Learning To Heal Part 2

This document provides an introduction to part two of a series on holistic healing systems that can be learned to heal oneself or others without medication. It discusses energy therapies like Reiki, Pranic healing, acupressure, and aromatherapy that involve energy work with some body manipulation through massage or tools. These therapies are believed to treat both symptoms and root causes by working with the body's energy channels and points. Links to free online lessons for these therapies are provided. Precautions note that these may be best for physiological or psychological issues rather than infections, and regular medication should not be stopped without medical approval.

THIS IS HOBBY HELP SERIES FOR
SENIORS.

I am compiling a series of things to do - what to do to counter

loneliness, in addition, how to go about it.

This is about Alternate Holistic Energy therapies, part two.

These are no pill variety. All the healing is done by natural energy and
some bodywork or devices. There are several themes on it, and I have
covered the most known ones.

As before this covers the therapy, how it works, where to get free
online training and other help.

I have given the links that are the most visited. As on December
2009, all links are Secure, correct and working.

You should look for more as you surf. You may find many that will
suit to your needs. This is just a first step.

Please feel free to share this with anyone you like.

Learn To Heal II

Introduction

This is part two of holistic healing systems that we can learn to use to
heal or energize ourselves or others.
These are all non invasive and do not require any oral medication.
Most of them do not cause any side effect. I have indicated any
special precautions where needed along with the information about
the therapy.
They are all easily learnt and practiced. As they all involve use
of universal energy, they are also free – you may have to pay
only for lessons if needed. Though I have provided free links
for online lessons and courses also.
These are not only for healing, but also for maintenance.
Following these systems will help keep body and mind
deterioration at bay.
If these help you, and you become proficient, you can also help
others.
All the links are secure and correct as on December 2009.

Remember there is no magic supplement or herb or diet as the

main form of Holistic Medicine treatment. There are many
conmen who like to take advantage of this wave of holistic healing.
Do not believe or buy if someone offers any such thing. It may
temporarily suppress the symptoms, and often causes more
serious health problems in the long run.

Definitions

Alternative Medicine –
Alternative therapies are offered as an option to conventional or
Western medical treatments. Ayurveda, Homeopathy, TCM are
alternative Medicines.

Complementary Medicine –
The therapies which are used in combination with conventional or
Western medical treatments. Most of the holistic therapies are of this
kind. Crystal, Magnets, Aromatherapy are all Complementary
medicines.

Integrative Medicine –
Some therapies are integrated into the mainstream. Massage therapy,
acupuncture, meditation and chiropractic medicine have been
integrated into established medical care programs for some time now.

There are more than hundred holistic therapies as recognized by the

World Health Organization.
I have included only some of the better known. All these can be
learned easily and used on self or on others.
All these use universal energy in one of these three ways:
1. Exercises – Taichi, Qigong
2. Body work – manipulating the body parts by massaging
relevant points in the body - Acupressure, Sujok,
Aromatherapy
3. Vibrational – Crystal, Music, Magnets

Holistic Healing Concepts

Our discomforts or pains are just symptoms of energy imbalance.

The imbalance could be
Physical – due to unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, or too little
sleep.
Mental or emotional – stress due to any condition in life.
Before starting any therapy, the cause has to be identified. Because
these therapies treat the symptoms as well as the root cause.
For self treatment also first read about the therapy, and get proper
training.

Holistic Medicine is used to:

Heal chronic diseases (including serious chronic

illnesses)
Treat psychological disorders
Successfully treat childhood illnesses
Treat acute illnesses
Normalize weight
Prevent disease
Improve overall health and increase energy level
Transform one's outlook upon life

To be successful apply the therapy faithfully and for some time.

7 of 213.
Kinds of alternate healing
As explained in part one, I have divided the therapies in three broad
groups according to methods used,

1.Only Energy work

Little or no touch therapies , working with energy in and around us.
Control of breath. These are mostly spiritual. These can work from
distance too.
Reiki, Pranic healing, Auras and Chakras all come under this heading.
Learn to Heal 1 covered these.

2.Energy work with body manipulation

These systems believe in energy system too, and have a map of body
with points to stimulate. Light touch, massages, and simple exercises
all are covered here.
These therapies use different kind of tools and materials to help
energy healing.
These are covered in this book.

3.Established Schools of healing

There is another stream of natural herbs, foods, and medicines, for
example Homeopathy, Naturopathy, Ayurved, Chinese Traditional
Medicine (TCM) etc. I will not cover that as those need a long and
dedicated study and are beyond the scope of this study.

Even when you feel fine after trying any of these, do not stop
your regular medication without your Doctor’s instruction.
All these systems supplement and complement, but have not
yet been proved to be able to replace the regular doses.

8 of 213.
Both of the first two kinds do not require any special diet, or
medication.
I have found that these work best for physiological and
psychological disorders rather than for anatomical, Virus and
bacterial infections.
Today almost all systems are getting integrated in the sense that
many of them use terminology and tools specific to some other
therapy. Thus they seem to validate each other.
For example, Reiki and Pranic healing use crystals.
Sujok and reflexology use meridians and similar charts and
massage methods as acupressure.
Aromatherapy oils and magnets are used widely by many
systems.

Modern science seems skeptical about these and you will find as
many negative comments as positive ones.
I will implore that you read about them, and try for yourself. It is
true that not all therapies will work on all. Most of them will
not harm you either as they are non invasive. I have indicated
where you need any precautions.
Also even if you feel it is helping you, DO NOT STOP YOUR
REGULAR MEDICATION.
.

9 of 213.
There are some central beliefs

All these systems recognize some basic concepts:

There is universal energy
There is a presence of something beyond physical body –
soul
The Universal Energy resides in body at various points
known as Chakras and moves around channels known as
meridians.
Universal energy can be used by self or healers to heal.
There are tools and methods to supplement healer.
These tools and methods can also be used for preventive
measures.
These can also be used on animals and inanimate things.

Common sense Cautions

TV, Books, CDs should be used with Prudence and not

indiscriminately.
Do not change the lifestyle drastically suddenly. Any
change should be gradual and comfortable.
Take expert advice regarding nutrition – what is suitable
to your age and physical condition. Of course follow with
common sense.
Apart from walking, any kind of exercises yogic or
otherwise should be taken under a master’s guidance. As
bones can become brittle and not all postures, or
exercises are suitable for all.
Though all of these systems have recorded benefits for
some, they may not all be suitable for all.

Acupressure

It is an ancient Oriental healing therapy based on a perceived network

of 12 meridians (channels) along which energy or vital forces pass
through the body.
The interruption or blockage of the vital force or energy flow results
in the body becoming unwell. This energy is variously known as Qi,
Chi, or Ki. In this therapy pressure is applied to certain points to ease
and balance the Qi.
These meridians and power points can be seen in related
charts. There are more than 600 pressure points. Each
point has a name and place in the chart.
This chart and information about acupressure methods
can be seen in Baba Ramdevji’s book of Yog Sadhana
and Yog Chikitsa Rahasya. As modern yog also use this
method for healing.

The 12 Meridians . The pressure points are charted along these routes.

These points are the basis of various Healing Systems.

12 of 213.
Healing Systems based on these points

Acupuncture is one where needles are used to energize the point.

That is a more complex method, and beyond the scope of this hobby
article.

Acupressure is applying gentle pressure by hand or massaging the

same points. It is more gentle and easier to learn and practice. It is
also called Chinese massage.

Shiatsu is the Japanese version of acupressure massage.

Reflexology and Sujok are kind of systems that believe that all the
important points are located in hands and feet and healing can be done
through them.

Acupressure is effective on many painful conditions from migraine to

sport injuries.

The Commonly Used Techniques

Some of the main techniques that you can use are:

Pressing, kneading, rubbing, pushing, scrubbing, grasping,
patting, rub rolling and wiping.
For self-help use the technique that feels best to you.
You will know the pertinent point by the intensity of pain.
Whatever method is used to massage it should lower the pain to a
tolerable level. If it does not lessen soon, STOP!

13 of 213.
Some Points About Acupressure
Apply massage oil or talcum powder to lubricate and protect
the skin.
Trim your nails.
As a home remedy, every treatment should be gentle. If it feels
very uncomfortable, stop.
Acupressure does not treat severe heart disease, mental
disorders, cancer, or acute infectious diseases.

People with osteoporosis, recent fracture or injury, easy bruising,

bleeding disorders, circulatory problems from diabetes, and those
using anticoagulant medications that "thin" the blood should
avoid acupressure unless under the supervision of a qualified
therapist.

14 of 213.
Do Not

Practice after strenuous exercise.

Practice with a totally empty or full stomach.
Practice if you are extremely weak or right after recovering
from a severe disease.
Practice on open wounds or any skin problems such as
dermatitis, burns, bruises, and scalds
Massage a new injury that shows swelling, or if it is hot to
touch.
Use acupressure on hip area where an artificial joint is fitted.
Massage the abdomen or the lower back of women with menses
or who are pregnant.
Apply pressure to areas of the head in people with epilepsy or
high blood pressure.

15 of 213.
Why Try Acupressure

Mostly acupressure is tried for a specific ailment. Some of the more

common ailments are:
Any kind of nausea and vomiting - pregnancy/ morning
sickness, motion sickness, nausea after surgery, due to
chemotherapy
Cancer-related fatigue
Headache, and other aches and pains
Menstrual cramps
Muscle tension and pain
Constipation and other disorders of the gastrointestinal tract
Arthritis
Anxiety
Depression
Relieve muscular pain or tension, especially neck and back pain
Insomnia
Although more research is needed, studies examining the use of
acupressure for nausea have generally found that it's effective at
relieving nausea. All studies have used a particular point on the inside
of the wrist called P6 for nausea.
There are wrist bands also available to be worn to prevent nausea of
any kind, specially travel related.

16 of 213.
How it works?

Stimulation of active points is thought to lead to increased release of

endorphins.

Endorphin is a natural body painkiller. So endorphin released by

acupressure stimulation may lead to relaxation of Muscles ,
elimination of stress and normalization of body functions.

Preparations
Before treatment begins, the therapist usually performs a general
health assessment.
This involves taking a family medical history and discussing the
physical and emotional health of the person seeking therapy.
Typically, the practitioner also performs a diagnostic examination by
palpating the abdomen or back for any energy imbalances present in
other parts of the body.

Treatment
People usually receive therapy while lying on a massage table or
sitting up. The massage is performed through the clothing—and
disrobing is not necessary.
Pressure is often applied using the thumbs, though various other parts
of the body may be employed, including fingertips, palms, knuckles,
elbows, and knees—some therapists even use their feet.
It typically consists of sustained pressure (lasting up to 10 seconds at a
time), squeezing, and stretching exercises. It may also involve gentle
holding as well as rocking motions. A treatment session lasts
anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes.

17 of 213.
Feeling if it works

When you are not feeling any effects from pressing points, several
things may be the case.
You may not be pressing on the exact right spot (acupuncture points
are about 0.5 mm diameter, so you'll have to be precise). Try different
spots around the location you first tried.
You shouldn't press lightly, but you shouldn't hurt
yourself either. Also, don't press for just a few seconds
(although if you're very sensitive you might already
notice effects then).
Side Effects
After an acupressure session, some people may feel soreness at the
points. People may also feel temporarily lightheaded.

Research and Relevance

Various studies have been done on the effects. A few of them are :
1. Helps ease nausea in most cases - natural or drug induced.
2. Helps Insomnia in seniors ( A study published in Journals of
Gerontology 1999).
3. The use of acupressure in postoperative pain was investigated in a
study published in 1996. Control group of knee surgery patients had
less pain with acupressure.
4. It may benefit stroke victims. The results of at least one study
(which did not include a control group) suggest that it may be useful
during stroke rehabilitation when combined with other treatments.
5. It helps to repair general body imbalances .

Sujok Therapy

Introduction

Sujok is a drug free system using and manipulating energy points like
acupuncture and acupressure. But here the organs and systems of the body
are represented totally in the hands and feet only. It is similar to Reflexology
in concept.
It is developed by Prof. Park Jae Woo, a Korean Scientist, about 35 Years
ago.
"Sujok" is a combination of two words. In Korean 'Su' means
hands and 'Jok' means feet. Thus, SuJok actually means treating
hands and feet.
Sujok Therapy incorporates the best of traditional oriental medicine
practices and terminology. It recognizes energy systems of meridians, and
chakras and has similar as well as different methods to deal with the same.
It is an instant and effective healing therapy without medication and is
absolutely safe and does not have any side effects.
Sujok helps in curing diseases like Arthritis, Bronchitis,
Asthma, Cervical Spondalytis, Backache, Joints pain,
Migraine, Hypertension, Sinusitis, Deafness, Paralysis,
Constipation, Acidity, Obesity, Diabetes, Blood-Pressure,
Menstrual Problems and many more chronic disease related to
different organs of our body.
It is good for curing as well as preventing diseases of physical,
mental and emotional level using Hands and Feet as treatment
areas.

It can be used with any other system of treatment without any ill effects.

SU JOK ACUPUNCTURE works in two dimensions

The first dimension is physical healing system, whereby giving simple

stimulation to the specific corresponding points in hands and feet, cure is
achieved.
The classical 12 main meridians, the 8 extra meridians, and
their attendant points are represented on the hands and feet.
They are known as Byol meridians and Byol points.
This form of treatment applies the theories and experiences of
classical with the new theories of SU JOK ACUPUNCTURE.

The second dimension is at psychic and energy levels.

These two dimensions, when independently practiced are effective in
healing illnesses. However, the combination of two, in accordance with the
situation produces more rapid results.
Apart from the above two, various other dimensions of SU JOK
have been developed by Prof. Park Jae Woo.
These include Homo-Hetero principle, Eight origin theory,
Diamond structure, Chakra system, Onnuri auricular therapy,
Space energy diagnostics, Multi level constitution etc.
http://www.sujoktherapy.com/whatissujok.htm

How Does Sujok Work?

