
to be hearing and seeing good things. You cannot go far unless you first see far. You cannot
do great things unless you first see great things. Being comes before doing.
To summarize, what you keep hearing and seeing will set the direction for your life; when
you continue to move in that direction by the things you say and do, you will eventually
arrive at your destiny or destination. The process flow is something like below.

The truth is that you can (and should) actually flip the process backwards, by first deciding
what you want your destiny to be. Then, you determine the things you should be saying and
doing in order to get there. Then, you determine the things you should be listening to,
reading and watching. In day-to-day living, is there anyone who goes out in the morning and
just keeps driving around town without first having a destination in mind? So, the next
question after “What is my destiny?” should be “What destiny do I desire?” This is because,
if you have an undesirable destiny, you can actually re-create a new one. You can decide to
change your direction so that your destination will change.

Purpose
Now, let’s get back to the issue of one’s original destiny. To answer the question “What
destiny do I desire?”, one should actually begin by finding out why one was born in the first
place. The answer to that question should be properly aligned with your purpose or original
destiny - before your direction was altered by the environment. Everyone on planet earth
was created by the Almighty God for a purpose and each must find it out. No one
determines his purpose; we can only discover it. When you discover your purpose and re-
align your behaviours accordingly, your present destiny will begin to change towards that
purpose. As you continue in the path of your purpose, you increasingly find success and
fulfilment. Success, therefore, consists not necessarily in having a lot of material possessions
or occupying lofty positions of power, but in achieving one’s purpose on earth - in reaching
one’s original, God-ordained destination. This is also called fulfilment and it comes
progressively or incrementally.

Values and Expectations

There is something radically different about a man that has discovered his purpose. His
values and corresponding pursuits will change immediately. Values are the things that a
person considers to be important in life – his treasures. Our values determine our pursuits –
the things we chase after with the resources at our disposal (time, energy, money,
relationships etc). Our values also determine the things that we can let go or give up, in
order to stay focused on the big picture. A man with the wrong values cannot go far because
he will constantly be unwilling to pay the price for the attainment of his God-ordained
purpose. Once a man has discovered his purpose on earth, the picture of that purpose
should be permanently glued to his mind. He must always visualize it until it becomes
something he constantly looks forward to seeing happen one day. This is called hope or
expectation. A hopeless man is one of the poorest men on earth. Initially, that hope may
appear like mere fantasy and an impossible feat. But if you keep the picture alive and keep
speaking it to yourself, it will eventually guide you into the paths of its own fulfilment.

 CHAPTER 2
THE NUMBER ONE FACTOR: CHOOSE YOUR SHEPHERD
The is the first and most important step in your journey to greatness and personal
fulfilment. The number one secret of being great or achieving greatness is having a great
shepherd. This is just in the same way that a great coach is critical to the making of a great
sports team. Basically speaking, a shepherd gives guidance or direction. The information and
suggestions / instructions that are available to a person are what will shepherd him. Words
and pictures are all shepherds in their own rights. You will be guided by whatever you
continue to listen to or watch. Whenever you choose to listen to certain words or see
certain pictures, you are giving them access into your heart and mind, to shepherd you. If
you sit down in front of the television and consistently watch a particular film, you have
given the permission for that film to shepherd you. The internet site that you visit regularly
will become your shepherd. The music that you listen to regularly will shepherd you. The
books that you read consistently will shepherd you. Your brain is like the Central Processing
Unit (CPU) of a computer system – whatever you store in it is what it can process for you. It
is whatever goes into your mind and heart that the heart and mind can process to give you
ideas and direction. That makes your eyes and ears to be some of your greatest assets. It is
now your responsibility to choose what goes into them. If you want to make progress, stop
feeding limiting words and pictures into your heart and mind. No one can be greater than
what he hears. No one can go further than what he sees in his mind.
Words come in sizes and magnitudes, and they do not have the same value. There are great
words and there are little ones, just as you have trees in different sizes. Some trees are very
big and tall while others are not as impressive. Ideas proceed out of words. So, the ideas
that you can ever have will depend on the words that you have. Your first step in making
progress is to settle for the right shepherd by making sure that your heart and mind are
filled with the right words and their corresponding suggestions/ ideas. If you keep hearing
great words, you will get great ideas from them. Conversely, if you keep hearing shallow
words, you can only have shallow ideas. The greater the word that is stored in you, the
greater will be the ideas that come to you and the greater you can become, if you
implement those ideas. This is called the WWW process - The Word, the Will and the Work.
But the beginning of everything is the word. So, which word is your own shepherd?
A Man Called David
One man that I admire very much is a Jewish king that reigned around 1010 - 970 BCE, called
David. He was a man that cannot be referred to as average by any standard. As a young boy,
he fought and killed a giant that an entire army of his country could not confront. He
became the king of his country at age thirty. This is definitely one man that deserves to be
listened to when he speaks on success secrets. In one of His writings, he revealed his success
secret when he made the categorical statement: “The Lord is my Shepherd” (Psalms 23:1).
Explaining this further, he said “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path”
(Psalms 119:105). Put differently, King David chose to be guided by the body of information
and instructions contained in the word of God. It was a deliberate choice. I guess he must
have made this choice after encountering some other words and philosophies that were
around in his time.

Over thirty years ago, I also made the same choice as King David. I decided to make the Lord
my Shepherd. I decided to make the word of God – the Holy Bible – my guide. It was a
deliberate choice after observing that my life was going haywire, like a sheep without a
shepherd. It is a choice that I am glad that I made, which I will make over and over again if
the opportunity ever arises. It is strongly recommended that you ensure the Lord is indeed
your Shepherd as you prepare to go further in your career or business.

How to Make the Lord your Shepherd

King David gave us a hint on how he was able to successfully make the Lord his Shepherd. In
Psalms 119:11, he says: “Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against
you”. For the Lord to effectively shepherd us, His word has to be hidden in our hearts. It has
to be securely stored in our thoughts and through our speech. When we think or meditate
on the word of God (or any other word for that matter), it is like storing the information in
the cloud. But when we speak it out, it can be likened to downloading it into our hard disk.
For the Lord to be one’s Shepherd, His word needs to be hidden both in the cloud as well as
in the hard disk of our hearts. That means we should read the word out aloud every time we
are studying it. As we do this, it takes root inside us and produces branches in the form of
inspiration. This requires a high level of diligence to accomplish.
One unmistakable ingredient that we can use to know if the inspiration we are getting is
truly from the Lord is love. God, the good Shepherd, is love. Whenever you have thoughts of
hatred or bitterness towards another person, it’s an indication that you are already being
misguided by a bad shepherd.

Benefits of Making the Lord Your Shepherd

1. If the Lord is not your Shepherd, something less or smaller will be. Since the Lord is
the greatest of all the shepherds that are out there, your greatness in life begins with
a partnership with Him.
2. You can never be wrong.
3. He will be with you throughout the journey.

 CHAPTER 3
BELIEFS AND RED LINES
Beliefs
Our beliefs are probably the greatest remote controllers of our lives. A person’s beliefs will
set the boundaries for his mental horizon. Your belief is any information that you are
convinced about, whether you have seen it or not. The nature of life is such that you will
never be able to see everything before you believe it. So, the statement ‘seeing is believing’
is not practicable in reality. You will have to trust the information that comes from others
without seeing it. We all live by trust. For example, when boarding a plane, you will never be
able to ascertain that the pilot is not drunk or that he has been properly trained. You just
believed it and entered. If you receive any information to the contrary – and also believe
that - you probably would quickly run out of that aircraft.
When we go to eat in a restaurant, we never get a chance to see if the food was hygienically
cooked or not. We just sit down and eat based on trust. Some desperate people mix various
magical concoctions (some of which may be poisonous) in the food they sell, because
someone told them that it will attract more customers. If you knew that, you probably
would never eat in that restaurant or buy food from that particular vendor again.
Now, what you believe may or may not be true but as long as you believe it, it becomes the
basis for the decisions you make in life, thus setting the boundaries for your mental horizon.
Since what you believe forms the basis for your decisions, then your beliefs can either be
helping you or limiting you. To shatter your mental limits then, you have to begin by
critically examining your beliefs. For example, if you have believed a lie, you will continue to
take decisions based on that lie until you know the truth. In other words, that lie will
effectively enslave or constrain you and define your mental horizon until you discover the
truth and are set free. For anyone to go further in any area of life, he has to first enlarge his
mental horizon in that area by knowing and believing the true information concerning the
area. It is the personal responsibility of anyone to ensure that whatever information he is
getting and acting upon is true. And that means one has to regularly check to discover the
lies that he has previously believed and uproot them.

