Introduction to Quadratic Equations

The document introduces the topic of functions and quadratic equations for Class #2 on 10-05-2023. It discusses the factorized form of a quadratic equation f(x) = (x - α)(x - β) = 0, where α and β are the roots. Expanding this equation gives the standard form x2 + bx + c = 0, where the sum of the roots α + β is equal to -b, and the product of the roots αβ is equal to c. This allows finding the sum and product of roots without explicitly solving for the roots. The document provides 25 practice problems to find the roots, sum of roots, and product of roots for different quadratic equations using these properties.

Topic – Introduction to Functions and Quadratic Equations

Concept Introduction

Let's consider a quadratic equation in its factorized form:

f(x) = (x - α)(x - β) = 0

Here, α and β are the roots of the equation. If we expand this equation, we get:

f(x) = x² - (α + β)x + αβ = 0

Comparing this with the standard form of a quadratic equation x² + bx + c = 0, we can see that:

1. The sum of the roots (α + β) is equal to -b

2. The product of the roots (αβ) is equal to c

Using these properties, we can find the sum and product of the roots of any quadratic equation
without actually finding the roots. This can be very useful in many mathematical and real-world
applications.

Now, let's solve some problems!