Sujok is a new practice of acupressure and acupuncture treatment, using a

variety of methods to stimulate points only in the hands and feet.
This stimulation of energy points can be done by only fingers,
any rounded and pointed object, seeds or various other tools
and therapies.
Sujok is an integrated therapy, using many tried and trusted methods of other
systems, but on its own body map.

28 of 213.
Seed Therapy, Color Therapy, Crystal Therapy, Magnet
Therapy, Reflex Therapy, Massage Therapy, Nail Therapy,
Finger toe Therapy, Energy Flow Therapy, Six Ki Therapy,
Joint Therapy, Chakra Therapy, Yin / Yang Therapy, Five
Element Therapy, Acupuncture, Acupressure, Moxibustion,
Number Therapy, Mudra Therapy, Smile Meditation, Smile
Yoga, Twist Therapy, Time & Tri Origin Acupuncture etc. are
all used alone or in combination for different problems.

The most important thing is that all these points are located on both hands
and feet so that the entire treatment can be done by locating the points on
just one hand or foot. Also, each organ has more than one point to be
energized.

Instruments
Sujok relies on a number of implements to locate and energize the problem
points.
Probes, Microneedles, MicroMagnets, Bar Magnets, Chakra
Magnets, Micro&Mini Moxa, Rollers, Ring Massagers,
Inserters used for inserting needles, Seeds and many natural
materials are used for this therapy.

Each magnet has a north and a south polarity. The
north pole is white, the south pole yellow.
With magnets it is possible to change the flow of
energy locally as well as in the meridians.
When the direction of the field lines of the magnet is
in tune with the energy flow, it produces a toning
effect, the opposing direction produces a sedative
effect

Moxa
Moxibustion or burning of Moxa is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy.
Moxa, or mugwort is an herb. It has an important role in the traditional
medical systems of China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Tibet, and Mongolia.
The mugwort is usually dries and ground into fluff. It is then processed
further into mini or medium sized sticks.
It can be used by burning on a stand, with acupuncture needles, or
sometimes burning straight on a patient's skin. It is heat therapy.

Moxa is a specific treatment with heat on neuro physiological points,

particularly with chronic diseases and severe pain.

34 of 213.
Methods

Sujok- is a complete method of applying pressure or massaging the points

on feet and palms by needles or other things. It cures diseases without any
medicines and without any harmful side effects.
It doesn't require huge financial expenses or special medical
knowledge, profound skills and intricate devices. Anyone can
use it at any age with complete health benefits.

Any illness or problem in the body can be diagnosed by finding points and
zones of high sensitivity in hands and feet.
By pressing or stimulating these points an impulse goes to area of illness to
heal it.
Each finger on a hand and foot is similar to whole body.
The finger has 3 parts - phalanxes. The body also has three main parts
(without extremities) - head, chest and stomach. These parts are neatly
separated from each other on the body and on the finger. They correspond to
each other.

35 of 213.
Diagnosis

With probe (or anything with a rounded end, like a ball point pen) press on
various points on the designated zone of organs on a palm. Initially many
points seem painful .At some points you will feel intolerable pain. That is
the trouble point you have to energize.

Treatment

Stick massage.
A diagnostic stick with which pressure could be applied is used . A
matchstick, toothpick or ball pen may also be used but they should be not
sharp. The point is massaged by rotating the stick clockwise and
anticlockwise till the pain disappears. If the point could be correctly and
perfectly identified then we can massage 2-3 minutes after every 3 hours till
cured.

Rollers, balls and ring

With a massage roller , massage balls or rings many points can be dealt
together.
In elastic ring massage the ring is placed on the finger, or ball held in the
palm. Massage by moving them till the area becomes warm and red .This
procedure is done in few hours gap within 24 hours time.

Magnet method.
The magnet should be arranged on the most painful point with sticky tape.
The magnet has southern and northern poles. If your condition becomes
worse, change the orientation of the magnet to opposite side.

36 of 213.
Energy of seeds
We know about the force of sprouting seeds. It can push itself up through
solid ground.
This latent natural energy is used in therapy. The seeds are pasted by a
sticking plaster on required point. They are changed every 24 hours.
Different seeds are used for different afflictions.
The seed therapy is very effective against chronic diseases and certain pains,
especially in joint pains .The seeds could be either placed singly over the
effected area or may cover to the entire painful portion.

Applying Heat
Heat application or fomentation is traditional treatment for many pains.
Sujok also applies heat through Moxa sticks.

Using Color
Diseases connected with external manifestations may be healed by color
therapy. Treatment by color has a good effect to heal skin diseases.

If malady appears only by reddening without swelling and pain,

it should be treated by black color.
If illness is accompanied by swelling, itch, weak passing pains,
treat by green or dark blue colors.
If complaint is with significant but not constant pains and event
of erosion, treat with red and yellow colors.
If illness is accompanied by constant pains, or the appearance
of ulcers, and the affected area gets a gray-black color, treat by
yellow and red colors.
To apply color therapy it is necessary to paint points of
conformity by a marker of definite color.

37 of 213.
Outcome

High effectiveness.
You may observe the effect in few minutes or even seconds.

Complete Safety
Wrong application never harms the person-it is just not effective. The
Method is Universal. With Sujok, it is possible to treat any part of a body,
any organ, any joint, and any illness.

Simple application.
Your palms and feet, your knowledge is always with you. It is easy to
remember major points and follow the shape of body.
The special tools developed for Sujok therapy are usually used,
but if you do not have them, it is possible to stimulate bio active
points with the help of a toothpick or a match stick.

Permanent recovery
Treatment success is almost permanent if the practitioner completes full
course of treatment and patient brings about changes in life style (exercises,
yoga, meditation, etc. ) and food regulation.

No extra precautions needed

There is no need for any precautions to be taken during the treatment. Since
the therapy is most natural and curing only the natural forces in and around
the body it is one of the safest therapies. For faster cure and better results,
diet change of life style and treatment schedule it followed perfectly as
achieved by treating physicians.

Aromatherapy

Introduction

We are all aware of Smells, both good - aromas and fragrances and
bad – stenches and stinks. Smells act powerfully on the memory area
of the brain. They evoke memories of things, people or places and
remind us of related emotions.

Smells are tiny molecules of liquid that float through the air.
When inhaled, these molecules are absorbed in the blood and
taken to the limbic system.
Limbic system is the olfactory area of the brain and deals with a
person's basic drives like hunger, thirst, memories, intuition,
sleep, emotion and the like.

Smells have been used in our lives to enhance our awareness. In

devotional places there are incense sticks used to calm mind
and aid meditation. Various fragrances were used for sensual
pleasures and enhancing beauty.
Smell of mangoes, spices makes mouth water. Smell of
disinfectants remind us of hospitals or Doctors.

Aromatherapy has taken this concept to a logical inference and claim

that we can control memories and emotions by using particular
aromas. Experiments are being conducted for Alzheimer and
Depression alleviation.

46 of 213.
Aromatherapy is the art of using special aromatic “Essential” oils and
other fragrances for healing purposes. It is one of the fastest growing
Alternate holistic therapies.

It is used for the pain relief, skin care, easing of tension and
weariness and revitalizing the entire body.

Aromatherapy is gaining general acceptance. . In Japan, aroma

systems are being incorporating into new buildings. In one such
treatment, the scent of lavender and rosemary is diffused in the
customer area to soothe waiting customers, while the perfumes
from lemon and eucalyptus are used in the bank teller counters
to keep the staff alert.

History

Aromatherapy had been around for nearly 6000 years. The Greeks,
Romans, Indians, Chinese and ancient Egyptians all used fragrances
and fragrant oils. They were used more for beauty and personal care
than for medicinal purposes.
The Egyptians used fragrant oils for embalming their dead
nearly 6000 years ago. Hippocrates, the father of modern
medicine, used aromatic fumigations to rid Athens of the
plague.
There is a French Connection to the modern avatar of aromatherapy.
In 1930 French chemist Rene Maurice Gattefosse invented the term
aromatherapy for the curative use of essential oils. He was fascinated
by the benefits of lavender oil which healed his burned hand without
scars. He started investigating the effect of other essential oils for
healing and other benefits.
During world war II, the French army surgeon Dr. Jean Valnet
used essential oils as antiseptics. Later, Madame Marguerite
Maury started prescribing essential oils as remedy for her
patients- by massage or by inhalation.

What are essential oils

Essential oils are distilled from plants. They are the most potent
concentrated essence of different parts of the plant- flowers, fruits,
leaves, spices, roots, and bark.
They are chemically complex, vary fragrant and volatile matter.
Volatile means they evaporate very fast. These three qualities –
complexity, fragrance and volatility differ from plant to plant
and even from part to part of the same plant.
Though it is a specific product, the term “Essential Oils” loosely
covers all kinds of aromatic products.
For extraction some knowledge of Chemistry and its methods is
needed. Steam distillation, Solvent extraction and cold expression are
some of the methods used for drawing out the essences.
All these oils are complex compounds. Hydrogen, Carbon and
Oxygen are their basic building blocks.
There are about 150 essential oils. There are now synthetic ones also
available as there is no standardization yet in the field.

Uses for Essential oils

Essential oils are used in a variety of ways :

Anti-viral, antiseptic, bactericidal - lemon, pine,

frankincense, peppermint, sandalwood.

Fungicidal, sedating, and very aromatically pleasing -

Clary sage, lavender.

Sedating and antiseptic - lemongrass, cirtronella, .

Ease congestion, aid flow of mucus, can be toxic - fennel,

hyssop, sage, eucalyptus.

Anti anxiety- rosewood, geranium, rose, lavender.

Bactericidal and strongly stimulating, can be highly

irritating to the skin- clove, thyme, oregano, cinnamon.

Expectorant and bactericidal – rosemary, ginger

Anti-inflammatory- clove, cinnamon, sage, eucalyptus,

black cumin and bay leaf.

Antispasmodic - catnip, lavender and New Zealand tea

tree oils.

Essential Oils are Different from other vegetable Oils

Essential oils and fatty/vegetable oils are two completely different

types of oils.
The main verifiable difference is that the essential oils are
volatile -they evaporate quickly when exposed to air.
They are used for medicinal or healing purposes and are not always
edible. They should not be used indiscriminately as they can actually
be toxic. Vegetable oils are always edible.
Essential oils are soluble in fatty/vegetable oils. Hence, in
Aromatherapy, fatty/vegetable oils are called carrier oils. Very
strong and potent Essential oils are diluted with these carrier
oils to make them safe for use. Main carrier oils are sunflower,
almond, and jojoba.
Carrier oils are nourishing and easily absorbed by the skin by
massage. When mixed with essential oils they carry the healing effect
gently.
Essential oils can be mixed with other essential or career oils for
specific purposes. Many recipes are available for various ailments.

How it works

Aromatherapy works when essential oils enter the body by absorption

and inhalation through the pores of the skin. The oil can be inhaled or
massaged at different points of body.

Once diluted essential oil is applied directly to the skin it is

completely absorbed and penetrates deeply into the tissues, interstitial
fluid and bloodstream reaching the targeted part.

Different oils have varying rates of absorption, between 20 and 120

minutes.

There are three Modes of application

Direct inhalation:
For respiratory decongestion, expectoration as well as psychological
effects
Aerial diffusion:
For environmental fragrance or aerial disinfection
Direct application on skin :
General massage, baths, compresses, therapeutic skin care.

Inhalation
Simply inhaling an essential ensures immediate mental response and
helps quick absorption in the bloodstream.
The olfactory membrane is the only place in the human body where
the central nervous system is in direct contact with the environment.

52 of 213.
When an olfactory cell is stimulated, an impulse travels along the
olfactory nerve to the brain where memory, hunger, sexual response
or emotion is evoked.

The Two methods of inhalation are:

simple inhalation,
diffusion

Inhalation
1. Simple inhalation. Open the bottle, keep it 6-8 inches under your
nose and blow the aroma towards your nose with your other hand. Do
not touch or breathe directly on the opening of the bottle.

2. Place a drop of undiluted oil in your hand. Rub hands together and
cup them over your nose. Take a deep breathe and check out your
response. If you feel relaxed and content, repeat.

3. Steam inhalation. Mix few drops of essential oil in boiling water

and inhale the fragrance with the steam. Works well with stuffed
noses, coughs and colds.

4. Add five drops of an essential oil to a hanky or tissue and carry

with you throughout the day. Or place under your pillow case to ease
you into sleep.

Diffusion
This is when essential oils are dispersed in the air to be inhaled. It is
also used for anti fungal and anti bacterial activities.
Diffusion is done by special devices called diffusers. There are several
kinds. Basically these are some kind of containers where oil is placed
and it is dispersed in the air by candle or electric heat , or fan to
vaporize it.

53 of 213.
They are very pretty and make ideal room decorations. They are also
good gifts.
Today Aromatherapy Diffusers are multi purpose machines and can
be used as Humidifier, Atomizer, or Air purifier.
Caution : Keep all types of diffusers out of the reach of children and
pets!

Diffusion With Items Already in Your Household

Simple Tissue Diffusion
Place 3-4 drops of essential oil on a tissue or cotton ball. Keep in an
open container. Slowly aroma fills the room.
Steam Diffusion
Boil 2 cups of water. Pour the water into a bowl and add up to 10
drops of oil to the water. The steam will heat the oils and cause them
to evaporate quickly into the room.
Candle Diffusion
Light a candle and let it burn for about 5 minutes. Stub the flame.
Place 1 drop of essential oil in the melted wax (not on the wick!) and
then relight the candle.
Caution: Essential oils are flammable, so great care must be used.
The aroma is not long-lasting. The heat may alter or destroy certain
components of the oils so the therapeutic benefit may not be very
good.