Two Kinds of Information

It has been established earlier that our lives are controlled remotely by the information we
have access to and believe. No one can go further or rise higher in life than the quality of
information available to him. If the information that you have is false, you will be misled and
might travel far in the wrong direction before, if at all, being properly guided.
Information exists generally on two levels – visible and invisible. To make progress in life,
one must have access to both. Visible information, when processed, will lead to natural
intelligence. On the other hand, when invisible information is processed, it will produce
divine intelligence. Visible information is, as it implies, what one’s naked eyes can see. For
example, if I enter into a room, I can see the walls, the ceiling, the furniture and fittings, the
people etc. But I can’t see the GSM signals, radiations, electric current or poisonous gases

that may be in that room. However, the fact that I can’t see those things does not mean that
they are not there. The fact that I can’t see them also does not make them irrelevant or
inconsequential. It does not diminish their impact. As a matter of fact, the things that we do
not see are sometimes more relevant and consequential than the visible ones. Many people
carelessly base their decisions only on what naked eyes can see, thus making the basis of
such decisions to be grossly inadequate. Sometimes, the result of such carelessness has
been fatal. For example, let’s assume that a person is told that there is electricity in a cable
before him. He cannot see it with his naked eyes, so he has to either believe the information
or reject it, perhaps depending on his perceived credibility of the source. if he does not
believe and steps on the electrified cable, the fact that the electricity is not visible to him or
that he didn’t believe the information does not mean that he will not be electrocuted. By
the time he will know the fact by himself, it will be too late for him to tell another person.
When a person is taking decisions based only on visible information, he will be at a huge
disadvantage compared to the one that has access to both the visible and invisible
information. The invisible information is also referred to as spiritual information and can be
accessed by knowing and believing spiritual truth. And since there is spiritual truth, it means
that there are also what can be referred to as spiritual lies.
A large proportion of these lies or false beliefs have already been packaged into adages,
proverbs and general statements in various cultures and passed down the line through oral
or written traditions for many generations. Many of them have come to be automatically
accepted by the populace with scarcely anyone daring to challenge their veracity. These
have grown to become the various myths that can be found in all the cultures and languages
of the world. If one has believed and is acting on lies, it is never too late to discover the
truth and begin to act on it. This is how one can begin to make progress in the right
direction.

Lies, Lies, Lies!!!

Let’s take a quick glance at a few of the lies that you probably have believed, which may
presently be limiting your mental horizon.
1. I own something in this world
This is one of the biggest lies of all time, which is partly responsible for what is usually
referred to as the Rat race. I call it the economic lie / deception. This lie is at the root of
most of the wickedness in our world. On the contrary, the fact is that whatever you had in
your hands at birth is what you really own – nothing! You brought nothing into the world,
not even the food to eat or clothe to wear for your first day here. How then can you claim
that anything in this world is yours? So, when people say “My house”, “My car”, “My this,
my that”, you know that they are victims of lies. No one really owns anything on this
terrestrial ball. Everybody comes empty-handed, gets some things to use while here and
then departs empty-handed.

 2. Somebody is my enemy
This is another giant deception, just like the first one above. I call it the political lie /
deception. A person’s real enemy is inside him – his thoughts, imaginations and emotions.
Some people may not like him and may even try to harm him, but this doesn’t mean that
they are his real enemies. Most of the people you will come across are simply trying to fend
for their own interests, partly because they have been deceived by the first lie. Then they try
to fight or even kill whoever (and it’s not personal!) they perceive to be an obstacle or
threat to those interests. Their own real enemy (lust, greed, pride etc) that is inside them
makes them to behave aggressively, leaving them as mere victims that should be pitied. If
that same enemy in them is within you too, then you will also react that way. This is how
war starts between individuals, families, communities and even nations. Meanwhile, the
real enemy of everybody is the devil, manifesting in evil thoughts, imaginations and
emotions within each of us. We can overcome this enemy through prayer instead of fighting
the people around us.
3. I am rich because I have a lot of money
When we consider riches only from a worldly viewpoint of material acquisition, it warps our
value system and distorts our mental horizon. The effect is that we tend, whenever the
opportunity arises, to trade lasting or eternal riches (e.g. love, joy and peace) for material
ones. But when we compare the lifetime values of both categories of wealth, then our
physical wealth, which we can only enjoy while in this world, pales into insignificance. The
truth is that eternal riches are the only enduring wealth that a person can rely on, because
they transcend this world.
4. I am inferior or superior to somebody
No human being is inferior or superior to another. We are all equal clays in the sight of the
Potter and can only become whatever He makes us to be. That doesn’t mean that we are all
on the same level in life, but it does mean that we are all important at those different levels
that we occupy. Of course, we should respect those who are older than us, ahead of us or in
higher positions than us. We should also extend helping hands to those who are younger,
coming behind or in lower positions than us.
5. I am important because I hold a particular position
Like our money, it is also very easy for our titles and positions to block our mental horizon, if
not put in proper perspective. What will eventually count at the end of the day is not the
positions we occupied in our lifetime but the impact we were able to make on others. It is
possible to make huge positive impact on others without holding any position. It is also
possible to make very little or negative impact on others with the positions and offices we
occupy.

Know and Believe the Truth
To make progress in life, it is not sufficient to discover and get rid of lies; you must also
know and believe the truth. If something is true, whether it is believed or not does not
change anything on ground. The only change it will make is in the lives of those who are
privileged to know and believe it. Some of the greatest spiritual truths ever revealed to man
are contained in the gospel of Jesus Christ - the Truth personified. It is in the interest of
everyone on earth to find out and believe these truths that are contained in the New
Testament of the Holy Bible. They will help such a person to see into the invisible, thus
helping to balance the body of information available for decision making.
However, it’s not going to be as effective as it should be, if one simply believes the words of
Jesus without first accepting and acknowledging Him as one’s personal Lord and Saviour.
Just in case you have never done this before, you can do it now in these simple steps:
1. Confess that you have sinned and fallen short of the grace of God
2. Repent and ask for forgiveness through the blood of Jesus that was shed on the cross
3. Ask Jesus to come into your heart as your personal Lord and Saviour
Find below a few ageless spiritual truths from the teachings of Jesus that one must know
and believe, in order for the person to make real progress in life. Please read more from the
gospel of Jesus in the New Testament of the Holy Bible.
1. Spiritual blessings are more important than material ones
2. A man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions
3. Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word of God
4. God knows the needs of men before they ask Him
5. Where a man’s treasure is, that is where his heart will be
6. No one can serve both God and money
7. Everyone that asks receives, everyone that seeks finds and to everyone that
knocks, it is opened
8. It is not what goes into a man that defiles him but what comes out of a man
9. Life is more important than food and the body is more important than clothes
10. Heaven and earth will pass away but the word of God will not pass away
11. On the day of judgement, man will give an account for every careless word that
he has spoken
12. A man can receive nothing unless it is given to him from above

The Proof of Belief

So, what is the evidence or proof of my beliefs? For example, if I am planning to enter a
plane and I am told by someone working in the airline that there is a bomb planted in that
plane, how shall it be known that I believe that information?
1. Speaking
I will definitely pass that information to anyone that wants to enter that plane, if I care
about them. I am even likely to share the information with my family and friends, who may

not be planning to travel on the plane in question. Some people will do more by sharing it
on their social media platforms to cover people that are not even intending to travel by air.
Whichever way you look at it, the fact is that we usually say whatever we believe. So, what
are you saying? Try and take an inventory of everything you say throughout the day.
Endeavour to do this every day for a week or a month. Whatever words or statements that
you find recurring are your fundamental beliefs. These are the words and statements that
are directing your life and defining your mental horizon. From these findings, you can then
know the actual direction that your life is drifting towards. Good words will move you in a
positive direction while bad words will drift you in a negative one.
2. Corresponding Action
We also act on the basis of any information that we believe. If I really believed the
information about the bomb in the plane, I will refuse to enter into it or come out if I had
already entered. This is how my source of that information will know that I really believed
what he told me. In the same way, if a person truly believes the words of Jesus in the gospel
or any other words in the Holy Bible, the way to know is that they will act on those words. It
will reflect in their day-to-day behaviours.
Red Lines
As you make progress in your life, business career or ministry, you need to have clear red
lines. Red lines are necessary so that we don’t progress in the wrong direction. They serve as
checks and indicators, guarding us from error. There are fake red lines and there are true or
genuine ones. You need to know the difference between these.
Some of the best red lines that I have personally come across are contained in the laws of
Moses in the Old Testament of the Holy Bible. These are ancient boundaries that billions of
people through the ages have found helpful in their life journeys. Below are what I refer to
as the top eight “shall nots”, and you need to make up your mind that no matter the
pressure to do otherwise, these are clearly no-go areas. Whenever you break these
commands, you are actually breaking your own life, and creating obstacles to your own
progress.
1. You shall not have any other gods beside Me (Jehovah).
2. You shall not bow down to any image
3. You shall not misuse the Name of God
4. You shall not kill
5. You shall not commit adultery
6. You shall not steal
7. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour
8. You shall not covet what belongs to your neighbour
Fake red lines are the taboos and restrictions that men have put in place so as to put others
at a disadvantage. They are those things you are told not to do, which if you do, will
empower you and set you free from oppression. Every oppressor wants to keep his captives
perpetually in bondage and they set up fake boundaries for this purpose.

