QUARANTANIM

home. This is being of ways to become productive during the Enhanced Community
Quarantine.
Aling Joana and her husband do ‘quarantanim’. Instead of waste their time during
the lockdown they planted vegetables in their backyard. Their children namely John and
Johna help them in planting and watering their plants. They put organic fertilizer to assure
that their plants grow healthy. After two months of lockdown, their vegetable plants grew
well and bore fruits. They shared their harvests to their neighbors, relatives and

Is Wearing Face Mask, a Solution?
by: Charo Luisa L. Basilio

COVID-19, became the world’s number one problem at present. It killed numerous
people and infected millions. They say that the droplet transmission occurs when a person
is in close contact with someone who has respiratory symptoms such as coughing and
sneezing. There are suggested precautions to avoid the acquisition of this virus. One of
these is wearing face mask. Wearing a face mask will protect you from contracting
airborne infectious germs. When someone coughs, talks, sneezes he/she could release
germs into the air that may infect others nearby. With a facemask, the virus cannot reach
any entry point in our faces. Hence, the face mask is a protective gear. Face masks are part
of an infection control strategy to eliminate cross-contamination.

Second Chance to Life
by: Charo Luisa L. Basilio

I was in middle school when I started my soul-searching. I attended various religious

gatherings such as ‘Born Again Christian’ until I found the one that fits the whole me. I told
myself that I finally found a place where I can be at peace and more comfortable with the
Lord.
However, way back in 2011, my faith seemed to be tested by this single experience that
changed my life forever. First, I was rushed to the hospital because I was suffering from an
on and off fever which lasted for days. My Mom took me to two different hospitals to assure
me that I will be fine but it didn’t go well. Doctors said it’s just a mild fever but suddenly I
lost lots of blood, had high fever which rushed all over my body. I was soon diagnosed with
dengue fever. Unfortunately, I have to undergo blood transfusion. During my blood
transfusion, my vital signs dropped off. I experienced seizures and I couldn’t control my jaw
locking. It was really a hard time. Until, I told my Mom that I wanted to give up. My Mom
told me to hold on. We prayed hard and listened to Christian songs. When dawn came,
nothing had changed with my vital signs and they have to rush me to the ICU. As the doctor
and nurses patiently attended to my medical needs something strange happened. My vital
signs immediately became normal and as if I didn’t go through hell, my doctor was quite
amazed of my progress.
Now, I realized that there are reasons to live and reasons to stay. My life is indeed a miracle

How to Enjoy ECQ
by: Charo Luisa L. Basilio

During this Enhanced Community Quarantine, many of us stayed in our homes and we
almost felt bored. There are lots of things that we could do in order to enjoy the ECQ. First,
engage in activities that could enhance your skills like reading books, open and learn from
DepEd Commons on line, write short poems and stories and do some arts, like drawing,
painting and recycling. Second, teach your younger siblings to write, recognize letters, read
stories and count numbers. Another, help your parents do errands at home like washing
the dishes, preparing food and cleaning the surroundings. Furthermore, enjoy doing these
things and never forget to pray because this is the most important thing to do.

No Greater Joy
By: Cynthia Q. Lelina

“I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.” (3
John1:1-8). When I read this from the Our Daily Bread book, I remembered the story of a
Pinoy nurse, Felino Bautista from Luna, Isabela who works Wales, United Kingdom and
owes second life to unwavering faith. Before, his condition worsened he isolated himself
from his family. Shortly, he was rushed to the hospital, his condition became critical. He

intubated. Then, in that critical time he surrendered his fate to God and it humbles him
when everyone in his congregation and others from different faith prayed for him. Finally,
he received the miracle, he was discharged. Eventually, Bautista said, “Don’t depend on
your own strength. Depend on the Lord…There was always conviction in prayer.”

The Power of Gratitude?

by: Cynthia Q. Lelina

Have you counted your blessings? Have you tried to thank God for giving your
life? Have you thanked your parents for taking care of you? Giving you food, clothes,
house to live in and for sending you to school. When I watched Fr. Jerry Orbos in the
Divine Word Media PH, his quote caught my attention, “Gratitude is the Best Attitude”.
To be grateful for everything we receive is something I am reminded of. The more we
learn to be grateful, the more blessings we receive. So we must learn to thank even in the
little things we receive. One great blessing to be grateful for to God is having our family
because with them we can fulfill our dreams. Therefore, if we fill our hearts with
gratefulness, this will lead us to a happier and more peaceful life. That’s the power of
gratitude.

1. Arnel was walking to the canteen for his break. He was craving for something delicious.
On his way, he saw all his classmates buying ham burger. The burger looks yummy. One of
his classmates urged him to buy the same. He was thinking to buy the same just to join the
group. While, he was in the line, he heard Ryan Bang over the radio saying, “Fudgee bar over
sa sarap,”. So, he added fudgee bar to his checklist because he remembered he idolized
Ryan. Arnel is next in line when he heard the guy beside him saying, “The ham burger is like
ban burger. I didn’t taste the ham. I regretted my choice.” He ended replacing it with
sandwich because it was featured on the school paper. The author mentioned it as the best
sandwich ever.

2. During this global crisis, a lot of people specifically Filipinos are struggling to survive daily.
The government is facing a tough battle but is very positive in helping the middle class, the
poor and the poorest of the poor despite being insulted by the anti-government. The anti-
government conducted numerous rallies to point that the administration is a failure in
addressing the country’s crisis. According to them, the government has no intention to help
its people, instead, they keep pocketing funds, as they dubbed it as, “The most corrupt of
all.” They are also trying to disqualify all the efforts of the government to help and protect
its people by propagating misinformation, deceiving people through negative articles and
news. For now, we are facing a problem that affects the whole world. We have to face this
pandemic as one, as united people. Covid-19 chooses no one. The rich or poor, politicians,
celebrities or the ordinary people. Therefore, we will be able to surpass this challenge if we
will exert great effort of solidarity and not by dividing the people and the administration. In
times like this we need to work as a team in order to heal as one.

The Ant and the Grasshopper

There were once good friends named Ant and Grasshopper. Ant is a hardworking
tiny insect while grasshopper is a jolly one.
During the fair weather, the Ant worked a lot in the farm storing food. He went
through and fro looking and compiling food carrying them on his tiny back. Meanwhile,
the Grasshopper watched him slowly marching on to his house. He teased the ant and
made fun of what he was doing. He even told the Ant that he is wasting his time storing
food when the weather calls for a fun play in the farm. But the Ant just smiled at the
Grasshopper and continued with what he was working on.
After some days, the rainy season comes. The Grasshopper looks pitiful, cold and
hungry. Meanwhile, the Ant is contented having breakfast in his house. The Grasshopper
knocks on Ant’s door. He begs his friend to let him stay at his home and have some food
to eat. Ant helped his friend.
Since then, the grasshopper learned that he must prioritize to prepare for tomorrow
and not spend his time doing nothing.