Diffusers and Diffusion Products

The general descriptions below are about the different products that
are available. Many companies are making them.
Always check the specifications, requirements and safety comments
supplied with the particular product

Clay Pot Diffusers

Clay pots are small terra-cotta pots. A clay pot diffuser has an
opening for adding essential oils. All you do is add essential oils to the
diffuser and let the essential oils evaporate and diffuse naturally into
the space around you.

www.stressdynamics.com/browseproducts/

The intensity of the aroma depends on the amount of essential oil in

the clay pot.
Clay pot diffusers are inexpensive, easy to use, and do not require
electricity or batteries.

55 of 213.
Atomizers
Atomizers use a small pump and specialized glass to disperse the
aroma in the air in a fine mist. This works very fast.

http://www.pacwestserv.com/aura_cacia_aromatherapy_atomizer.jpg
These units should be used for only 7 -10 minutes at a time or with a
measured amount of essential oils.

Tea Light Diffusers

Many people use these in the beginning. They are made of many
materials, clay, ceramic, glass, soapstone, metals.

56 of 213.
They have a bowl on top and a place for the candle under it.
Add water to the bowl, and several drops of essential oil. Light the
candle and you will soon have diffusion into the air.
The tea light candle usually lasts about 2-3 hours.

Caution - - Never leave a lit candle

unattended, and never allow the
diffuser to burn dry. This will result
in the glass cracking and creates a
potential fire hazard. If the bowl
should go completely dry, DO NOT
put more water or oils in until it has
completely cooled.

Fan Diffusers

These use a fan to diffuse the oils through cool air evaporation.
Essential oils are placed onto a disposable absorbent pad or into a
tray.

57 of 213.
http://www.dreamingearth.com/uploads/FanFuser200.jpg
The pad or tray is placed into the unit and then powered on. The fan
then blows air across this pad or tray and carries the aroma throughout
the room.

Electric Heat Diffusers

Similar to a fan diffuser, heat diffusers use heat and a fan to gently
heat the oil and disperse the aroma into a room.
These work on the similar principle as for anti mosquito mat
machines.

http://www.luminessentcandles.com/images/products/aromatherapy_s
cent_ball_diffuser.jpg

58 of 213.
Nebulizers

A nebulizer is an ingenious device that breaks essential oils into

separate molecules before diffusion. These tiny molecules are more
readily absorbed by the lungs and thus have greater therapeutic value.

http://www.americanaromatherapy.com/Graphics/Aroma-
Pro%20Essential%20Oil%20Diffuser%20Nebulizer%20250%20Blac
k%20GREEN.jpg

A nebulizer is a gadget that consists of two main parts: the plastic

base that contains the motor and a very unusual, clear blown-glass
looking device that holds and "nebulizes" the oils. Instead of the use
of the unusual glass piece, some nebulizers use a special bottle that
looks like a Boston round bottle.

59 of 213.
Notes

When you use a diffuser for extended periods of time,

you get used to the aroma and may not notice it. Try to
move out and come back after some time and you will
feel it again.

Remember little is more and do not use oils excessively.

If at any time while using an essential oil should you
develop nausea, vomiting, headache or other ill feeling -
you might have over done it. Just get some fresh air for a
while and remember not to use so much the next time.

Do not use diffusion for extended periods. best results are

obtained if the diffusion is for a few minutes every few
hours.

For safety reasons we recommend that you do not using a

heat source diffuser around pet, children, or the elderly.

60 of 213.
Aromatherapy through Skin Application

The aromatherapy oil is applied directly to the skin through ointments,

lotions, and creams.
Using massage and compresses the oils are absorbed in the skin
through the blood stream. The time of absorption could be between 20
to 70 minutes.
Places of direct application are: reflex zones, pulse points, Chakras
and the whole body.

Reflex Zones
Reflex zones are areas on the skin that connect particular parts of the
physical body to organs and emotions.

They have similar theories as reflexology , Sujok and Acupressure

regarding pressure points.

61 of 213.
Pulse Points
Pulse points are found where a major artery runs close to the surface
of the skin. They literally mean the point where the pulse can be
checked!
Wrists or behind the ear are two main points. You may either apply
single oil, like lavender or sandalwood, or a unique blend of your own

Chakras
Charkas are the spinning vortexes of energy that take in and emit
energy. The mental, spiritual and emotional systems of the body are
said to be in balance when all the 7 chakras spin evenly.

http://www.rickrichards.com/chakras/chakra_girl4.JPG

Essential oils like harmony and sandalwood open the chakras. Heart
responds well to the Rose oil whereas the solar plexus respond to the
Juniper oil.

Techniques of applications

Massage:
This is the most used technique. For massage, essential oils are mixed
with a vegetable carrier oil, usually wheat germ, avocado, olive,
safflower, grape seed, or Soya bean oil. A ratio that is commonly
recommended is 2.5–5% essential oil to 95–97.5% carrier oil.

It improves health by acting directly on the bodies muscular, nervous,

circulatory, immune systems and Chakras.

Massage therapy is aimed to:

Develop and maintain your physical function
Relax tense muscles.
Relieve or prevent physical dysfunction and pain
Improve circulation and immune system functionality.
Reduce stress.
Relax the mind

63 of 213.
Improve blood flow
Increase overall feeling of well-being

After the massage drink lots of water - This helps the body flush the
toxins that were released during the massage.

Full-body baths:
The essential oil is added to a tubful of warm (but not hot) water . The
dosage of essential oil is usually 5–10 drops per bath.
There are recipes for making your personalized soap, body lotion,
shampoo and conditioners.

Hand or foot baths:

These are used to treat arthritis or skin disorders of the hands or feet
as well as sore muscles. The hands or feet are soaked for 10–15
minutes in a basin of warm water to which 5–7 drops of essential oil
have been added.

http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/how-to-use-aromatherapy-
4.jpg

64 of 213.
Compresses
Aromatherapy compresses are used to treat wounds, sprains, bruises,
sore muscles, menstrual cramps, and respiratory congestion.
Both hot and cold compresses are effective at relieving pain and
swelling, and reducing inflammation. Hot compresses are used
to treat painful joints from arthritis to chronic backache to
toothache and earache.
These are made by soaking four or five layers of cotton cloth in a
solution of water and essential oil or bath salts. Hot water is used for
hot compress and cold water for cold compress. Wring out the cloth
so that it is moist but not wet, and apply to the affected part of the
body. The compress is then covered with a layer of plastic wrap,
followed by a pre-warmed towel, and kept in place for one or two
hours.
A hot compress improves the circulation, cleanses your body
and opens the body pores. It will also provide relief to muscles
and neck.
Cold compress helps in relieving itching, inflammation, and
swelling of the body.

Oils to use:

Though there are more than 100 essential oils available today, the
following oils are used most frequently for making aromatherapy
compresses:

• Eucalyptus: helps in sunburn, muscular cramps and headaches

• Ginger: good for muscle pain and cold
• Chamomile: effective for sunburn, cramps, headaches and rashes
• Lavender: treats anxiety, bruises, migraine, burns and rashes

65 of 213.
Aromatic salves:
Salves are made by melting together 1 1/4 cup of vegetable oil and 1
oz of beeswax in a double boiler over medium heat, and adding the
desired combination of essential oils.

Internal use:
Though it is not a usual practice to take these oils internally, some
essential oils such as oil of peppermint and cinnamon can be used to
make teas or mouthwashes, or mixed with a glass of honey and water.
The dose depends on the oil, but a physician, naturopathist, or other
practitioner should be consulted.

Other Benefits
Essential oils are used in other applications too. They can be used in
household and laundry cleaners. Some oils act as a natural insect
repellent and pesticide. Citronella candles during the summer keep
mosquitoes away. Add five drops to a cotton ball and place in drawers
and linen closets to keep away insects.

Preparation of Recipes

Always use fresh oils and oil mixtures for best results.
Both essential oils and vegetable carrier oils deteriorate over time and
should not be kept longer than one or two months. Thus, it is best to
mix only small quantities of massage oils or salves at any one time.

Aftercare

Apart from some rest after a massage no particular aftercare is needed.

You should drink plenty of water after massages to flush out the
toxins released in the body.

66 of 213.
Aromatherapy should normally bring in a sense of relaxation, relief
from stress, and improved well-being.
But in certain cases it can also result in skin irritations or some
allergic reactions to essential oils. In such cases the treatment should
be stopped immediately. Traumatic memories may be triggered
associated with specific smells.

Care of Essential Oils:

Essential oils can last up to seven years with proper care.
Keep them out of the sun and tightly secured.
Store in a cool dry place.

Selection And Purchase

Undiluted essential oils for aromatherapy are termed therapeutic

grade. But so far there is no standardization or regulation for them.
Hence there are many devious characters who mix synthetic
chemicals and sell them as essential oils. If you are going in for a long
stint, it is better to educate your nose to recognize the difference. Or
go through reputed and established concerns.

Price
Oils fluctuate in price based on the amount of the harvest, the country
of origin, the type of extraction used (steam distillation, CO2 extract),
and popularity. Indian Sandalwood is more desired than Australian
Sandalwood ,based upon the aroma, and is twice as costly. Organic
and wild harvested essential oils also tend to be more expensive.

67 of 213.
Many times oils are extracted, by whatever form, then repressed or
thinned with a carrier of alcohol or some such matter. This lowers the
quality of the healing properties of the oils as well as the price.

Facts on Healing Ailments with Aromatherapy

While aromatherapy is not a miracle cure for serious emotional issues,
the use of essential oils can assist with individual emotional issues.
All oils do not provide the same advantage to all people.
Past memories linked with particular aromas have a positive or
negative effect. Choose fragrances that you distinctly like.
Medical researchers expect it could cure memory disorders and
Alzheimer's disease someday. It is seen that aromatherapy oils
are very strong and influence our basic emotions, hormonal
balances and even our survival mechanisms by affecting
various areas of our brain.

This is not a substitute for regular healing

methods but a compliment to them.

68 of 213.
Safety concerns

Remember that essential oils are really chemicals natural or otherwise

and they can cause reactions in some people. Take normal
commonsense precautions to be safe.

Safety tips

Read about an essential oil before applying it.

Never take essential oils internally.
Essential oils are highly concentrated substances and
should be diluted with carrier oils before applying them
to the skin. Follow recipes for applications.
Have a recipe diluted further when using with children.
Do not use with infants.
Do not apply citrus essential oils, especially Bergamot
before direct exposure to the sun. These essential oils
increase photosensitivity.
Essential oils are not soluble in water. Make sure you
dilute or fully disperse them when using water as a base.
Essential oils can cause a prickly, irritating sensation to
the skin. Do not rub water on the area. This will cause
the oil and irritation to spread. Apply any vegetable/
carrier oil to the area instead. This will absorb the
essential oil and ease the irritation instantly.
Keep essential oils away from your eyes.
Keep essential oils out of the reach of children and
animals.
If skin irritation occurs or an allergic reaction occurs with
any essential oil or product with essential oils in it,
discontinue.

69 of 213.
Essential oils should not replace proper health care. If
you are under medical supervision consult with your
healthcare provider before using essential oils.
While using candles for diffusion , keep in a steady place
and away from children, pets and elderly.
When using new oil for the first time, do a skin patch test
on a small area of skin. Place a small amount of the
diluted essential oil on the inside of elbow and apply a
bandage. Wait 24 hours for any form of reaction. Even if
a particular essential oil is not known to cause irritation,
do the test. The reaction of oils can differ from person to
person.
Use the smallest amount of essential oils that will get the
job done. If one drop will get the job done, don't use two
drops.
Some essential oils should be avoided during pregnancy
or by those with asthma, epilepsy, or with other health
conditions.
Not all essential oils are suitable for use in aromatherapy.
Wormood, pennyroyal, onion, camphor, horseradish,
wintergreen, rue, bitter almond and sassafras are some of
the essential oils that should only be used by qualified
aromatherapy practitioners.
Keep children away from essential oils. Many essential
oils such as citrus oils can smell like they are safe to
drink- they are NOT. Treat the oils like toxic medicines.
Essential oils are flammable. Keep them out of the way
of fire hazards.

Results of Clinical Studies for problems
resolved by Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is particularly effective for stress, anxiety, and

psychosomatic induced problems, muscular and rheumatic pains,
digestive disorders and women's problems, such as PMS, menopausal
complaints and postnatal depression.
Here is a summary of the results from clinical studies:

Aromatherapy for Behavior

Significant evidence exists that fragrant compounds and aromatherapy
have a profound effect on our mind and behavior. Animal studies have
found that hyper excited mice (after consuming a large quantity of
caffeine) were calmed by the aroma of lavender, sandalwood, and
other oils sprayed into their cages.
The same mice were found to become very irritable when exposed to
the aroma of orange terpines, thymol, and some other substances.
These oils were all detected in their bloodstream after about an hour.

Aromatherapy for Sleep

In a study reported in the British Medical Journal Lancet, elderly
patients slept "like babies" when a lavender aroma was wafted into
their bedrooms at night. These patients had complained of difficulty
falling asleep and had to take sleeping pills to get sleep prior to the
aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy for Postpartum discomfort

In a double blind study, 635 women applied lavender oil to their
perineal area (part of the body between the vagina and the rectum)
after child birth. The women reported a distinct improvement between
the third and fifth day. (The discomfort is the worst during this time
for patients in the control group.)

71 of 213.
Aromatherapy for Colds
It has been well established that chicken soup is good for cold (both
historically and scientifically). Studies were conducted to find out
whether the effect was due to the action of the hot steam on the lining
of the nostrils or whether the aroma of the chicken soup has anything
to do with it. The results indicated that chicken soup was more
effective than the steam indicating the effectiveness of the aroma.