Self-belief and Self-Image
Self-image is the personal view or mental picture that a person has of himself or herself.
This springs from what we really believe about our abilities, resources and future prospects.
It’s the person that you see when you look into the mirror. There may be obstacles around
you that are trying to limit you but none can ever compare with the obstacle within – a low
self-image.

Here are four important principles to help you develop a winning self-image:
1. Man is a slave to his self-beliefs
What a person believes about himself dictates his behaviour and directs his life. Self-beliefs
are the sum of subconscious opinions or tenets a person has, which add up to his/her
overall self-image. Whether you think that you are a success or that you are a failure, you
are right. We tend to do everything within our powers to defend and conform to our beliefs
about ourselves.
2. Success is relative
Success is simply attaining a set goal. What amounts to success for one person may not be
applicable to another. Lionel Messi may not be a good Tennis player but that doesn’t mean
that he is a failure. Everybody’s gifts and handicaps are different. You need to find out your
own strengths, define what is success for you, set your own goals, lay out your own tracks
and run your race.
3. Self-image can be improved
You don’t have to perpetually remain a victim of low self-image. You can change the course
of your life by changing your self-beliefs. We tend to believe whatever we keep hearing. So,
you can change your negative self-beliefs by changing what you keep hearing about
yourself. You can change what you keep hearing by changing your negative environment
and surrounding yourself with positive people. Most important of all, you can find out what
your Creator says about you and simply believe it.

A positive, balanced self-image should not be confused with superiority complex. It’s got
nothing to do with looking down on others. Everybody is different but everybody is also
important. It’s about knowing your own unique place in the community and appreciating
your strengths and weaknesses while also respecting those of others.

THOUGHTS AND IMAGINATIONS
When we refer to heart, we are talking about your faculty of thinking. The heart is inhabited
by thoughts. When we talk about the mind, we are referring to the faculty of visualization or
imagination. The mind is inhabited by pictures or images. Now, every thought has its
corresponding meaning, image or picture. Imagination is the image or picture that comes
into your mind from a particular thought that has entered your heart.
Thoughts and imaginations are like birds flying in the sky, looking for branches to perch on.
There are good / positive birds and there are bad / negative ones. Where your power lies is
in deciding which birds to permit or allow to settle down on your branch. But once they
settle down, you are no longer in charge – they begin to control you. Wrong thoughts in a
person’s heart will lead to wrong images in the mind, which can keep him in bondage and
clog the wheels of his progress. On the other hand, right thoughts will produce the right
images in the mind, which can lead to freedom and exploits. Many of us significantly
underestimate the power of our thoughts. But the truth is that until you change your
thinking, you can’t change your life. Everything you are seeing around you now was
produced by your thoughts at one point in time. To be successful, you must first have the
thoughts and imaginations of success. Remember that success is the fulfilment of purpose –
real progress towards a glorious destiny – and not necessarily the accumulation of a lot of
money. Nobody can do anything unless he first sees (imagines) it; and you can’t imagine
something unless you first think it. You may not be able to prevent negative thoughts and
imaginations from flying over your sky, but you can prevent them from settling down in your
heart and mind. You can shoot them down. We can overcome negative thoughts and their
corresponding images by consistently speaking out positive words from the word of God.

Defend Your Heart

To make sustained progress in business, career or ministry, your heart (the faculty of
thinking) must be well-defended. You need to constantly take an inventory of the thoughts
that occupy your heart at any point in time and resist negative thoughts immediately they
are detected. Enjoy this story of two boats.

Case 1:
In 1993, Hugo Vihlen was able to cross the Atlantic Ocean (from the US to England) on a
boat called Father’s Day - a tiny boat measuring 5 feet, 4 inches long – over a period of 115
days.
Case 2:
On April 13, 2022, at least 29 people died when a boat capsized in Nigeria’s Sokoto State, in
the Northwest of the country. The boat was carrying 35 people, mostly women, across a
dam in Shagari Local Government Area when it sank. Divers managed to rescue 6 people,
the governor said. Burials have been conducted for the dead.
Moral of the Story:
The real problem is not the volume of negative comments and attitudes around you but the
fact that YOU (Yes, YOU!) allow them to enter your heart. If your heart is porous, even a
little stream of negative waters in one day can sink you. If your heart is well-defended, you
can successfully ride on an ocean of negative waters for several months until you reach your
destination.

WHAT-COUNT FACTORS AND WINNING ATTRIBUTES
These are important personal attributes that anyone who desires to go further in life must
develop. The list here is not exhaustive but focuses on those ones that can be considered as
the must-haves. The good news is that they can all be learnt. It is also important to note that
the development of these traits is not elaboratively discussed here but sufficient guidelines
have been provided to stimulate any keen person to learn more from widely available
resources on the subjects.
Enhance Your Mental Powers
There is something fascinating about a person who has been able to develop his mental
powers to be able to operate like a smooth-running machinery. Such a person is able to
dispatch his work precisely on schedule, turn promptly from one problem to the next, and
concentrate completely on each. The process of analysing data is swift, decisions are
reached unhesitatingly, and definite appropriate action is taken.
Mental efficiency comprises a considerable number of individual abilities that separately
require developing and strengthening. It begins with taking charge of one’s mind, to stop it
from drifting with the currents. For example, you cannot just be reading and commenting on
every post on WhatsApp or watching every soap opera that is shown on television. One
needs to become conscious of one’s abilities and handicaps and plot a course for oneself on
the chart of self-knowledge. This kind of personal awareness is necessary before progress
can be achieved.
Intellectual abilities can be developed. Let’s look at a few abilities that have been proven to
be very important for mental efficiency. These have been categorized into three, and any
comprehensive program on mental discipline should include goals across these three
categories.
1. Abilities that Result in Concentration
These are the abilities which enable one to give sustained mental attention, promptly and
fully, to the tasks of the day. One needs to be able to concentrate or focus on issues
intensely for short periods. This requires giving focal attention throughout the day to a
succession of problems which are often unrelated. It is the ability to resist the distractions of
extraneous stimuli. These stimuli are both internal and external – ideas and thoughts as well
as objects and people. However, the problem is really one of degree; psychologists have
asserted that distracting stimuli are never completely shut out of the mind, even during
intense concentration. Through regular practice, a person can cultivate the ability to
concentrate. One can learn to gradually lengthen his span of attention or to drop one
problem completely and move promptly and energetically to the next.
2. Abilities that Result in Clear Thinking
These are the abilities that enable one to learn things with precision, to process information,
to analyse data and make prompt and correct decisions. It is the latter that is usually
referred to as thinking. Clear and precise meanings, ideas and concepts are basic to all

thinking that leads to correct decisions. The absence of this clarity is often the cause of hazy
thinking. Most arguments fizzle into thin air when the participants get to define their terms,
because that is when they discover that they haven’t been talking about the same things all
along. The first step to avoid hazy thinking is to make conscious efforts to clarify the
meanings of words. Next, you need to guard against stereotypes. These are ready-made
evaluations and judgements which have been widely accepted over time. They are
commonly expressed in slogans and catch-phrases. For example, “The customer is always
right” is one stereotype that has led to several faulty decisions like acceptance of
merchandise returned by a buyer, for no genuine reason, after already using it. We need to
form the habit of critically examining every stereotype and assumptions and ask if they are
true in the specific context at hand.
3. Abilities that Result in Memorization
These abilities help one to store information safely in the mind for ready and accurate recall.
A retentive, reliable memory is a great asset to anyone, while a floppy, untrained one can be
a major handicap. In the real sense of it, we all have memories, rather than a memory. This
makes certain sets of experiences to be more easily recalled than others. One of the major
factors that aid memorization is association. There are memory training techniques that can
aid someone to help his brain through ingenious ways of associating information, data and
experiences. The strength of association depends on several factors like frequency, intensity
of impression, emotional impact and immediacy. It is possible to juggle information and
experiences in such a way that secures favourable conditions for strong associations.
Developing a sound memory may be challenging but it is an essential step in developing an
efficient mind.

Decision Making
To constantly move to the next level in career, business and ministry, you must master the
art of sound decision making. The average adult makes more than 35,000 decisions in a day-
most of them by reflex actions rather than by proper choice. These include whether to get
up when the alarm rings, to ignore it, to snooze it, to put it off, to bath with hot water or
ordinary one, to use gas or electric stove, to eat breakfast or not, what to eat, to pick the
phone when it rings or ignore it, where to go, when to go, how to get there, what to wear,
to transfer that money or not, what to read or watch, when to sleep etc. While the vast
majority of these decisions may appear trivial, the truth is that every decision we make has
an impact on our future. Our present is the sum of all the decisions we have made in the
past. Renowned author, John C. Maxwell, puts it this way: “Life is a matter of choices, and
every choice you make makes you”.