Aromatherapy for Stress

In a study conducted at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital in
New York, patients undergoing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
reported 63 percent less claustrophobic after getting exposed to the
aroma of vanilla. There was no change in their heart rate. Obviously,
the aroma reduced their anxiety probably by the pleasant memories
evoked by the vanilla aroma or by some other physiological response.
In another study, 122 patients who were in an intensive care unit,
reported feeling much better when aromatherapy was administered
with the oil of lavender (compared to when they were simply given a
massage or allowed to rest.) No changes in the patients who were
given aromatherapy were observed in the blood pressure, respiration,
or heart rate. Japanese have reported fewer mistakes by keypunch
operators when exposed to fragrance.

Aromatherapy and Male Sexual Response

Circulation to the male sexual organ was found to have improved
substantially by treatment with licorice or lavender with pumpkin pie.
Doughnut with black licorice was also very effective. Men who are
considered the most sexually active responded well to lavender, cola,
and oriental spice; older males preferred the fragrance of vanilla.
These studies prove that aromatherapy is an effective therapy for the
treatment of male impotence from the blood vessel disease or from
psychogenic factors.

Aromatherapy certification

If you are planning to become an aroma therapist, a number of schools

offer aromatherapy certification. Before you choose a school though,
it's essential to understand what is meant by "certification."
There is no standardized certification for aromatherapy in the USA. A
practitioner who has aromatherapy certification has completed a
course of study that granted him a certificate of completion. Since
there's no standardized curriculum either, there's no way to know what
this "certification" means.
This lack of standardization is a problem for professionals. Because
there is no core knowledge, it's difficult do the research necessary to
build a body of knowledge for aromatherapy.
The lack of standardization is a problem for the public, too, because
they have no way to evaluate what aromatherapists do. With no
standardized curriculum, and no core body of knowledge, anybody
with a scented candle can claim to be an aromatherapist.
Unfortunately, that's usually what happens.
If you decide to pursue aromatherapy as a career, compare and
evaluate several schools that offer aromatherapy certification.
Compare their curricula against the standards approved by the
National Association of Holistic Aromatherapists. Make sure you
understand what your state laws allow or prohibit.

73 of 213.
Aromatherapy Certification Curriculum should include the following :

Introduction to Aromatherapy
Anatomy and Physiology
Aroma-Chemistry and Botany
Distilling and other methods for extraction of oils
Knowledge about oils and their properties
Blending Techniques
Pressure Points and Body Systems
Scent Therapy
Safety Procedures
It is getting increasingly popular even in normal medicinal
practices to use some kind of aroma to calm or de – stress
patients.

Music Therapy

Introduction

Music therapy uses music as the tool for communication, education,

transformation and healing.
It is based in the idea that music can be enjoyed by anyone
regardless of age, sex, or sickness. Language is not a barrier.
It has been successfully used on children and adults for a
variety of problems.

Music Therapy has two modes of presentation.

Passive mode – entails listening. It is favorable to almost all forms of

ailments and conditions. Most therapy in India is of this kind.

Active mode - entails participating. It is of immense help in neurological

problems. It is a western concept where more patient participation is
required.

Here I am describing the western process first. I have given the Indian
concept later.

80 of 213.
Music therapy methods include:

 Playing musical
instruments
 Listening
 Singing
 Vocal improvisation
 Songs writing
 Movements with music
(Dance)

People do not need advance musical skills, they can benefit from music
therapy regardless of their background, age or ability.

The sensors in our brain which recognize and enjoy music always stay
active and are not affected by the level of disability.

81 of 213.
How Music Therapy works

The following are some of effects of music:

Brain Waves: Research has proved that music can intensify

brainwaves to vibrate with the beat. Faster beats bring sharper
concentration and more alert thinking, and a slower tempo promotes
calm, meditative state. This change in brainwave activity levels is
longer lasting. This results enduring benefits to your state of mind, even
after music is stopped.

Breathing and Heart Rate: An alteration in brainwaves

affects other bodily functions. This can produce slower breathing,
slower heart rate, and a start of the relaxation response. This is why it
helps counteract the damaging effects of chronic stress.

State of Mind: Music can bring about a more positive state of

mind, curbing depression and anxiety and in many cases letting a
person forget the intensity of pain.

Other Benefits: there are many other benefits of music, such

as lowering blood pressure, boost immunity, ease muscle tension, and
provide pain relief.

Remember everyone has different tastes in music. Listen to the

music that you feel comfortable. Sitting down and forcing yourself to
listen to relaxation music that you don't like may create stress, not
alleviate it.

Music is used as background for other healing activities which

enhances their effect also.

History of Music Therapy

Actually music therapy is much older and has been reinvented in modern
times. Sound waves are known to affect people and environment.
All religions use music to calm and de – stress. Many tribal
cultures used music as a part of their ceremonies, to worship,
and to help with illnesses. It can be safely said that the music
itself was the motivating factor in helping people achieve
positive results.
The Indian music recognizes that music should be different according to
time and season. We have different ragas for morning and evening, and
for different seasons. Different Ragas have been known to affect moods.
There is supposed to be a manuscript named Raga Chikistsa in
the collections of Saraswati Mahal Library in Tanjore which
deals with the various ragas that can be used for curing various
ailments.
Modern history of music therapy began in the late 1800s. Music was used
in the post World War I to augment treatment of traumatic injuries. By
playing music, patients seemed to heal faster – both emotionally and
physically. That really paved the way for new research and education.
Creative Music Therapy was established by the composer and
pianist Paul Nordoff and Clive Robbins, an educator, in the
1960s.
College and university programs were created to teach music therapy.
The American Music Therapy Association was developed. Now many
academic publications are available for professionals.

Music therapy is used in conjunction with physical as mental and

psychological therapy. In addition, nursing homes, hospice centers, and
rehabilitation facilities all find that music therapy can work in
conjunction with other planned activities.

Music Therapy Activity and the Elderly

Music Therapy is also known as sound healing, harmonic therapy,

harmonic healing, and song therapy.

The power of music is evident in the improvement of seniors with

diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Stroke and other degenerative
brain diseases.
We can’t explain why, but people with problems of memory,
speech, balance and walking, appear to gain their abilities in
singing and dancing.

Elderly patients with chronic pain, cancer, hearing impairment, who have
recently gone through a surgery or have lost a loved one also benefit
greatly from music therapy.
Sing-a-long is the most popular activity used in western senior
programs and senior residential services. It stimulates their
brains and they remember not only the songs of their youth, but
also memories of people and events associated with the songs.

Music therapy activity is beneficial for the general geriatric healthcare

too. Social singing like antakshari can greatly improve the social habits
and wellbeing of general geriatric patients

Though this is not so much common in India, dancing can bring out the
liveliness in elderly people, and this will greatly improve their mood and
overall happiness.

85 of 213.
Some Music Therapy Activities

Though music therapy consists of music, the therapy covers a much

larger definition and techniques.
Playing instruments, writing lyrics, listening to music, singing
solo or in group, Antakshari, and even dance, music therapy
activities can be custom fit to the patient they are meant to
help.

Using song lyrics is one of the more common music therapy activities in
rehabilitative and counseling sessions. You are encouraged to write
lyrics about difficult things in your life. It might make you able to see
connections and solutions to your own problems.

You might like to share a song, letting the music and lyric
express your feelings.

You might be asked to listen to some music and to explain what

it means to you.

Dancing to music is another way to work through a number of problems.

In the physical therapy setting, dancing and moving to the music are
activities that boost strength, balance as well as moods.

Soft music playing in the background of a therapeutic session is

one of the more positive and practical music therapy activities.

86 of 213.
Music Therapy Assessment and Treatment

The therapist creates a therapy program tailored to a specific patient after

evaluating the problems and needs.

Music therapists create completely unique treatment plans for

each patient to address specific, distinctive traits, symptoms,
and needs.
There are many treatment methods for each illness and ailment. That is
why a qualification in music therapy is desirable. The more experience a
music therapist has with Autism, for example, the better he or she can
treat the many different types of Autism that affect the population.

The therapists take active part in interdisciplinary treatment planning,

ongoing evaluation, and follow up.

Qualifications

In western countries there are accredited courses. India is just beginning

to realize the need for a structured course. Some private individuals and
institutes have started a few courses. I have given the link at the end.
A music therapy degree is a multi-layered study. You have to
learn about different kinds of music, how to use singing,
writing lyrics, and dancing as part of therapy.
You must love music and people equally and have a sense of calm. You
have to work at the pace of the patient and be ready to change the
program if needed.
Opportunities for music therapists include private and group practice as
well as nursing homes and rehabilitation services.

Music Improves These Conditions

Dementia/Alzheimer’s Disease

By some coincidence, the area of the brain that is responsible for

remembering music is one of the last areas that affected by Alzheimer’s
disease and advanced forms of dementia.
Hence there is this amazing fact. People, who cannot remember
loved ones, life long friends, or their place of birth, can sing old
songs!

According to the National Institute on Aging at the National Institutes of

Health (USA), dementia causes changes in the brain. Common symptoms
of dementia are repeating questions, become lost in familiar places,
having trouble following directions, and becoming disoriented about the
time, people, and places. Sometimes people who are experiencing
dementia forget to take care of their daily living activities, such as
bathing, brushing their teeth, and eating. Alzheimer’s disease is a specific
type of dementia.
The use of music therapy in the treatment and rehabilitation of
adults with dementia and/or Alzheimer’s disease (AD) has
shown promising results.

Music therapy for patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease causes
improvements in mood, memories and quality of life, and reductions in
anxiety. It is useful for decreasing agitation and wandering in individuals
with more advanced dementia and AD.
Additionally, music therapy interventions can benefit caregivers
in terms of increasing socialization, decreasing depression and
sense of burden.

Stroke/Parkinson’s Disease and Physical Rehabilitation

Researchers at the Center for Biomedical Research in Music have noted

the benefits of music, specifically rhythm, on gait in Parkinson’s disease
and stroke patients with amazing results.
Gait training involves assisting patients relearning how to walk
evenly, walking longer distances, and become stronger
physically. This helps in reducing injuries from falls leading to
more independence and a better quality of life.
Additionally, music therapy is useful in speech rehabilitation. Stroke
patients have been able to relearn how to speak by singing useful phrases
before they speak them.
Singing has also been useful in helping Parkinson’s patients speak more
clearly as their disease advances.
Stroke patients also benefit from “Melodic Intonation Therapy” to relearn
useful phrases, which helps these patients state their needs and
wishes. This particular treatment is most successful for individuals with
aphasia.
Aphasia is the condition in which the power to communicate by
writing, speaking, or using signs is lost.

Cancer
Music therapy cancer treatments are very helpful to a wide variety of
patients who suffer from a large range of cancers.
Though music therapy cancer treatments does not actually affect the
disease itself –tumor will not show any physical signs of improvement –
the treatments and therapies positively affect the mood of the patient, and
can make all the difference in the way the patient deals with and feels
about the disease.
The American Cancer Society has published several articles about the
benefits of music therapy cancer treatments.
One from 2004 discusses research done on cancer patients who
had also received music therapy. Most patients were under
typical cancer treatments like autologous stem cell transplant

89 of 213.
and high-dose chemotherapy. These treatments are very harsh
on the patient, causing anorexia, fevers, and fatigue. Even more
than these are the emotional problems. These symptoms were
best helped by the music therapy cancer treatments.
Most patients in this study received music therapy in the form
of live music played by a trained music therapist. The results in
this particular study were fascinating. Patients reported a great
improvement in mood.
Because of these positive results music therapy is now offered in many
hospitals.

Epilepsy
Research suggests that listening to Mozart´s piano sonata K448 can
reduce the number of seizures in people with epilepsy. This has been
called the "Mozart effect".
It is not really proved conclusively yet.

Theory of Indian Music

Ancient healing roots of Indian Music are in Nada ( naad) yoga, Vedic
Chanting and Raga System. Their influence has been recognized by
various medical professionals, psychologists, musicologists and music
therapists.

Indian tradition has great reverence about the power of sound.

Sound is first of the basic five elements that construct the
universe.

We have earliest mention of sound techniques in Vedas. Samveda is the

earliest known work about harmonizing rhythms, songs and tunes. That is
the basis of the seven notes that are the foundation of all music.

Purity of modulation is essential for the science of sound.

The Vedic chants and music were articulated with utmost care
as each intonation and inflection of voice could have
advantageous or undesirable effects. The Vedas and Upanishads
had more of sound and rhythm and were used as a source of
healing and enlightenment.

Indian Philosophy defines sound vibrations as Nada. It believes that

entire universe is made of Nada, the sound vibrations. Modern physics
now acknowledges that finally all matter is vibrations!
Even this primordial foundation is made up of two kinds of
vibrations – Aahat (Struck Sound) and Anahat (Unstruck
Sound). I suppose physics will reach there finally!

Today’s Indian classical music is in the form of ragas and gitis. It is more
systematic and structured.

91 of 213.
Indian Ragas
Specific ragas have been used for healing and are known as Raga
Chikitcha ( Healing System).
Indian music has a legacy of oral tradition and is independent of a written
score. The Raga System is totally voice based.
There is a vast collection of music formats for all occasions- Devotional
( kirtans, kritis and bhajans),folk, light, Classical.

Indian Music Therapy

This is totally in passive mode. The patient is only supposed to hear the
healing piece. This concept of Raga Therapy is relies on correct
intonation and right use of the basic elements of music - notes [swara]
rhythm, volume, beats and piece of melody.
There are further requirements of

Perfect Time –
Each raga has a specific time and season to be effective.
Time also means span, duration and interval to play the music.

Perfect Direction –
It means posture and conditions to listen to the music.