Here are five time-tested principles to guide us towards better decisions:
1. Process is more important than content
Decision making is more of a process than an incident or event. This process can be
developed and applied, irrespective of what the actual decision is about. While we have all
been programmed by past experiences to make certain decisions by reflex or through
autopilot, this sometimes lands us where we do not desire. In proper decision making, you
must begin with the end in mind.
2. Pay attention to habits
The choices that we repeatedly make are those that shape us, not the things that we do
once-in-a-while. If you make the same decision twice, there is an increased chance that you
will make it again and again. Often, our first-time decisions were taken to solve a particular
problem. But we can find ourselves repeating the same decision over and over, even when
the problem no longer exists.
3. Remember the Butterfly effect
The butterfly effect, in chaos theory, simply proposes that the flapping of the wings of a
butterfly in one location can cause a hurricane in a faraway place. It helps to us
conceptualize the huge effects that apparently simple decisions can have on us and on
others over a given period. So, before making that decision, first think of the effects it might
have on your health, career, finances, family and community.
4. Beware of the Turtle’s disease
Whenever a turtle is threatened, he quickly pulls his head inside his protective shell. But,
with his head tucked in, he can’t move. So, he remains immobilized because he is afraid of
sticking his neck out. Many people avoid making right decisions because of criticisms or the
hostilities of others. While no one is asking you to stick your neck out when a cutlass is
dangling, the truth is that there is no real dangling cutlass in many of the situations that
scare us.
5. The profit is in the doing
A very good decision that is not fully implemented may be worse than not making a decision
at all. This is because of the resources (time, energy etc.) that have already been committed
to the decision-making effort, for which no value is gotten. The implementation and
evaluation stages are critical aspects of the decision-making process.

Problem solving is a life skill. It is one of the transversal skills identified by UNESCO-UNEVOC.
It is also recognised as one of the important future skills for the next generation.
Irrespective of your profession or vocation, you will succeed in large part to the extent of
your ability to solve problems. You can solve problems by simply searching for and re-
applying the solutions that others have previously implemented. You can also solve
problems by re-thinking those problems and coming up with creative solutions that never
existed before. The ability to solve problems creatively is an important aspect of mental
transformation for individual excellence and personal fulfilment. It will not only stand you
out in the workplace and business world, it will also help you to enhance your lifetime
achievement. When it comes to creativity, process is far more important than content. The
secret of your success in creative problem solving is in sticking to the process. If you master
the process of personal creative problem solving, it will be easy to apply the same principles
to departmental, corporate or community settings.
Here are 8 quick and easy steps to solve every major life problem in a creative manner.
1. Problem Acceptance
The first step is for you to be truly convinced that there is a gap between your present state
and your desired state / objective. A "problem" is simply a perception of gap between the
current situation and the one desired. If there is no fervent dissatisfaction with your current
situation, then there is no problem to be solved and life might just as well continue as it is.
Let's assume that you are driving a car and it suddenly comes to a halt. If where it stops is
actually your destination, then there is no problem to be solved. But supposing that the car
stops in the middle of the road on your way to a job interview, then there is a problem.
Better still, you may also accept problems that have not happened yet by anticipating them.
2. Model Building
Once you have accepted within yourself that there is a problem, you now need to
understand the cause and effect structure of that problem. Nothing just happens in life. The
results that you are presently seeing are the outcomes of certain actions that have preceded
them. You need to identify the causal elements that produced the outcome that you are
seeing, as well as their relationships. In the case of the car, motion is produced when
electricity is supplied by the battery, fuel is injected into the engine, water circulates to cool
the engine, wheels are able to rotate etc. All these are the causal elements while motion is
the effect or desired outcome.
3. Fact Gathering
The next thing is to gather the facts surrounding the problem as well as the identified causal
elements - in terms of quantity and quality. Be careful to guard against biases and not to
jump to conclusions too early. You need to consider several viewpoints, be as
comprehensive as possible and beware of assumptions. You need to consider that problem
within a broad context and also get information on the background as well as the

at this stage are compass, obstacle map and level chain.
4. Problem Clarification and Definition
Now, it's time to process all the information gathered. You need to compare your facts and
figures on each causal element with what that element is supposed to be. As you do this,
you will be able to pinpoint the element/s that are responsible for the problematic outcome
being faced. This step involves re-phrasing the problem by developing a clear question or a
set of questions that begin with the words "How to...." so as to indicate the direction you
wish to follow. There are several techniques to do this, including the why and what's
stopping analysis, destination and aerial survey.
5. Idea Generation, Evaluation and Selection
This is where your creativity begins to properly take shape. You start by generating different
options for solving the problem that you have defined. You may begin this by considering
how that problem has been solved in the past but you shouldn't limit yourself to those
options because there is always a better way. One of the greatest obstacles to your
creativity is what you already know. You must be ready to challenge culture and traditions.
Be careful not to judge any idea until all ideas are on the table. In their book, Imagination
Engineering, Paul Birch and Brian Clegg listed a very rich arsenal of really creative idea
generation techniques. These include challenging an assumption, distortion, reversal,
fantasy, by-pass and new destination. Also, in his book, The Power of Innovation, Min
Basadur shares some excellent idea generation techniques. These include blitzing and
forcing connections. After all ideas are listed, you need to define clear criteria for evaluating
them. You then consider all the ideas against the criteria and rank them in order of
preference. There are several techniques for doing this, like the criteria grid and paired
comparison analysis. Then, you select the best idea.
6. Action Planning and Obstacle Mapping
It's time to draw a road map. You have to identify the key people that will help you to make
it happen. You need to outline some kind of strategy pyramid - what actions will be taken,
by whom, when and in what sequence. You need to know which actions are dependent on
others and which can run concurrently. You need to prepare a budget for the costs that will
be involved. It's important to identify the potential obstacles that might be encountered and
think through ways around them. It's also important to identify possible new problems that
this solution might create and know how to respond to them. Some techniques that can
help you at this stage include the slip road, the washroom, hazard markers and signposts.
7. On Boarding
Most problems in life will require the cooperation of others to solve. Scarcely does anyone
succeed all alone in life. There are skills, contacts, positional authority, information and
material resources that certain people have which are critical to the success of your plan.
This will make it necessary for them to play certain roles for the plan to materialize. You will
need to bring them on board by gaining their acceptance, approval and support. Bringing
key people on board requires reducing the anxiety that they may have about change,

anticipating their objections and having answers ready. It's important for them to see how
your own solution will also solve their own problems. There are several techniques to make
your presentation to stakeholders as convincing as possible, including the well-renowned
PSF.
8. Implementation
Implementing your new idea is where the rubber meets the road. It's now time to walk the
talk. Without implementation, great ideas will only end up in the drain. There are usually
several psychological barriers to implementing a novel idea. These include fear of failure,
fear of the unknown, fear of imperfection, excuses, too-good-to-be-true syndrome and
inability to say "no" to distractions. Some techniques that will help you to navigate this
crucial step include worst case scenario, closure, broccoli first principle, pepperoni principle
and reverse prioritizing.

Priority Setting
To make progress in business and life, you need to get your priorities right. It is very
important for you to be working on the right goals and tasks at the right time.
Here are five principles to help you get the correct perspective:

1. All goals do not have the same value.

Your priority setting begins with choosing the goals to pursue within any given time frame.
Goals come in sizes. Some goals are so big that they appear impossible. The truth is that if
you can imagine it, you can achieve it. However, the bigger the goal, the bigger the
resources and time that you will have to commit to it. The temptation will be for you to
always pursue small goals because the effort to accomplish them is less and results are
visible in a shorter time frame. This is called trivial pursuit and leaves you achieving much
less than your potential, over a long period.
2. Some tasks are dependent on others.
In his book, Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey identified doing first
things first as one of the significant contributors to effectiveness. You need to identify the

right sequence of the activities and tasks that will lead to the achievement of your set goals,
so that you don’t put the cart before the horse. It will also help you to eliminate or reduce
unnecessary waste. If, for example, you don’t peel cassava first before putting them in a
grinding machine, what you will end up with may not be what your customers will pay for. In
the science of achievement, process is far more important than content.
3. Every idea has its own timing.
The fact that something needs to be done does not mean that it has to be done right now.
There is an appropriate time and season for everything. One of the important components
of success is knowing WHAT to do as well as WHEN to do it. A great idea can easily be
defeated if the timing or atmosphere is not yet ripe for it. A fantastic effort may be wasted if
carried out after the appropriate time for it. If, for example, you spend money on a very
strong political campaign the day after an election has been conducted, it is not likely to
achieve much.
4. Oftentimes, less is actually more.
When you concentrate your efforts on few activities at a time, you are more effective. Doing
a lot of things at the same time can stretch out your mental, physical and financial resources
in a manner that ensures none of the goals you are seeking is actually attained.
5. Some people are better at certain things than you.
Delegating is a must if you want to achieve more per time frame. You need to identify the
competencies of your team members and ensure that everyone is working on what he or
she can do best. You also need to identify other individuals and businesses that can handle
certain tasks better than anyone in your team and outsource those tasks to them.

Just Do It – An Intense Bias for Timely Action

The first component of making progress in life is to be clear in your mind about the way
forward. But after being sure of the way forward, the next important component is to
actually make that move. You may be the one delaying your own success. Usually, nothing
moves around you until you move. For actions to be effective, they must be carried out at
the right time, because the premises for those actions are often not static. According to
Winston Churchill, “…… unwillingness to act when action would be simple and effective …...
constitute the endless repetition of history”. So, how do you get yourself to follow through
on what you already know you should do?
Here are 7 easy and quick steps to help you overcome procrastination:
1. Keep the big picture in mind
You need to first refresh your mind about why you want to do the thing that you have
decided to do. What are the benefits of that line of action to you, your family, business,
career or ministry, over the next 1, 3 or 5 years? Remember that it is what you do today that
will produce the tomorrow that you are expecting. If, for example, you need to go on a
course, picture the better quality of life that you will be able to afford with your increased

income. Think of the prestige that comes whenever you are introduced in public with your
new qualification.
2. Consider the negative consequences
You need to also make a list of the negative consequences of not doing the task. What are
you likely to lose if you don’t get it done or what are you already losing by not getting it
done? If, for example, you just can’t get yourself to write a report, think of the
embarrassment you might face when asked to present your report and your other
colleagues are presenting theirs. If you find yourself putting off the placement of that
advert, remember the revenues being lost daily and the salary that will be paid at the end of
the month.
3. Identify and remove procrastination triggers
There are a lot of things that can easily trigger procrastination for different people. You
need to identify yours and get rid of them. Technology can easily be one of them. Getting rid
of procrastination triggers may involve putting your phone away for certain hours of the
day, putting off the television, not clicking on every internet link while working online,
delegating lower value tasks to junior officers or outsourcing certain services to external
providers.

4. Break it down and do it in bits

Break your task down into different stages, in right order of implementation. This will help
you to overcome the ‘big deal’ mindset. Then make a schedule of when to do each stage.
You need to have a written daily to-do list that you keep in your pocket and tick whenever
each is done. Do each stage or phase as an independent task without thinking about the
other stages. When each stage is done, move on to the next. For example, if you want to
write a book, you may first make an outline and break it down into different chapters and
sections. Then write under one chapter at a time and save. This will help you not to feel
intimated by the task.
5. Make room for interruptions
As you do your daily schedule of action, you should leave some space to attend to
interruptions. No one exists in isolation. We are all interconnected in a way. A schedule that
is too tight is not realistic. For example, you may allocate one hour after every four hours of
work to attend to unplanned interruptions. This enables you to defer all interruptions to the
allocated time slot.
6. Make a commitment to an accountability partner
One of the nicest things that you can do to yourself is to get a trusted ally on your journey to
success. If you are married, this may be your wife. If it’s work-related, this may be your
supervisor or a mentor. Make a commitment to complete that task within an agreed
timeframe.
7. Celebrate each stage of accomplishment

You need to encourage yourself by celebrating your progress. It’s a good idea to tell yourself
“Well-done” and reward yourself for each milestone that has been accomplished. Your mind
tends to gear up for the next stage when there is a sense that its previous effort was
acknowledged and rewarded. You can tie the purchase of something nice or a pleasure trip
to the achievement of certain milestones.

SPIRITUAL HERITAGE

“I have seen slaves on horses and princes walking on the ground like slaves” – Eccl. 10:7
“And I have come to deliver them out of the hands of the Egyptians.” – Ex. 3:8
“Arise, shine for your light has come and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you”- Isa.
60:1

For those that desire a deeper and more enduring mental transformation, the following
prayer program is highly recommended. It addresses the subject of one’s spiritual heritage
and proposes what can be done to carry out a complete system re-configuration that will
translate the person from a negative spiritual heritage to a positive one.
One of the first places in the Bible where the importance of spiritual heritage was seriously
underscored is in the pathetic story of Esau and Jacob. Esau had thought very little of his
spiritual rights (by virtue of being the first-born) to inherit Isaac’s blessings. So, it was not a
difficult decision for him to trade that birth right with Jacob for a meal, thinking in his heart
that what he did would not be of any consequence. How wrong he was! We all know the
rest of the story. Apart from Jacob, another notable biblical person who benefited from a
positive spiritual heritage is Solomon. In terms of inheriting negative spiritual heritage, the
descendants of Gehazi (Elisha’s servant) and the sons of King Hezekiah readily come to
mind. Two good examples of persons with a positive spiritual identity who nevertheless
suffered (for a while) from the symptoms of negative spiritual heritage are Joseph and
David. Eventually, they both entered into their true heritage. There is however no doubt at
all that this could only have been through prayer, as David himself attested to this in
Ps.109:4. Jabez is a good example of someone with a negative spiritual heritage but who
successfully overturned it, also through prayer, and subsequently entered into a positive
one. The parable of the prodigal son by Jesus is a strong pointer to the fact that people with
a positive spiritual heritage can suffer from the symptoms of a negative one if they stray
away from the Source.

The first direct confirmation by God Himself of the reality of spiritual heritage was when He
proclaimed to Moses in Ex.[Link] “The LORD, the LORD ... visiting the iniquity of the fathers
on the children and the children's children, to the third and the fourth generation." As if to
underscore the importance of this reality, He repeated the same words as part of the Ten
Commandments (Deut. 5:9).
Later in the New Testament, Apostle Paul also confirmed this reality when he said in Gal.
3:14 that we were redeemed in order that the blessing which was given to Abraham might
come to the gentiles through Christ. He further buttressed this point in Eph. 1:3, saying that
God has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. The roots of
this blessing are found in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

What is Spiritual Heritage?
Spiritual heritage can be described as the rights that a person has to enjoy or suffer certain
things on earth based, not on what he has done, but on what his parents have done. It can
be defined as the legal right that a person has in the invisible realm to experience, receive
and enjoy – or suffer – certain things in the physical realm. This legal right (or invisible
asset), just like physical possessions, is usually transferred at death from parents to their
children, based on the spiritual identity of the parents. Furthermore, unless something
changes drastically in the invisible realm, the effects of spiritual heritage would usually come
to pass irrespective of the acts of commission or omission of the bearer.
A positive spiritual heritage would then mean that legal right which leads to desirable
physical experiences for the receiver, because of the spiritual blessings that come with it.
Conversely, a negative spiritual heritage would be one that translates into undesirable
experiences for the beneficiary, because of the curses attached to it. The life of every
human being is being regulated by one of two laws, depending on whether or not the
person has accepted the sacrifice offered by Jesus on Calvary. The Apostle Paul identified
the first set of regulations as the law of sin and death and the second set as the law of the
Spirit of life. Everyone who has not accepted the sacrifice of Jesus is automatically under the
curse of the law of sin and death. When such people die, they transfer a negative spiritual
heritage to their children. Unless those children become born-again, they are legally bound
to operate under that heritage.
Sometimes, spiritual heritage is used interchangeably with such terms as ‘destiny’,
‘blessings’ and ‘curses’, though it is more encompassing. Broadly, it can be visualized as the
invisible load on a person’s head – everybody carries his/her own load, but the difference is
in the contents of what they each carry. Jesus said in Matthew [Link] “... for my yoke is easy
and my burden is light”. So, the question is: “What yoke or burden are you carrying and how
heavy or light is your own burden?”

General Attributes of Spiritual Heritage

1. There is hierarchy in spiritual heritage. This means that there are many levels
and if there is a conflict between the contents of any two levels, the contents of the
higher level will take precedence over those of the lower. This precedence may be in
an absolute sense or in respect to timing of physical implementation.
2. Spiritual heritage is of varying intensity. Some are stronger and more deeply-
rooted than others. As a result, some are more difficult to overturn than others.
3. There is usually some delay in the physical manifestation of spiritual heritage.
Someone with a negative spiritual heritage can enjoy the symptoms of a positive one
for a long time before his/her true heritage manifests. In the same way, a person
who has a positive spiritual heritage may endure the symptoms of a negative one for
some time. That is why the Bible says in Psalms 37 that people should not envy the
prosperity of the wicked because of their gloomy end. That is also why God

 encouraged the Israelites during a period of monumental national tragedy, through
the Prophet Jeremiah (Jer.29:11), that “For I know the plans I have for you, declares
the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope”.
4. Spiritual heritage can be manipulated at the lower levels. Skilled enchanters
and diviners, if permitted, can exchange one person’s good heritage with another’s
bad heritage and vice versa. This cannot happen at the highest level where God
dwells but at the other levels below it, just before the physical. This is exactly what
Balak asked Balaam to do against the Israelites and it still happens today. In line with
this principle, it is also possible for a person’s positive spiritual heritage to be stolen.
That is why Jesus warns that the enemy comes, amongst other things, to steal.
5. Spiritual heritage has cumulative capacity. A person may succeed in adding to
or subtracting from the spiritual heritage he/she got from his/her parents before
passing them over to his/her own children.