Perfect Force –
It means Tone, Timber, Rhythm, beats, sound quality and volume of
Music
In India many teachers have come out with healing tracks. As it is
considered a passive activity you just hear the music. But you must do so
for the prescribed span (how many minutes) and duration (How many
days) to be effective.

Crystal Therapy
Introduction
The Energy (Chi) and energy centers (Chakras) in our bodies can be
influenced by crystals and other resources.
Crystals and minerals have a long history in many civilizations
to aid healing and spiritual growth.
The concept of energy maintains that all energy and matter is actually
made up of living vibrations which can be manipulated by various means.
Actually Vibrational Medicine is becoming a separate discipline.

Crystal is a perfect natural electromagnetic conductor. Quartz crystal is

used by modern science to run precision time pieces, computers, radio
transmitters, lasers, and more.
The human body is a complex electromagnetic system. In
crystal therapy, assorted stones are placed on and around the
body in a pattern intended to vibrate with "chakras" of the body.
The vibrations thus calibrated help to adjust and balance the
flow of “chi”.

With the vibrations of the crystals a trained healer can supposedly move,
absorb, focus, direct and diffuse energy within the body.

98 of 213.
What is a Crystal?
A crystal or crystalline solid is a solid material, whose constituent atoms,
molecules, or ions are arranged in an orderly repeating pattern extending
in all three spatial dimensions.
The scientific study of crystals and crystal formation is crystallography.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal
There are at least seven kinds of crystal systems according to the shapes.
Read more about them here:
http://www.chemistry.co.nz/crystals_forming.htm

How do crystals get their color?

The presence of different chemicals causes the variety of colors to
different gemstones.
Many gems are simply quartz crystals colored by the environments to
which they are exposed.
Amethyst gets its color from iron found at specific points in the crystalline
structure.
Topaz is an aluminum silicate - it comes in many colors due to the
presence of different chemicals.
http://www.chemistry.co.nz/crystals_forming.htm
According to shapes and color there are many kinds of quartz and other
healing gems and stones.

What Is Vibrational Medicine?

Some basic natural laws are applied to everything that consists of matter
and space:

1. All living things own energy fields. This energy resides in the physical
as well as the auric body. It is not static. It beats at specific frequencies. It
reverberates with similar energy frequencies.

2. There are energy centers in the body. This energy flows from one
center to another. When it is flowing freely, balance and order of the
whole being is maintained. When there are any blockages or other
problems, sickness results.

3. This imbalance and blockage can be corrected by several natural

materials with corresponding vibrations.

4. Crystals, Light and colors, Sound and Music, The Four basic elements
– Earth, Air, Water and Fire all are part of Vibrational Medicine. As they
all are made up of vibrations and are supposed to balance and influence
other vibrations. Several theories and systems have come up with their
own techniques for healing using one of these.

5. Healing occurs at all levels of our being - physical, mental / emotional

and spiritual.

5. Vibrational tools can be effective by themselves. However they are

more effective when used with other holistic or even regular therapies.

100 of 213.
Complementary and not alternative medicine
Correct and systematic use over a period of time can help with all levels –
mental, emotional or physical. But it should not replace medical
treatment for physical illnesses. It should be used as a supplement to help
treatment on subtle levels and not as an alternate system.

Apart from general well being it can be of help in the following

circumstances:

Both acute and chronic problems

Stress related conditions
States of anxiety
Pre-operative care
Post-operative healing
Care of the terminally ill
Activate and support the natural self-healing processes
within the individual client
Support the recovery from any disease.

What can it help?
This therapy deals with underlying causes rather than symptoms. Hence
the effects are slow but cumulative.
Healing taking place over a period of time as energy is assimilated and
balanced throughout the energetic system. This ensures positive and
lasting results.
Apart from healing, crystals and other stones are also used for

Energizing
Grounding
Improving Relationships
Meditation
Protection

I will discuss briefly these other aspects of stones before continuing with
the healing part. General names of stones are indicated.
Energizing Crystals
Energizer type crystals have powerful high vibrations. They are good for
recharging when you are feeling fatigued or weakened.
Opal
Topaz
Grounding Crystals
Grounding stones help stabilize your energy. They counter forgetfulness
and the tendency to day dream perpetually.
Bloodstone
Coral
Love Crystals
They carry warm and soft energies. They help you balancing the
relationships.

102 of 213.
Apatite
Rose Quartz
Meditation Crystals
These help focus and channelize the mind during meditation.
Alabaster
Amethyst
Shielding and Protective Crystals
Crystals can be employed as protective energy shields.
For best results they should be worn or carried on the person. They absorb
any negative vibration before it can reach you. Hence they need to be
cleaned periodically.

What is Crystal Therapy?

Crystal therapy is the use of crystals or gemstones to assist healing.

All stones have their unique gift. Weight, color, shape, texture, clarity all
have an effect on a stone’s power.

Crystals have spiritual, healing and balancing properties. They emanate

energy rays and vibrations which can be used in several ways.

Crystals can be carried or worn on the person,

They can be located in a spot to enhance their healing
vibrations to benefit anyone that comes near.
Healers place stones on their clients' reclined bodies to
balance the chakras and aura.
Elixirs for drinking or bathing are made by soaking
crystals for a few hours in a glass of water.
Most gemstones have multiple healing qualities. Still,
some are known to be especially helpful in certain areas.

Chakra Balancing Crystals

For maximum benefit it is better to consult a professional.

Crystals are used:

On the body corresponding to the chakras.

Around the body in some geometric pattern making an
energy grid, which surrounds the patient with healing
energy. This removes blockages in the aura or the body's
electromagnetic field.
At the feet or held in the hands to “ground” an individual.

104 of 213.
As some Jewellery where the stone touches the body.
Mostly used for long lasting healing, control moods, and
protection from negative energies.
Healer may also use laser quartz wands, which can be
used to massage or even perform psychic surgery.
When they are placed in the area of the chakras, the color
of the stones should correspond to the color which is
associated with the corresponding chakra. It is better to get
your chakras evaluated before buying a stone.
Used in conjunction with aromatherapy and sound, the
color light experience of crystals are deepened and expanded
at the same time.

What happens during a Crystal Healing therapy session?
Crystal Healers are not allowed or trained to diagnose physical ailments.
They only assess the condition of the bio-magnetic field of a client.
This assessment is done by a wide-ranging interview to gain as
much knowledge and insight into your personality, lifestyle and
your problem as possible. That helps them choose proper
crystals to bring back the balance and harmony in your system.
Treatment covers the person in all three dimensions - body, mind and
soul.
You can remain fully clothed lying in a relaxed position. The
therapist places crystals on or around some or all of the Chakra
energy points. You may experience varying degrees
temperature change and perhaps a slight tingling. None of these
sensations will be unpleasant or uncomfortable. The treatment
induces a deep state of relaxation.
The usual time for therapy is one hour.

Cleansing and Charging a Healing Crystal

Crystals and healing gemstones need to be cleansed and charged

regularly.
A cleansed and charged crystal feels positive and bright, tingly
and cold to the touch. A crystal that feels hot, heavy or drained
needs clearing.
Crystals should not be handled by anyone other than the healer. They
should not be left lying around to get dirty. They must be cleansed and
charged before and after each healing session, or they will not lose the
positive energy.
There are many different ways to clean your gemstones. The
best cleaning method depends on the type of stone.

111 of 213.
Here are some methods for cleaning:

Sea Salt
Sea salt is the most conventional purifying agent in psychic work and
healing. It removes any negativity, and is a physical and psychic purifier.
It is excellent for the initial cleansing of a new stone and any other time.
Salt can be mixed with water or used dry.
To use salt water, mix a tablespoon of sea salt in a glass or
ceramic cup of cold clean filtered water. Do not use plastic or
metal containers. Place the stones in the solution and allow to
soak overnight.
To use dry salt, place the sea salt in a glass or non-plastic container and
bury the crystals with the points facing downward into the salt. Again,
leave overnight.
Sometimes a stone may take longer to clear, especially if it has been used
in a deep, intense healing. If this is the case, leave another day or two in
the sea salt.
For gemstone Jewellery the dry sea salt method is better.
Use sea salt only, table salt contains aluminum and other chemicals.
For those who live by the ocean, salt water can be brought from the beach
in a jar, or gently wash them directly in the ocean.

Moonlight
Moonlight is another way of cleansing your stones.
Simply place outside from the Full to the New Moon so it is awash with
moonlight. Waning Moons are good times to clear crystals, to dispel old
energies, but any time works.
The amount of time used varies with the sensitivity of the healer and the
amount of negativity that needs cleansing.
Put the stone out at dusk and bring it in at daybreak.

112 of 213.
Sunlight
Sunlight is a debated issue. There is a clear divide regarding its use. Many
people think it can harm the stone and others think it is a more powerful
way to clean. It depends on the healer as well as the stone.
Usually an hour in direct sunlight will clean most stones. But certain
stones like amethyst and Rose Quartz will fade in the direct sunlight.
Another Caution ... clear quartz can focus solar rays like a magnifying
glass and may be a fire hazard - do not leave your clear quartz out in solar
energy on flammable material.

Dried herbs
Burying your crystal in a cupful of dried herbs will clear it.
Recommended herbs for this are rose petals, sage, frankincense, myrrh,
and sandalwood. This is a gentle and a pleasant way, but takes longer than
sea salt.

Burying in Earth
Crystals may be buried in the Earth. Just dig a small hole, place your
crystal point down, and cover with soil. The amount of time needed is
personal choice. Be sure to place some marker so you can find it again!
Apartment dwellers can use a flower pot.
Smudging
Smudging means cleansing with smoke. You pass your stone through the
smoke of burning sage or cedar sticks or even incense and aromatic
smoke removes any negativity.
Washing
The crystal can be washed under cool tap water. Ensure that the points of
crystal are facing down to run the negative energy right down the sink!
Know your stones! Some stones will dissolve in water, while others love
to be soaked in fresh water.

113 of 213.
Be careful with lapis, sodalight and malachite as they damage quickly
under water exposure. Also, make sure you use filtered water.
NEVER USE WARM OR HOT WATER, THIS CAN FRACTURE OR
BREAK THE CRYSTAL.
Energizing with Reiki
If you know how you can energize the crystals with Reiki.

Programming Your Gemstones and Crystals

After you choose and clear your gemstone or crystal, you should dedicate
and program it.
Programming a crystal or gemstone focuses its powers.
Dedicating the stone means dedication to a high level healing energy or
Goddess (God) is to protect it from negative energy.
A crystal or stone that is programmed and dedicated in these ways
becomes much more powerful and useful as a tool. This is a very simple
process.
How to Program Your Gemstone
Hold the crystal or gemstone in your hand and sense its energy and think
of what you will be using the stone for.
Think of these uses, and then quietly ask the gemstone if it is
willing to act in the way you wish. The crystals energy may
increase with a yes or seem to disappear with a no. If the stone
accepts your intent, state in your mind that it be so.
How to Dedicate Your Gemstone
Once a stone is programmed, it will hold its intent until you or someone
else reprograms it. To prevent any negative energy from attaching itself to
your crystal you should dedicate it.
Hold the crystal or gemstone in your hand and state clearly in
your mind: "Only the most positive high-level energy (Or any
deity) may work through this healing tool."
Focus on your intent for awhile, and then end your meditation
with "SO BE IT." The stone is now dedicated.

114 of 213.
Choosing the Right Crystal for Your Purpose
Be clearly conspicuous about your purpose. Find out about the most
potent stone that is advised for your objective. Remember that not all
stones from the same family will work for the same problem. For
example, Topaz comes in several shades. Each shade is used for s special
goal. Also everyone may not react in a similar manner to a stone.
The weight, cut, clarity all influences the outcome. If in doubt, consult a
specialist.
Crystal Selection Process
You can follow this simple process to identify which crystal will work
best for your specific goal.
Clearly identify your purpose
Research for the crystal varieties that are prescribed for
your goal- from a book, online or from a professional.
Visit a shop and look for the stones. Try picking and
holding in your hand. You will intuitively feel the right one
that matches your vibrations. A good feeling- light, tingly,
happy, smiling, laughing - affirms that it is for you.
If buying online, concentrate in the image and analyze
your feeling.
If the feelings are negative it is not the right one.
Some issues
If you find a gemstone that feels right and yet you know that you cannot
afford it, well, then you have no choice but to leave it behind.
But take heart. Handle and hold the stone in your hand in the shop.
Sometimes handling the stone is enough. The healing Vibrations will
reach you. You can also imagine holding and getting positive vibrations
in your meditation.
Don't worry if you lose a stone. It is said that a stone will leave you once
the problem is resolved, or once it has got so much negative energy that it
cannot work anymore.

Tools

Healers use some special tools.

Crystal Healing Wands

Wands have the ability to focus energy through their points. They are
popular healing tools. They are made out of different crystals and stones.
Some are made up only of crystal and some also have some metal added
in various designs.
There are two popular shapes of wands, though healer can get
personalized versions too.
Straight Sticks with one rounded and one pointed end.
Sticks with a ball on one side and pointed end on another. (Also known as
Indian Wands)

http://www.assemblagepointcentre.com/ http://www.ancient-therapies.co.uk/crystal.htm

The stone should be chosen for its individual benefits and energies.
Crystal massage works at a deep level to assist in healing a variety of
ailments. Massage wands are used on acupressure and reflexology points.
They are used to channel energy in chakra balancing and aura cleansing.

116 of 213.
By using the appropriate crystal or stone it is possible to balance one's
energy and improve the overall well being.

http://www.ancient-therapies.co.uk/crystal.htm

The rounded end is used as a stroking tool using varying pressures

directly on the body.
Points can be utilized in healing for cutting through the energy field
during psychic surgery.
The ball is used to release deep muscular tension.
The stem is used to promote lymphatic drainage, thus assisting the
removal of waste and toxins from the tissues.
The point is used to enable accurate and effective stimulation of the
various pressure points upon the body.