Symptoms of Negative Spiritual Heritage

The symptoms (or physical evidences) of a negative spiritual heritage will limit the believer
and restrain him/her from reaching his/her potentials in this life. The story is told of a new-
born eagle that was raised up in the midst of chickens. It grew up never knowing how to fly
– or that it was even meant to fly in the first place! Its life was forever consigned to picking
up dust just like the “other” chickens around it.
This analogy is true for a lot of believers. However, for many others, the story is not exactly
like that. These ones know that they are eagles; they know that they are meant to soar and
even desire strongly to do so. But they just CANNOT do so; they are being held back by big
rocks that have been tied to their legs. They need someone to help cut off the ropes that tie
the rocks to their legs.
The symptoms (or physical evidences) of a negative spiritual heritage are many. They could
include anything that is negative and limiting as well as experiences or situations that
contradict the will of God for the believer, as revealed in the Scriptures. Examples are abject
poverty/indebtedness, persistent sicknesses and diseases, spiritual blindness/deafness,
sustained barrenness, general mediocrity, stagnation, successive strings of failure,
demonic oppression, cyclical miscarriages, untimely death etc.
Symptoms of spiritual heritage can be visualized as the garment that people wear – some
are clean and well-tailored while others are mere rags!
Care must nevertheless be taken not to take everything that is negative or undesirable to be
a symptom of negative spiritual heritage. This is because some experiences could be
permitted by God to try the believer’s faith or to help build up character. Others could be a
form of God’s discipline for believers who continue to live in wilful sin. One main difference
between trials of faith and God’s discipline on one side and symptoms of negative spiritual
heritage on the other is that the former tend to be temporary in nature while the latter are
more enduring – sometimes extending into two or more generations.

It must be noted that all symptoms of negative spiritual heritage are acts of oppression from
the enemy and must be firmly resisted, otherwise they will limit the believer from becoming
all that he/she is originally destined to become.

The Current Situation

While there are a few Christians who have managed to come under the cover of their
rightful positive spiritual heritage, it is an unfortunate fact that many still suffer from
negative spiritual heritage. They suffer from the repercussions of the accumulated
wickedness of their great grand-parents through their grand-parents and parents to their
own trespasses before giving their lives to Christ. Many believers are living far below their
potentials – victims of life’s circumstances instead of the victors they were created to be.
They have accepted Christ Jesus as Lord and Saviour. They know that they have a new life
and a destiny of excellence in Him but they just cannot rise up from the mediocrity and
stagnation of the former life. They have tried many fire-fighting schemes, only to discover
that another fire soon starts after one is extinguished. They attend one miracle service and
are able to solve one symptom but other symptoms quickly show up afterwards. In some
cases, it has reached a point where they’re now ashamed to let their neighbours and
colleagues know that they are Christians, because there’s nothing to show for it. Although
they are princes, they are walking on the ground (and, in many cases, bare-footed!) while
the slaves are riding on horses.
Some adults can barely feed themselves, not to talk of taking care of a family. Others are
okay financially but are occupied with “managing” some serious health conditions. Yet some
others enjoy good health but simply live perpetually in mediocrity and never really achieve
anything in life. Some have been in the same position for years and decades without any
progress at all. Many other believers have not been led by the Holy Spirit on any issue for
several years – some have never had the privilege of being able to boldly say “this is what
the Lord says” on any matter.

The Reason
The Scriptures are very clear that the above situation is not supposed to be the case. All
believers are supposed to be the beneficiaries of a positive spiritual heritage from Abraham
(who lived in the pre-Mosaic era) through the sacrifice of Christ Jesus. So, why do we still
have this situation, well over 2000 years after the ascension of Christ?
Although it is true that we actually get a new life upon acceptance of Jesus as Lord and
Saviour, it’s not much different from a new King being installed after the overthrow and
death of a previous one. If, however, the new King does not dismantle the old policies and
structures of governance and put his own structures in place, it will still be business as usual
and he will at best remain a mere puppet. That is what the new lives in many believers are –
mere puppets, not in effective control! The former King is dead but all his loyalists are still in
positions of authority in the Provinces, all his Ministers are still functioning in their posts,
the Military is still being commanded by his appointees and the members of his domestic

staff are still the ones cooking and cleaning in the Palace. What else will they be doing other
than to secretly undermine the new King and plot his death?
Imagine that, after the overthrow of Saddam Hussein, his Baath Party, Ministers, Governors,
personal staff and other senior government officials are still left in their positions!
So, while Christ has put the old man (the former ‘King’) to death by the cross, the believer is
expected to go in this power and authority to sack all of his (the dead King’s) officers. The
believer is expected to demolish all former structures and cancel all former obligations with
the power and authority that God has now given in Christ. Normally, the law of contract says
that an offer remains invalid until accepted. However, in the jungle where the devil reigns, it
says that an offer remains valid until it is rejected. So, believers who don’t reject the devil’s
offers are presumed to have accepted them and will have to live with such offers. It should
be noted that the Bible does not say “work for your salvation” but it says “work out your
salvation”. This means that while God has given salvation freely, the receiver has a part to
play in ensuring that the reality of this salvation is outwardly visible. Unfortunately, this has
not happened yet in many lives. In fact, some household demons have not been disturbed
or challenged at all for many generations.
Secondly, many true believers want to live righteous lives but find that they keep doing all
the wrong things which they had vowed never to do again. They are literally at the Romans
7:22-25 junctions of their lives. When believers continue to live in sin, this gives the enemy a
legal right to block the physical manifestation of their positive spiritual heritage because a
man is a slave to whatever has mastered him and you cannot be serving one master while
expecting reward from another. If you are not doing God’s will, then you have no moral
justification to demand for God’s will to be done in your life. In the Lord’s Prayer, “Your will
be done ...” came first before “Give us ...”. God’s promise of “you will eat the best of the
land” was preceded by “If you are willing and obedient”. So, if you’re still living in sin, you
have already disqualified yourself from the symptoms of a positive heritage and made your
enemy’s task easier. You’re already boxed in a corner. You have already been “solved”. We
are not talking of wilful sin here. The person living in wilful sin has not even started at all.
We are talking of the one that Apostle Paul refers to in Heb.12:1 as “the sin that easily
besets”.

 CHAPTER 7
THE MANUAL
This prayer manual is a combination of several potent truths that have been re-constructed
into personal application formats. It presents to you the Sword of the Spirit in a form that
can be easily handled to set yourself free from unnecessary spiritual limitations. It uses the
prayer of affirmation to get rid of the old spiritual heritage and the prayer of assertion to
usher you into the new and positive heritage that you are entitled to in Christ. Its
foundational theology is the central truth of our co-death with Christ (Galatians 2:20). It
effectively addresses the legal technicalities required for successful spiritual warfare,
considering that the enemy is a liar who often manipulates spiritual legalities to unlawfully
occupy territories. I don’t know if we would ever have the opportunity to see Satan face-to-
face. But if we do, we should not be surprised if we discover that he is a lawyer by
profession!
This prayer manual is a do-it-yourself tool designed to demolish everything that belongs to
the dead old nature (including everything that was inherited from his ancestry) and put in
place the favourable environment and circumstances that are the entitlements of the new
nature. It is not another emergency fire extinguisher (though there may be immediate relief
of some of the symptoms). It is more like a general, but thorough, spiritual fumigation
exercise. It may be likened to what anti-virus software is to a computer system.
The prayer does not have scripture references mixed with it for two reasons. One is to allow
the user concentrate. The second is that the devil does not need any references to yield to a
lawful demand – he already knows all the scriptures being quoted but has merely been
waiting for you to know and affirm them.

Why the Manual?

There are at least three reasons why this work is relevant at this time to the Body of Christ:
1. Although the Bible is the most widely distributed Book in the world today,
many believers have not yet been equipped with the skills to effectively wield the
Sword contained in its armoury. Some are already aware of the reality of spiritual
heritage as well as its symptoms, but they just don’t know how to solve the problem.
Most of the time, many believers only grumble about their situations, without really
praying.
2. Even those who have been trained in the use of the Sword often find
themselves running short of words in the place of prayer. Sometimes, we really want
to pray but discover that we just don’t have anything to say again after about 10 to
15 minutes.
A written text like this one helps to handle such situations.

 3. Experience has shown that enduring victory over the forces of darkness is
achieved through repetition of the same words over and over. It is said that in the
battle between the river and the rock, the river eventually wins. It is not because the
river is stronger than the rock but because the river flows repeatedly along the same
path on the rock. Also, the axe is able to eventually bring down the tree because it
keeps biting repeatedly on the same spot. A standard prayer format like this helps to
achieve this.

Is this for Me?

Probably yes – if you are born-again and one or more of the following is true about you:
- At least one person amongst your great grand-parents, your grand-parents
and your parents was not born-again in his/her lifetime.
- You know that you are operating very far below your potential
- At least one of the symptoms highlighted above is presently ravaging your
life. It is advisable that you do a thorough examination before concluding that this
does not apply to you. This is because the devil is a master in the art of deception.
One of his greatest deceptions is to cover up his activities and stay undetected.

How to Use the Manual

1. Start with your favourite praise and worship songs.
2. Pray for forgiveness for any manner in which you might have fallen short of
God’s standards.
3. Pray for at least one person that you know, who is presently going through a
difficult period.
4. Read out the words of the prayer (sections one to four) continuously in loud
confessions, repeating some of the statements over and over as you are led by the
Holy Spirit. Speak boldly like someone who means what he/she is saying. The seven
most common symptoms are expressly addressed in the manual. You are to
thereafter address any other symptoms peculiar to you, employing the same format
indicated.
5. Pray in tongues in between as the Holy Spirit leads you.
6. End with your favourite songs of thanksgiving.
Do the above for 90 days in a straight row, combining it with either full or partial fasting and
giving each day. Have an ‘extra oil’ of another 30 days ready, in case your situation requires
it.

For greater effectiveness, believers can form themselves into groups to run through the
program, meeting daily at set times and in agreed places to read out the prayer together. It
will help to muster the discipline that may be required for completion. This is especially
because the devil will make every effort to ensure that everyone who manages to start the
prayer program never finishes it.
After the completion of the prayer program, continue doing it once in a week for as many
years as possible.

Are There Any Prerequisites?

Yes. The first condition that must be met before using this manual is salvation – that you
have accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. The reason is that this condition is the
premise upon which the prayer is based and the prayer can only be counter-productive if
the condition is not met. By accepting Jesus as Lord and Saviour, it is presumed that such a
person has stopped living in wilful sin.
However, if you have not yet accepted Christ as Lord and Saviour, you can do so now – right
away. Just say the following words and be sure that you mean it:

Lord Jesus, I accept you right now into my life as my Lord and Saviour. I believe that You are
the Way, the Truth and the Life. I am truly sorry for all that I have done in the past against
God and my fellow men. I accept the suffering and death you went through on Calvary as the
propitiation for all my sins. Please forgive me and make me a part of the Kingdom of your
Father. Give me your Holy Spirit and help me to live uprightly. Thank you for answering my
prayer.

If you’ve just done the above, congratulations! You have just gained membership of God’s
wonderful family. You now have a new, positive spiritual heritage at the highest level.
Please proceed with the prayer program and ask God to guide you as you find and join a
Bible-believing church near you.
If you have accepted Jesus as Lord and Saviour in the past but have been living perpetually
in wilful sin, you need to honestly re-dedicate your life to your Maker before starting the
program.

The second condition that must be met is love – love for all the people you have come
across in life, including those that have hurt you. You cannot separate love from forgiveness.
There is a true saying that “to forgive is to set a prisoner free, only to discover that the
prisoner is you!”. You must realize, as Joseph did, that ALL the ‘evil’ that people meant for
you were permitted by God and would eventually be used for your good – if you allow Him.
You allow Him to use them for your good when you let those people go, like Jesus did when

He said “Father forgive them for they know not what they are doing”. For as long as you
hold on to those people, you are holding on to yourself! If you’re having some struggles with
this demand, it is okay – the author too had a long struggle with it before finally yielding to
the superiority of its truth. Go ahead with your struggle until God reveals its meaning to
you. Thereafter, choose freedom by forgiving and letting go. Then proceed with the prayer.

What to Expect During / After the Prayer Program

A few days into the prayer program, you may notice some of the symptoms going away, but
don’t be deceived into stopping or relenting. The enemy may be trying to “settle” you so
that you will withdraw your attack, giving them the chance to quickly get organized and
reinforce their defences. If this happens, they will still be in a position to re-visit those
symptoms on you later and resisting them will be much more difficult then.
In some cases, the symptoms will get worse. Still, don’t be discouraged. In this case, your
enemy is trying to intimidate you into submission. You remember that Pharaoh increased
the labour of the Hebrews the moment they started talking of leaving Egypt.
In many other cases, you may not notice any physical changes at all for several days into the
program. The enemy will try to convince you that it’s not working, that you’re just wasting
your time. Nothing could be more untrue. Deep within your spirit, you will be able to sense
that you are changing. As long as you are changing, your circumstances will change in a
matter of time. So, don’t be deceived into stopping. Remember that a tree does not
necessarily fall down at the first strike of an axe.
If you faithfully complete the prayer program, I trust the Lord that you will experience
lasting visible changes in those areas where you have been kept down. Previously
unbelievable things will happen in your life. You will earn the right to be “lucky”. Even if it
appears that there are no immediate physical changes, you are certain to gain a new insight
into the source(s) of your problems. Revelation will come and you will know what actions to
take in order to secure the victory that you seek (Joshua 7:7-13). In any case, you cannot
speak God’s word out consistently and audibly over this length of time and remain the same
for the rest of your life.

you should have ‘seen’ the Kingdom. But, are you ready to ‘enter’? Are you REALLY ready?

Are you desperate enough? You cannot change a situation that you are not desperately
dissatisfied with. No matter how bad your situation is, if you can still “manage” it, it will not
go!

We’ve done a lot of talking already; now let’s get to work on the next few pages. I pray that

my God, for He has laid down precepts that are to be fully obeyed. I yield all my members as

have dominion over me. I will not have any other gods apart from Jehovah, the only true
God. I will not make for myself any image of anything in heaven, on earth or below the

DISLODGING
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the
authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual

In the Name of Jesus Christ, I come against you Satan and all the principalities, powers,
authorities, dominions, rulers of darkness, spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly
places as well as all your human agents that are gathered against my life and my household,
occupying my promised land and troubling us. This is what the scriptures say concerning
you: “Gather together but you will be scattered. Devise your strategies but they will be
thwarted. Propose your plans but they will not stand, for God is with us”. Therefore, in the
Name of Jesus Christ and by the earthquakes of God, I come to dislodge and scatter you
from the heavens above this place. In the Name of Jesus Christ and by the earthquakes of
God, I come to dislodge and scatter you from the earth and world below. In the Name of
Jesus Christ and by the Tsunamis of God, I come to dislodge and scatter you from the waters
above the earth as well as the waters below it. In the Name of Jesus Christ, I command all
your strategies to be thwarted and all your plans to fail, according to the word of the Lord.
The scriptures say: “I am the Lord, who frustrates the signs of liars and makes fools of
diviners, who turns wise men back and makes their knowledge foolish”. In the Name of
Jesus Christ and according to the word of the Lord, let all your wisdom become foolishness,
let all your intelligence be frustrated, let all your lies be exposed and let all your diviners be
disgraced. The scriptures say that there is no peace for the wicked. Therefore, in the Name
of Jesus Christ, let your peace be cut off immediately and let panic overwhelm you all. It is
also written that terror grips the godless. Therefore, let the terror of God grip all of you
right now for my sake and for the sake of my household, in the mighty Name of Jesus Christ.
Let the terror of God penetrate all your camps for our sake right now and scatter you all, in
the Name of Jesus Christ.
The scriptures say: “Let us make man in our image and ……. let them have dominion over
the earth”. Therefore, in the Name of Jesus Christ, I conform to the fullness of the image of
Christ, I recover my stolen dominion right now and I enforce it on the earth, according to
the word of the Lord. The scriptures say that I am seated with Christ Jesus in the heavenly
places, far above every principality and power, above every authority and dominion and
above every name that is named, not only in this world but also in the world to come. It is
also written that my life is hidden with God in Christ Jesus. I believe it, therefore I have
spoken. And I receive it in the Name of Jesus Christ. I henceforth occupy my seat with Christ