Smudging
To "Smudge" means, to cleanse with smoke!

http://www.dailyom.com/articles/2004/261.html

The main action of smudging comes from Native Americans. It involves

lighting an aromatic bundle of herbs and allowing it to burn away any
negative energy.

The essential object for this is the herb bundle. It can be

purchased or made by hand.

Using a match or candle, put the flame to the smudge stick. Then blow or
wave it out, letting the stick to smolder the aromatic smoke to fill spread.

In absence of a smudge stick, loose herbs can be placed directly onto

burning wood in an indoor fireplace or into a fireproof container with
some charcoal. As the herbs begin to burn, use a feather or your hands to
move the smoke around the person, object or place you are smudging.

Traditionally each smudging herb is used for a different purpose. So it is

important to find the right herb for use. You may also use more then one.

118 of 213.
Here is brief information about main herbs

Sage - Most prominent herb to purify and protect.

Sweet grass - It is burnt after smudging sage to welcome the positive

influences.

Lavender - Restores balance and creates a peaceful atmosphere.

Rosemary - Effective for gaining clarity about perplexing problems.

Bay leaf - Protection against colds and flu.

Cedar - Used for house warming. Good purifier.

Some Other Uses Of Crystal Objects

Crystal Singing Bowls

Used for Sound Vibrational Therapy.

These musical bowls create different tones depending on the level of

water placed inside the bowl. ( Like Jal Tarang)
Certain tones invoke certain energy centers (chakras) for healing,
balancing, and meditation.

Crystal pyramids

Pyramids amplify and then firmly focus energy through the top (APEX).
A crystal pyramid can be used to draw off negative energy and blockage
from the Chakras.

http://www.healingcrystals.com/images/quartz_crystal_pyramid.jpg

Crystal pyramid balances & harmonize the aura around us and remove the
negative energy, therefore when we place this Crystal pyramid, in our
home or office, the place is purified by the power of crystal and Vaastu
defects are rectified.

Crystal Shri (SRI) Yantra

Two Dimensional Graphic Three dimensional structures

The Architecture of Shri Yantra is based on ancient Indian Vedic Science.

Two dimensional mystical geometrical design is converted into a three

dimensional structure.

Sri Yantra removes all the negative vibrations and adds positive cosmic
energies into our environment.

Sri Yantra picks up particular cosmic ray wave emitted by the

planets and other universal objects and transform them into
constructive vibrations. These are then transmitted to the
surroundings where the Sri Yantra is placed, thus destroying all
destructive forces within the vicinity.

Tai chi and QiGong (Chi Gung)
Introduction
Both these systems promote exercises and practices for self healing.
Both are of Chinese origin and part of Traditional Chinese Medicine
(TCM). They can be called Chinese yoga as they incorporate proper
breathing along with the exercises like our own Pranayam and yogic
exercises.
In fact many new teachers are incorporating all systems to make
out unified systems.
Qi Gong is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine and is used as a
preventative measure as well as a remedy for specific conditions.
Qi Gong (pronounced chi gung) is made up of words Qi =
“energy" and Gong = "cultivation" or "work". It is also known
as “energy cultivation", "energy work" or even "breath work".
The primary aim of Qi Gong is to promote personal energy for
self healing and wellbeing.
Traditional Chinese Medicine is based on the idea that there is a bio
energy system in the body. This bio energy or Qi travels round the
body in energy channels called meridians – just like the way the veins
carry blood around the body.
There are 12 main meridians and 8 secondary meridians carrying Qi
throughout the body and through the major organs. Illness is the result
of interrupted, weak or blocked flow of Qi.
Tai Chi literally means "Supreme Ultimate". It believes that
everything in the universe depends on the interaction between
the dual opposites of Yin and Yang.
Where Yin is represented by night, negative, soft, earth,
intellectual and Yang by day, positive, hard, sky, physical.
Originally Tai chi was known as Tai chi Chuan. Chuan is fist or
boxing.
It is a martial art using Yin and Yang to counteract each other. For
example, hard blocking moves are countered with soft evasive ones.

128 of 213.
It is also known as tai chi, , tai chi chuan, taiji.
Tai Chi is a moving form of Qigong that can be done as a
martial art or for health. Today, most people practice Tai Chi
for health maintenance and improvement or for mitigating the
effects of chronic conditions such as arthritis and normal aging.
Qigong practice as such, sitting and standing meditation, provides the
energetic foundation of Tai Chi.
Tai Chi, Qigong and Yoga all work with the breath, intention,
and focus. Tai Chi, most forms of Qigong, and some types of
Yoga add movement, which creates additional health benefits.
Tai chi is used today for self defense, and for physical and mental
health. Along with Yoga, tai chi is one of the fastest growing fitness
and health maintenance activities in the United States.

Guidelines for Qigong and Tai Chi Practice

Here are some guidelines before you start these practices.

Though these practices are all very mild, you can be at risk for injury,
especially of the knees. Always start carefully and allow your
progress to be "slow but sure".
Some of the complex and vigorous forms of Qigong are
contraindicated in people who are weak from illness or in the wisdom
years.

Do:
Relax deeply and allow the mind to be free of concerns and
considerations. In China this state of mind is also called "cheerful
disinterest", "neutral" and "emptiness".
Practice daily for desired results. Carefully and correctly implemented
Qigong and Taiji are safe to practice even several times a day. The
practices gently restore natural biological and energetic mechanisms
of body.
In Qigong feel free to make up your own routine and change the
practices to suit your needs, likes and limitations. One of the most
powerful forms of Qigong is called Spontaneous Qigong and is
completely intuitive.

In Tai chi it is less acceptable to modify the form. However, people

with severe diseases can modify the practices to respect their comfort
zone and promote self healing.
Always approach each practice with strong belief. Remember that
both Taiji and Qigong are profoundly healing practices.
Let the mind free of worries and negative emotions. It is when the
mind is free of concern that the profound, internal, self healing
resources are spontaneously activated.
Keep your breathing slow, conscious and calm.

130 of 213.
Don't:
Do too much. Take it very, very easy. Ease helps to activate the Qi.
Extra effort and trying hard go against the natural benefits in all
varieties of Qigong. Going too far, too fast may cause discomfort and
fatigue.
Expect too much, too soon. Most often dramatic results come over
time with vigilant practice.

Statutory Warning:

Qigong and Tai Chi are hazardous to

your health problems!
These practices may limit your doctor
visits.
They help resolve many ailments for
no cost.
 They have no side effects.
They have changed the definition of
health care.
 They are dangerous to the
conventional medical system and
could have a radical impact on your
personal life, your community, your
society and the national debt.

History

Qigong is an integral part of Chinese traditional medicine. Tai Chi

was developed later. This is also the basis of all later systems of
health, self defense and martial art systems. Kung fu also has roots in
it.
Tai Chi Chuan, meaning Grand Ultimate Fist, is one of the highest
levels of martial art and health practice. It was founded in China over
fifteen hundred years ago. Tai Chi Chuan is one of the oldest
documented forms of martial art. The history of Tai Chi can be
summed up as part legend and part historical record. Legend would
have Tai Chi being started by inspired sage or Taoist immortal in the
Wu Dang Mountains. History would say that Tai Chi was started by
men who dedicated themselves to the painstaking process of self-
cultivation through martial art.
The Tai Chi of today can be traced back to the Yuan Dynasty (AD
1271-1368) to a Taoist scholar by the name of Zhang San-Feng.
Zhang gave up his job as a government official to become a recluse
and study longevity. Already an old man before beginning his Tai Chi
training, he could defeat younger and stronger opponents. It is his
theories that would shape the evolution of Tai Chi for the next several
hundred years.
Tai Chi is a combination of physical exercise, breathing techniques
and meditation, Its slow, relaxed flowing movements of opening and
closing forms, advance and retreat, attack and defense, channelizes
energy and the body's natural movements to attain a high degree of
fitness, both mental and physical

132 of 213.
Differences between Tai Chi and Qi Gong

Though both manipulate body's energy by energy balancing and

strengthening practices, there are some significant differences.
Focus
Qi Gong focuses to heal and promote health and long life.
Tai chi moves were originally designed to maim and kill. Modern
training tends to concentrate on the self defense and health aspects.

Mode of exercises
Tai Chi is practiced in forms - sequences of moves of varying lengths.
Each form is a set of postures and movements that can take up to forty
minutes or more to do once

http://www.yogalifestyle.com/images/POBWRCTaiChi200.jpg

Qi Gong has sequences of moves called patterns or sets. A pattern can

range from 4 exercises to 20 exercises. They involve repeating a

133 of 213.
single movement or small number of movements. These can be varied
- if you have a sore arm you can skip the arm exercises and go to the
next. You can even design your own set.

http://www.qigongchinesehealth.com/files/2713418/uploaded/qigong_drawings_all.gif

Conventions
Tai Chi has strict rules to enforce the body's posture and placement.
For example, effort is taken during Tai Chi practice to ensure that the
knees stay aligned with the feet and do not extend beyond the toes.
Qigong forms can be more free-flowing than Tai Chi.
Ease of learning
With Tai Chi you have to remember and practice a long form. This
added requirements on the brain keeps it alert, helps with anti-aging.
Tai chi has to be learnt from a teacher. Qigong can be self taught
from a book or a video.
Breathing
In Qigong, you do slow, rhythmic breathing, often coordinated with
movement, right from the first class.
Tai Chi teachers do not teach breathing. They tell students to "breathe
naturally."
This means to breathe in one of two main ways:

134 of 213.
1) Abdominal breathing (sometimes called "Taoist breathing") and/or
2) reverse-abdominal breathing (where air is inhaled to the chest first
instead of the abdomen).
You end up using whichever type of breathing natural to you with
your Tai Chi movements.

Qi gong

The Three Treasures

The Three Treasures -- Jing, Qi and Shen – are substances/energies

that we cultivate in qigong.
They are translated as Jing - Essence, Qi – Vitality or energy and
Shen - Spirit.
The qigong practitioner learns to transform
Jing > Qi > Shen – path of transmutation
And also to transform the process back -
Shen > Qi > Jing - the path of generation or path of
manifestation.
The Three Treasures can also be thought of as three different
frequencies or vibratory spectrum.

Jing
The most concentrated or densely-vibrating energy is Jing.
It is the one associated most closely with our physical body.
The home of Jing is the Kidney Organ System, and it includes
the reproductive energy of the sperm and ova.
Jing is the root of our Vitality, the physical substance out of which our
life unfolds. Jing is the wax and wick of a candle. Or like hardware
and software of a computer – the physical basis for a functioning
system.
Jing is lost through excessive stress or worry. It is also depleted,
in men, via excessive sexual activity (that includes ejaculation),
and in women via abnormally heavy menstruation. Jing can be
restored through dietary and herbal supplements, as well as
through qigong practice.

136 of 213.
Qi
It animates our bodies, allows movement of all sorts: the movement of
breath in and out of our lungs, the movement of blood through the
vessels, the functioning of the various Organ Systems, etc.
Qi is associated in particular with the Liver and Spleen Organ
Systems. If Jing is the wax and wick of a candle, the Qi is its
flame. If Jing is your computer’s hardware and software, then
Qi is the electricity that allows the system to “turn on,” to
actually function as a computer.

Shen
Shen, is our Spirit or Mind.
It is associated with the Heart Organ System. Shen is the spiritual
radiance that can be seen shining through a person’s eyes – the
emanation of a universal loving-kindness, compassion, and
enlightened power.
If Jing is the wax and wick of a candle, and Qi its flame, then
Shen is the radiance given off by the flame – what allows it to
actually be a source of light. And in the same way that the light
from a candle depends upon the wax, wick and flame, so does
healthy Shen depend upon the cultivation of Jing and Qi.
It is only through the temple of a strong and balanced body that a
radiant Spirit can shine.

Qigong Forms
Though there are thousands of qigong forms they can be broadly
classified in two groups :
Lot of physical movement – similar to Tai chi or martial arts forms.
Internal focused on breath, sound and visualization that require little
or no physical movement. This is more like meditation.
Each specific form has its own specific techniques for cultivation of
life-force.

137 of 213.
Basic Qigong Axiom: Energy Follows Attention
There are basic mechanisms that are common to all forms of qigong.
The main maxim of qigong is “energy follows attention.”
Where we place our awareness – our conscious attention – is where
Qi, i.e. life-force energy, will flow and gather.

You can experiment with this right now by closing

your eyes, taking a couple of deep breaths, and then
putting your attention, your mental focus, into one
of your hands. Hold your attention there for thirty
seconds to a minute, and notice what happens.

You may notice sensations of warmth, or fullness, or a tingling

or magnetic feeling, or a sense of heaviness in your fingers or
palm. These are common sensations associated with a gathering
of Qi in a particular place in our body.
Each person’s experience, however, is unique. What’s most
important is simply to notice what it is that you are
experiencing, and to develop some kind of confidence in this
basic principle of qigong practice: energy follows attention.
Indian yoga systems also has this axiom, with the Sanskrit
terms, as: Prana (life-force energy) follows chitta (mind).

What is the mechanism by which “energy follows attention”? In the

initial stages of practice, this has a lot to do with the physical
breathing process. By learning to rest our attention on the cycling of
the inhalations and the exhalations – merging our mind with the
movement of the breath – we activate a capacity for our mental focus
to be able to guide the movement of Qi.
Vipassana follows this principle.

138 of 213.
Tai chi
Like qui gong, tai chi also has many styles.