in the heavenly places. From that seat and in the Name of Jesus Christ, I exercise power,
dominion and authority over you, Satan, and all the principalities, powers, authorities,
dominions, rulers of darkness, spiritual forces of wickedness in heavenly places as well as all
your human agents that have been troubling my life and my household. From my position
with Christ, I subdue you Satan, along with all your cohorts and I break up all your bones in
the Name of Jesus Christ. It is written: “Let him rain coals on the wicked; fire and sulfur and
a scorching wind shall be the portion of their cup”. Therefore, in the Name of Jesus Christ,
from my seat with Christ, I open the floodgates of brimstones and burning sulphur upon the
heads of Satan and all the principalities, powers, authorities, dominions, rulers of darkness,
spiritual forces of wickedness in heavenly places as well as all their human agents who have
been troubling my life and my household, occupying my promised land and rebelling against
my authority. I channel the flood of brimstones and burning sulphur into all your shelters
and hiding places, in the Name of Jesus Christ. Let that flood of burning sulphur pursue and
overtake you all, in the Name of Jesus Christ. The scriptures say “Touch not my anointed
ones, do my prophets no harm”, and that it is God who establishes and anoints me and
also puts His seal on me. Therefore, in the Name of Jesus Christ, let there be an outpouring
of brimstones and burning sulphur upon the heads of Satan and every principality, power,
authority, dominion, ruler of darkness, spiritual force of wickedness in heavenly places as
well as all their human agents that are disobeying this command of the Lord by rebelling
against my authority, frustrating, harassing, besieging or troubling me and my household in
any way, as well as occupying my promised land. Let it flow into all your hiding places,
tunnels and bunkers right now, in the Name of Jesus Christ. From my position with Christ, I
channel down brimstones and burning sulphur upon the heads of Satan and every
principality, power, authority, dominion, ruler of darkness, spiritual force of wickedness in
heavenly places as well as all their human agents that are diverting the answers to my
prayers, in the mighty Name of Jesus Christ. Let that flood of burning sulphur pursue and
overtake you all, in the Name of Jesus Christ. I release the scorching wind upon your heads,
in the Name of Jesus Christ. The scriptures say that as wax melts before the fire, so the
wicked shall perish before God. Therefore, let the fire of the Lord burn to vapour Satan and
every principality, power, authority, dominion, ruler of darkness, spiritual force of
wickedness in heavenly places as well as all their human agents that have been stealing my
life’s treasures, in the Name of Jesus Christ. Let it happen now, for it is written: “You shall
not steal”. I speak in the mighty Name of Jesus Christ.
It is written: “The labour of the wicked shall be fuel for the fire” and “So I will kindle a fire
in the wall of Rabbah, and it shall devour her strongholds, with shouting on the day of
battle, with a tempest in the day of the whirlwind”. The scriptures say: “You will be visited
by the LORD of hosts with thunder and with earthquake and great noise, with whirlwind
and tempest, and the flame of a devouring fire”. It is also written: "For behold, the LORD
will come in fire, and his chariots like the whirlwind, to render his anger in fury, and his

The scriptures say that there is now no condemnation for those of us who are in Christ
Jesus for the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set us free from the law of sin and
death. I believe it, therefore I have spoken. And I receive it in the Name of Jesus Christ.
Therefore, on the authority of this word of God and in the mighty Name of Jesus Christ, I
declare my freedom from every condemnation arising from all my past actions and words as

the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus, I refute every accusing tongue against me and my household,
in the Name of Jesus Christ.
It is written that there is no enchantment against Jacob and there is no divination against
Israel. Since I am a spiritual descendant of Jacob by faith through the gospel of Jesus Christ, I
command, in the Name of Jesus Christ, that every enchantment and every divination against
my life and household should fail, should be nullified and reversed, with immediate effect.
Every evil word that has been spoken into my destiny and the destinies of the members of
my household, I command you to fail, to be nullified and reversed, with immediate effect, in
the mighty Name of Jesus Christ. Every evil writing or inscription that has been written
against my destiny and the destinies of the members of my household, I command you to

It is written that Christ cancelled the written code, with its regulations that was against us
and that stood opposed to us. He took it away, nailing it to the cross. I believe it, therefore

cancellation of the written code in my life and in my household. In the Name of Jesus Christ

operating in my life be cancelled, with immediate effect.
I exercise the power and authority that I have in Christ to rebuke you poverty, sicknesses
and diseases, spiritual blindness and deafness, barrenness, mediocrity, stagnation and
untimely death in my life and my household. I hereby rebuke and eject you all in the Name
of Jesus Christ! I hereby rebuke and eject you all in the Name of Jesus Christ!! I hereby
rebuke and eject you all in the Name of Jesus Christ!!! The Lord rebukes you all for my sake.
The scriptures say that he that is rebuked over and over, but does not take heed, that
sudden destruction will come upon him without remedy and disaster will overtake him in
an instant. Therefore, as many of you poverty, sicknesses and diseases, spiritual blindness
and deafness, barrenness, mediocrity, stagnation and untimely death that have not taken
heed to my rebuke, let it be unto you according to the word of the Lord – let sudden
destruction come upon you without remedy, let disaster overtake you in an instant. Let it
happen to you right now, in the mighty Name of Jesus Christ.

I thank you, my Heavenly Father, for all your promises for my life. I believe and receive them
all in the mighty Name of Jesus Christ, because I know fully well that it is impossible for God
to lie. Thank you for making everlasting joy to crown my head and making sorrow and
sighing to flee away. Thank you for making my eyes to be blessed because they see, and my
ears to be blessed because they hear. Thank you for putting the light of life in me, such that
I do not walk in darkness. Thank you for causing light to dawn for me even in the darkness.
Thank you for making me more than a conqueror through Christ in all things. Oh God of
peace, I thank you for crushing the head of Satan under my feet. Thank you for making me
to be above only and not below. Thank you for making me to be the head and not the tail.
Thank you for ensuring that no weapon fashioned against me prospers. Thank you for
helping me to condemn every tongue that rises against me in judgement. Thank you for
ensuring that if anyone attacks me, it will not be your doing. Thank you for ensuring that
whoever attacks me surrenders to me. Thank you for ensuring that if they come up against
me in one way, they will flee in seven ways. Thank you for making the nation or kingdom
that will not serve me to perish and be completely ruined. Thank you for contending with
whoever contends with me and saving my children. Thank you because whoever touches
me touches the apple of Your eye. Thank you for making my walls to be called Salvation and
my gates to be called Praise. Thank you, Lord, for making my foundations to be of precious
stones. Thank you, Father, for causing rivers of living waters to flow out of my belly, welling
up to eternal life. Thank you for making me receive when I ask, making me find when I seek
and opening unto me when I knock. Thank you for making me like a tree planted by streams
of water; making me bear my fruits in season and ensuring that my leaves never wither but
are evergreen. Thank you, Father, for making whatever I lay my hands on to prosper. Thank
you for making I and my household to prosper and be in health as our souls prosper. We
appreciate you, Lord for satisfying us with long life and fulfilling the length of our days.
Thank you for ensuring that the crops of my field are not destroyed, and my vine does not
drop its fruit in the field before its time. Thank you, Lord, for making my wife not to miscarry
and ensuring that none is barren in my land. Thank you for giving me the mind of Christ and
making me know all things by the anointing of the Spirit of Jesus Christ. I appreciate you,
Lord, for making me the light of the world and the salt of the earth. Thank you for ensuring
that my lamp is not kept under the bushel but is put on its lamp stand. Thank you for making
me not lose my saltiness. Father, I thank you for ensuring that when I decree a thing, it
comes to pass. Thank you for making me to have life and have it abundantly. Thank you for
enabling me to lend to many and borrow from none. Thank you for making me blessed in
the city and blessed in the country. Thank you for making these blessings to pursue me and

overtake me. Thank you, Lord, for ensuring that, at any point in time, I always have access to
more money than I know what to do with. Thank you for making me to eat the best of the
land. Thank you for making me to be strong and do mighty exploits. Thank you for renewing
my strength, making me mount up on wings like the eagle, walk and not be weary as well as
run and not faint. Thank you for ensuring that when I trample upon serpents and scorpions,
nothing harms me. Thank you for ensuring that even if I eat deadly poison, it will not hurt
me. Thank you, Lord, for training my hands for war and arming me with strength for the
battle. Thank you, Father, because with you, I can match out against an army and I can scale
a mighty wall. Thank you for being my light and my salvation and keeping my lamp burning.
Thank you, Lord, for being my strength and the stronghold of my life. Thank you for being
my refuge and my hiding place. Thank you for making my feet like the feet of a deer and
enabling me to climb my high places. Thank you for not letting my foot slip. Thank you, Lord,
for giving me the nations for my inheritance and the uttermost parts of the earth for my
possession. Thank you for loosening the loins of kings before me. Thank you for hiding my
household and I in your secret place, under the shadow of your wings. We will not fear the
arrow that flies by day. We will not fear the terror of the night. We will not fear the
pestilence that lurks in the darkness. We will not fear the destruction that lays waste at mid-
day. Thank you, O Lord, because they will not come near our dwelling. Thank you for being
our shade at our right hand and ensuring that the Sun does not harm us by day nor the
Moon by night. As the mountains surround Jerusalem, in the same way the Lord surrounds
us, both now and forever more. Thank you for making your Angel to encamp near us night
and day. O Father, we appreciate you, in the Name of Jesus Christ!

GOING FURTHER

You are already delivered from the burdens of negative spiritual heritage and on your path
to the complete liberty of the Spirit, which is your rightful heritage in Christ Jesus. You are

walking after the Spirit.

3. obeying all the commandments of God
4. following the voice of the Spirit, even when it is not convenient