The main differences between the different Tai chi styles are in the
speed and pace of performance and the way the body holds the
posture and intent.
Main popular tai chi chuan styles are:
Chen style-
Has coiling moves and fast transitions in speed between slow and very
fast , together with stamping moves and explosive releases of power.
Yang style –
Has evenly paced flowing moves.
Modern styles:
Modern styles are being created all the time. Frequently they are
created from a single traditional style or sometimes elements from
several styles are blended together.
Compact Tai Chi was created for people with access to a limited
amount of floor space.
Tai Chi for Arthritis was created from Sun and Yang styles to ease
the pressure on joints and encourage mobility.

Tai chi Training and techniques

The training has two primary features:
Solo form –
A slow sequence of movements which emphasize a straight spine,
abdominal breathing and a natural range of motion.
Pushing hands
For training movement principles of the form may need two people to
work together. .
The solo form takes the student through a complete, natural range of
motion over their center of gravity. Accurate, repeated practice of the

139 of 213.
solo routine helps to retrain posture, encourage circulation throughout
the body, maintains flexibility of joints.
Different variations of the solo forms can be practiced:

Fast–slow,
Small circle–large circle,
Square–round (which are different expressions of leverage
through the joints),
Low sitting/high sitting (the degree to which weight-bearing
knees are kept bent throughout the form.

10 principles of tai chi
Slow Down
This is the grand ultimate principle of T'ai Chi. The stillness that
comes with slowness is what T'ai Chi is all about. You get all the
benefits of T'ai Chi only when you do it slowly.

Take It Easy
Forcing things is contrary to T'ai Chi principles. Physical and mental
stress make you tense and you get all the movements wrong.

Think In curves
Movement in T'ai Chi is always curved and circular, never straight
and linear. This allows one movement to flow seamlessly to the next
and promotes a better flow of your chi (energy).

Sink Lower
Relaxed and slightly bent knees firmly ground you, letting energy
flow from the earth into your body. This also allows you to overpower
your opponent by getting beneath his or her energy centre.

Stay balanced
The importance of good balance cannot be over-emphasized--be it
T'ai Chi or real life. Both physically and mentally, good balance is
essential to T'ai Chi.

Go with the Flow

In the practice of T'ai Chi, the movements are performed slowly and
softly, yet there is an underlying strength; just as silk is both soft and
strong. Move and think as if you are on wheels, with no jerky
movements.

141 of 213.
Be Simple
Simplicity is the essence of T'ai Chi. A mind, which is filled with
dogmas, assertions, quotes, is really an uncreative mind. Live fully,
live naturally. And be simple to your core.

Balance your movements

Just as all things in the universe are reciprocal, T'ai Chi is about
balancing your moves- e.g., forward and back, weight-bearing and
non-weight bearing and reach and pull back. This is based on the
ancient Chinese philosophy of Yin and Yang, in which all things are
opposing yet complementary.

Move the whole package

In the practice of T'ai Chi, all parts of the body are linked together
and every movement involves the whole body. When one part of the
body moves, every part moves. When one part is still, every part is
still.

Stay Rooted
If there is no root, there is no fruit.
Always feel that you are firmly planted in the ground. This applies not
only to T'ai Chi, but to life.

Benefits of Tai Chi for Seniors

The University of Illinois conducted a controlled study on tai chi

involving a group of seniors with an average age of 80. In 2006, the
university released the results, which noted strong improvement in
balance, energy levels, ability to balance, flexibility, and sleep quality
in as little as six months.
The Mayo Clinic reports that regular practice, senior individuals may:

Relieve the symptoms of chronic

pain, anxiety, and depression.
Improve coordination, reducing
the number of falls.
Improve everyday physical
functioning, which promotes
independent living.
Reduce arthritis pain, joint
stiffness, and high blood pressure.
Maintain a healthy bone density
level to reduce breakage.
Improve overall fitness.

143 of 213.
Some points about tai Chi

It can be practiced anywhere.

There’s very little risk of overdoing it, and there’s no need
for special equipment.
However, like with any new exercise endeavor, it’s best to
check with your health advisor before trying it for the first
time.
Tai chi combines a type of meditative relaxation process
with flowing movements, which results in benefits to both
the power of the body and the mind.
While tai chi attracts people of all ages, tai chi can be
especially beneficial to those who have arthritis, are
recovering from injuries or have difficulties in working with
any but the lowest impact exercises.
Tai chi exercises are low impact. Therefore, these exercises
put minimal pressure on your joints and tendons.
Low impact does not mean low health benefits. Practicing
tai chi regularly can improve your cardiovascular health.
Tai chi helps to improve balance. Studies show that seniors
who practice tai chi regularly are less likely to fall than
those who do not.
Tai chi also helps to improve range of motion and
flexibility.
Many people have reported that practicing tai chi has helped
control pain.

144 of 213.
Tai chi For Seniors

It seems that most people want or need what tai chi offers - the
introspection, meditative aspects, flexibility, balance, mental
improvements) as they begin to age. Tai chi can be so wonderfully
non-competitive that all ages (20 – 90+ years) and skill levels benefit.
People who practice tai chi for the health benefits actually train
their bodies to find better balance, to be more rooted - so that
they respond in better ways in real life situations (walking on
ice, being bumped at a shopping mall - and not falling over).
They carry themselves in a softer manner - (i.e.: shoulders
relaxed, reducing head and back aches). The learn to breath
more deeply, improving body functioning and reducing stress.
All this is learned at a slow speed, and then becomes a part of
your reflexes.
The best part of these moves is that they can be done with a different
focus each time. In the morning - perhaps focus on the flexibility, at
work - maybe at the breathing and concentration, and before bed - the
relaxation and peaceful aspects may be most important.

Benefits for Elderly People Shown in Studies

According to the results of a study that included 40 frail elders, the

exercises were perceived as manageable, practiced twice a week for
31 to 60 minutes, twice daily.
The study results show that Tai Chi for the elderly should be
encouraged as a form of exercise that can be practiced even among
frail older adults. Elderly Tai Chi participants preferred practicing the
exercises among small group.
Another study showed that elders with decreased sensation in the feet
benefited from practice by improving balance related to loss of
sensation. Damage to nerve endings in the feet can increase risk of

145 of 213.
falls. Tai Chi exercises reduce fall risk among the elderly by
improving sensation in the feet
Other benefits of tai chi are the strengthening of leg and hip joints, as
well as the core muscles of the back and abdominals.
This may be why tai chi exercises improve balance in seniors while
walking. The ability to counter and change your gait if you begin to
slip can make the difference from landing on a hip or regaining
control.
The movements of a tai chi form are deliberate and precise, toning
muscles. In addition, tai chi is a weight-bearing exercise, which helps
prevent bone loss.
Tai chi can also be done seated .
Tai Chi can also reduce stress, making the exercises a safer alternative
than medications to treat anxiety, especially for elders sensitive to
anti-anxiety medications.
Tai Chi practiced by elders can relieve pain associated with
osteoporosis, arthritis and a variety of other chronic pain conditions.
Elders who engage in Tai Chi exercises enjoy the increased
socialization when practiced in a small group.

Exercise Points for Elderly

Consult your doctor before attempting any

exercise.
When you practice tai chi, wear comfortable
clothes and a flat shoe or sneaker.
Tai Chi exercises for elderly people can be
performed standing or in a chair.
 The exercises improve flexibility and
strength.
A session typically lasts about 40-50
minutes. First 15 to 20 minutes are used
with some stretching as a warm-up.
Although the movements are slow, tai chi is
an aerobic exercise. The tai chi form may
take up 20 minutes after which practitioners
spend time cooling down.
Tai chi is a way to learn how to relax and
concentrate intensely at the same time while
actually using your body. It is meditation in
movement.

Tai chi for Wheel chair

With your health care professional's permission you can do these. All
the upper body movements, and even the leg movements (if possible)
can be adapted to a sitting position. The moves can provide significant
back stretching and exercise - an important and valuable feature to the
exercise - but only if your back is in reasonable shape.
The 4 Minute Fitness video is even more appropriate for sitting
practice. The movements are all taught from a sitting and standing
position.

Always take it slowly at first, adapt it to your specific capabilities, and
consult your doctor, therapist or chiropractor!

Magnet therapy
Introduction
Magnet therapy is a safe, non-invasive therapeutic method. Various
kinds of magnets are used to supply natural pain relief for a wide range
of conditions without any adverse side effects. This is also known as
magnetic therapy, magnetotherapy or magnotherapy.
Magnets are used to diagnose. MRI (Magnetic Resonance
Imagery) is a powerful tool in modern diagnostics.
Magnets are also used to treat arthritis, cancer, circulatory
disorders, diabetic neuropathy (nerve disease), HIV/AIDS,
immune dysfunction, infection, inflammation, insomnia,
multiple sclerosis, muscle pain, neuropathy, pain, rheumatoid
arthritis, sciatica, stress and to increase energy and prolong life.
Magnetic fields are administered by applying magnets to required parts
of the body. This is done by magnetic field-generating gadgets.
Magnets are tools and not medicine. They aid underlying conditions like
circulation, improve energy levels, and provide oxygen to body cells –
thus helping to heal.
They should never be used exclusively for any major disease or medical
condition. Always use as a complementary therapy.
Results vary from person to person, and depend on the magnets used as
well as the depth and duration of the individual's specific medical
condition.

Body magnets are contraindicated in people having radio

therapy, an MRI or wearing a cardiac pacemaker.

How does magnetic therapy work?

There are two main theories to explain magnetic therapy.

1. One maintains that magnets produce a slight electrical current. When

magnets are applied to a painful area of the body, the nerves in that area
are stimulated, thus releasing the body's natural painkillers.

2. The other maintains that when magnets are applied to a painful area of
the body, all the cells in that area react to increase blood circulation, ion
exchange, and oxygen flow to the area. Magnetic fields attract and repel
charged particles in the bloodstream, increasing blood flow and
producing heat. Increased oxygen in the tissues and blood stream is
thought to make a considerable difference in the speed of healing.

The careful balance of positive ions (sodium, potassium) and

negative ions (chloride, calcium) in and around nerves
maintains a slightly negative charge. When this balance of ions
shifts, and becomes more positive, that triggers pain in the area.
The balance and movement of different ions signals and
regulates different biological processes. And these ions can be
influenced by external magnetic forces.
A magnetic field provides a natural way to assist the body’s
normal healing processes as it passes through all tissues and
cells.

Studies show that magnets are an effective therapy for the relief of pain.
Applying magnetic fields to an injured or painful area improves blood
flow and oxygen to enhance the body’s natural healing process and help
reduce pain and inflammation.

The body is a dynamic organism that consists of individual "electrical"
cells. Each cell has a positive charge at its nucleus, and a negative charge
at its outer membrane. When the polarities are equal, the body functions
at its finest level.

http://img183.imageshack.us/i/hiwtm5.jpg/
However, constant exposure to excessive static electricity
because of weather fluctuations, household electrical devices
and various environmental stimuli, the body is swamped with
positive ions.

This imbalance can result in tiredness and fatigue, headaches

and migraines, insomnia, muscle and joint pain, varicose veins
and other ailments of the circulatory, lymphatic and nervous
systems. Magnets can help the body correct this imbalance,

A Brief History of Magnetic Therapy:

Though relation between magnets, health and well-being is presently

resurging, but the concept is not new.

It actually dates back more than four thousand years to the pharaohs of
ancient Egypt and the oldest medical texts in China, India, Israel and
Greece. Well-entrenched currently in China, Japan, India, Austria and
Germany as a method for alleviating pain and promoting healing,
magnetic therapy has only gained acceptance in the United States within
the past few years.

Here is a diagram showing placement of magnets for various organs.

158 of 213.
How are the magnets used?

Magnetic therapy requires the use of thin metal magnets attached to the
body alone or in groups.

http://img.diytrade.com/cdimg/478368/8465862/0/1238222525/magnetic

They are sometimes used as Jewellery, mounted on bracelets and

necklaces. Sometimes they are attached to adhesive patches that hold
them in place. Some magnets are placed in bands or belts that can be
wrapped around the wrist, elbow, knee, ankle, foot, waist, or lower back.

159 of 213.
There are even magnetic insoles for shoes, blankets, and slumber pads.
These magnets may be worn for just a few minutes or for weeks,
depending on the condition being treated and the practitioner.

Electro-magnetic fields and static (permanent) magnetic fields
Electro –magnetic and static magnetic fields are different in application.
Here is a description of what they are and how they differ.

Electro-magnetic fields (EMFs)

Electromagnetism works when an electric current traveling through a
wire generates a magnetic field. In electromagnets the magnetic field is
formed around the wire. Wrapping that magnetic wire around an object
magnetizes it.
These have different frequencies which produce different good or bad
physiological effects.
Extremely low-frequency EMFs - are produced by power lines,
cell phones, home appliances, and other electronics. Numerous
studies have associated long-term exposure to low-frequency
EMFs with negative health effects. Research is on-going to
learn more.
Higher frequency EMFs - can actually have beneficial effects
on the body. Research has linked specific frequency ranges to
affect different physiological processes. For instance, different
frequencies can be used for pain relief, blood circulation, bone
healing, and depression.
Researchers are exploring Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
(TMS) for treating depression, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's
disease, and Tourette's syndrome. This uses electromagnetic
fields near the head, and has had promising results so far.

Static (permanent) magnetic fields

Static magnets are what magnetic companies use to build their products
around. They provide a consistent magnetic field (MF). The strength is
measurable.
These Magnets have static or permanent magnetic fields. They are not
dependent on outside stimulus or frequencies.

161 of 213.
A static magnet can be used to provide many benefits,
including: relieving pain, reducing swelling, improving sleep,
increasing blood circulation, and speeding up healing and
recovery.

Differences
Electro-magnetic fields must be set to a specific frequency range for
each particular problem. Multiple treatment sessions are needed for
multiple problems.
Static Magnet products provide multiple health benefits, like support for
movement and joint pain relief, and therapeutic cushioning for sleep.
Plus when you buy a magnetic product, you own it forever.
Static magnets can easily be used anytime, anywhere - for as
long as needed. They can be used at home, at work, while
exercising, or even while sleeping.
Electro-magnetic field therapy is much more expensive. EMF requires 4-
8 sessions, or more, depending on the condition being treated. It often
costs $60 - $250 for a 30-40 minute session, and it's not usually covered
by health insurance. EMF is best used for very severe conditions, like
non-union bone fractures.

162 of 213.
Types of Static magnets

There are two basic types of magnets used in bio magnetics.

Unidirectional Magnets

http://www.discovermagnetics.com/faq4.html

These magnets are a flat surface type with the Positive pole on one flat
side, and the Negative pole on the opposite flat surface.
The POSITIVE side is marked with a red color. The NEGATIVE
usually has a GREEN sticker. The GREEN NEGATIVE side is always
the side placed toward the body.
Unipole magnets are strongly recommended for therapeutic usage.

Bipolar Magnets
Bi-polar magnets have positive and negative poles on same surface.

http://www.discovermagnetics.com/faq4.html

A bunch of small bi-polar magnets achieve surface power at their top

and center, but less magnetic field penetration.

163 of 213.
Bipolar magnets have repeated north and south polarities on the same
side of the magnet, which can ultimately cancel out, or at least weaken,
each other's magnetic fields and also depth of penetration.

These two kinds can be made in different materials. There are at least
four kinds of magnets available now.

Ceramic Magnets
A compound made of strontium carbonate and ferric oxide powder.
Ceramic magnets are available commercially in 2300 gauss (grade 1),
3800 gauss (grade 5) and 3950 gauss (grade 8).
Ceramic magnets have a good balance of magnetic strength, resistance to
demagnetizing and economy. They are the most widely used magnets
today.
They are good for deep penetration, head, back, spine, etc.

Flexible Magnets
Commonly referred to as "refrigerator magnets", the magnets used in
magnetic therapy are stronger and thicker. Their gauss ratings range
from 1500 to 2650.

http://www.magnetictherapysales.com/Images/products/sm_grouptext.jpg

164 of 213.
They are a composite of resin and magnetic powders of different
materials molded in strips and sheets.
Used for medium penetration, larger muscle groups, back, neck,
shoulder, etc.

Neodymium Magnets

This is the strongest type of magnet. It is a blend of the rare earth

element, Neodymium, with Iron and Boron. Commercial Neodymium
magnets are typically 10,800 gauss (grade 27) to 12,300 gauss (grade
35).
These materials are costly and are generally used in very
selective applications their high energy products lend
themselves to compact designs that result in innovative
applications and lower manufacturing costs.
Short range penetration, finger, toe, TMJ

Placing the magnet against the body is critical; it promotes healing and
minimizes adverse effects. The blood flow increases, to begin the self-
healing process which promotes relief from adverse conditions.

These can be chronic pain, discomfort and stress; decreased

swelling and inflammation; energy enhancement; accelerated
healing of fractures; increased immune function in warding off
viruses; and the reduction or reversal of many of the ailments
mentioned above. In a nutshell it allows the body to perform at
its optimum level.

165 of 213.
How to gain the best results from magnetic
therapy?

The key to successfully using magnetic therapy for pain relief and
healing is consistency.
Not using the product regularly as directed, the pain and swelling can
come back, and slow the healing process. Consistent use will provide
faster, more significant results.
In general, magnetic therapy should be used directly over the area of
pain. But sometimes pain can radiate from one body area to another.
For example, with sciatica, back pain can radiate through the
nerve and travel down into the thigh too. And limping from foot
pain can start to cause hip pain.
Magnetic therapy products can also be placed over acupuncture meridian
points, to influence them and energy channels.
If magnetic therapy does not seem to be working well in one area, try
shifting the magnet to a related area. This may have a surprisingly better
effect.

166 of 213.
How quickly will magnetic therapy work?

This depends on 5 important factors:

Type of condition/injury
Severity of the condition/injury
How long the condition/injury has existed
Individual sensitivity to magnetic fields
Consistency of use

With recent injuries, most people start feeling better within a day or two
of consistent use. Some begin to see results within hours or even
minutes. (This is most noticeable with recent swelling or bruising.)
With chronic pain and degenerative conditions that have existed
for years, magnetic therapy often requires about 1-3 weeks
before feeling a noticeable difference.
In general, people over age 50 tend to respond much faster than
those younger.
Consistent use is most important. Not giving magnetic therapy enough
time to work is Number One reasons for poor results.
Using magnetic therapy as often as possible will provide faster,
substantial results.

Effects of magnet energy on the brain for pain
relief.

The Pineal gland is a small gland in the brain that produces melatonin,
serotonin, and other enzymes which are used by the body for natural
pain management.
Research has proved that the pineal gland is strongly affected by
magnetism hence magnets are useful in pain management. The exact
mechanism is still not understood.
Lack of sufficient
oxygen in muscle tissue
is one of the main causes
of back muscle spasms,
and poor circulation is a
major cause of back pain
and stiffness.
When applied to the
lower back, magnetic
therapy increases blood
circulation, carrying
more oxygen and
nutrients to muscle
tissues and cells. This
reduces spasm and pain,
and can improve
flexibility.
It also helps reduce
inflammation, which can reduce pain from herniated discs and
sciatica, where pressure is put on the nerves
in the spine.

Some of the benefits that magnetic therapy provides include:

168 of 213.
Pain relief
Reduction of swelling
Improved tissue alkalinization
More restful sleep
Increased tissue oxygenation
Relief of stress
Increased levels of cellular oxygen
Improved blood circulation
Anti-infective activity

Effectiveness of magnetic therapy

The effectiveness of magnetic therapy depends on five factors:
Magnet strength
Thickness
Number of magnets used
Spacing
Penetration Depth

Magnet strength:
It is essential to understand how magnetic strength is measured and the
suitable strength of magnet to use for healing purposes.

169 of 213.
Gauss rating
The gauss rating is the amount of magnetic energy a
particular magnet can store.
The strength of a magnet is measured in units of
gauss (a unit of measuring the intensity of
magnetic flux) or Tesla - 1 Tesla = 10,000 gauss. 1
mili Tesla (mTesla) = 100 Gauss

Because magnets are made from different types and grades of material,
each magnet has a different gauss rating.
Earth’s natural magnetic field is 0.5 gauss,

Magnets are perfectly safe and do not have adverse side effects
overdosing on magnetic strength is not a problem, under dosing is.
So how strong should a medical magnet be? A therapeutic magnet
should be a minimum of 800 gauss or 80m (mili) tesla to penetrate
through the skin, into the tissues and increase blood flow.
The stronger the magnet the deeper the penetration into the skin
and the wider magnetic field, so for more serious ailments and
chronic, longstanding conditions, stronger magnets are
recommended. 1,500-2,000 gauss/150-200 m tesla magnets are
considered to be high strength. This strength will reduce the
symptoms of many chronic inflammatory complaints, for
example tendonitis, cruciate ligament injuries, arthritis
(rheumatoid and osteo), spondylosis and general joint wear and
tear.
For extreme pain and very severe conditions super strength magnets are
better. These are magnets that have a gauss/m tesla rating of 3,000/300
or above.
Super strength magnets are rapidly gaining in popularity as they
such a deep level of penetration and create a very large

170 of 213.
magnetic field. Results are more rapid with this strength of
magnet. They are recommended for people who suffer with
multi location pain and all over body pain, for example
fibromyalgia, M.S., M.E. and severe arthritis.

The size of a magnet is not relative to its strength. Bigger magnets are
not always stronger.
Very high strength magnets, for example, a 3,000 gauss/300 m
tesla could be as small as 3mm in diameter. Similarly an 800
gauss/ 80 m tesla magnet could be quite large (in therapeutic
terms) and be the size of a 2 pence piece. The smaller of the 2
magnets is by far the stronger.

The average size of a therapeutic magnet is approximately 18mm in

diameter. Healing magnets are small because they have to be able to be
placed as close to the point of injury as possible. Larger ones may not fit
comfortably over the pain point.

The size of the magnet determines one important factor, the range of the
magnetic field. The larger the magnet the wider the spread of the
magnetic field.
This means that the field will radiate outwards in a wide circle,
but may not penetrate deep into the tissues.
A small magnet will not create such a wide spread magnetic
field surrounding the magnet but it will penetrate much deeper
into the tissues.

The general rule is: A weak large magnet will cover a large area on the
skin but will only have a shallow penetration depth into the skin. A
strong small magnet will cover a small area on the skin but will have a
deep penetration depth into the skin.

171 of 213.
To ensure that you have a wide magnetic field that also
penetrates deep into the tissues, choose a magnet that is over
2,000 gauss/260 m tesla and at least 8mm in diameter.

Thickness:
Principally, the thicker the magnet, the greater the depth of penetration.
However, you don't want it to be too thick, or it'll be awkward
to wear. Before buying, find out the thickness / penetration ratio
of the device.

Number of magnets:
For optimum results, magnets should be tightly grouped together - while
not touching each other - for maximum field strength and penetration.
The more magnets used, the greater their therapeutic potential.

Spacing:
There should also be a relatively thin (1/8" to ¼") pad between the
magnets and the skin's surface. This spacing not only makes the magnet
more comfortable to wear, it also levels out any bumpiness in the
magnetic field.

Penetration Depth
Penetration depth is the extent of the maximum distance a magnetic field
can reach. It varies, depending on the size and strength of a magnet. This
is also measured in Gauss.

As most injuries and conditions are located deeper within the

body - in muscles, bones, ligaments, tendons, nerves and the
spine. A magnet's fields must be able to penetrate deep
enough to reach the source of pain and injury.

172 of 213.
This shows how strong a magnet can be – magnetism
penetrating through 2.2cm thickness.

173 of 213.
Caution

Only use south or negative pole of your magnet on the body

A wrap or magnetic adhesive can be worn it as long as needed.
Use the suitable magnetic device for the location it is needed. If
you have back pain a magnetic bracelet will not work!
Do not place your magnetic product near your cell phone, credit
cards, computers, microwaves and anything that would normally
be affected by normal magnets.
If you find yourself sore, a rash occurs or an increase in pain after
applying the magnet (rare occasion) you should discontinue use.
Avoid magnets with a drug patch, as it could allow the drug to
enter the bloodstream faster.
For faster healing, place the health magnets on corresponding
acupuncture points.
Those who use devices such as a pacemaker, defibrillator or an
insulin pump should avoid the products because magnet therapy
could interfere with the magnetically controlled features of these
devices.
Magnet therapy shouldn't be used by pregnant women, as the
effects on the fetus aren't known.
The NCCAM says that magnetic therapy benefits are often seen
quickly, so make sure to purchase a magnet with a 30-day
warranty, so if you don't notice any benefit or if you experience
adverse effects, you can return the product for a refund.

Magnet Therapy benefits for Life

Areas in which health alternative medicine magnetic therapy can help:

Sleep - Sleep is important for well being. Many magnetic therapy

companies have created mattress pads with magnetic evenly placed on
the pad so the whole body will experience the therapeutic effects. Read
the study results here
http://www.magnetic-therapy-living.com/magnetic-mattress-pad.html

Air - The air in our home can get polluted due to many factors, such as
Tobacco smoke
Mold, dust, dust mites, pollen
Household products and pesticides
Certain gases such as radon and carbon monoxide
Pet dander
Air filtration systems created by magnetic therapy companies usually
have a more rigorous cleaning system than a regular one.

Relieving body discomfort - Many alternative medicine magnetic

therapy products can be worn all day or at night to help relieve
discomfort and pain caused by new/old injuries, or other painful
conditions.

Water - contaminated tap water is a major worry. Magnetic companies

have found that magnetic water filtration systems add natural minerals
back into the water which allows the water to be utilize correctly by your
body and there is less likely a chance for toxins to settle in your system.

Self Massage

Introduction
Massage is manual application of pressure and movement to the soft
tissue of the body-- the skin, muscles, tendons and ligaments.
Massage therapy dates back thousands of years.
References to massage have been found in ancient
writings from Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, Japan,
China, Egypt, and India.
Many holistic healing systems depend on some kind of massage. Of
all the systems mentioned in this book, except Music therapy all
others use massage in some form.
Massage is one of the easiest ways to attain and maintain good health
and well-being. Headaches, insomnia, aches and pains, tension and
stress can all be easily relieved with our own hands.
Though massage is generally considered to be performed
by hands only, now there are many devices to help with
the pressure and movement needed.
Massage is based on touch, and has remarkable effects on the health
of the person being massaged.

It improves circulation,
Relaxes muscles,
Relaxation of muscles also helps with improved mobility.
Aids digestion
Speeds up the elimination of waste products.
It also increases endorphin levels (the chemicals in your body
that make you feel good).
Increases blood flow and oxygen to the tissues. And in addition
to improving your circulation, it reduces your blood pressure.

182 of 213.
Massage stimulates the energy pathways (meridians) in your
body. This can return balance to your body and prevent or
correct health problems.

You do not have to depend on others for a satisfying massage. Some

forms of self massage you can do at home even while doing some
other activity.

For example you can:

Massage your feet while watching TV;
Massage your hands while talking on the phone.

Precautions
Massage therapy is not recommended for:
People with infectious skin disease, rash, or open wounds
Immediately after surgery
Immediately after chemotherapy or radiation, unless
recommended by your doctor
People prone to blood clots. There is a risk of blood clots
being dislodged. If you have heart disease, check with your
doctor before having a massage
Pregnant women should check with their doctor first if they
are considering getting a massage. Massage in pregnant
women should be done by massage therapists who are
certified in pregnancy massage.
Weakened bones from osteoporosis, a recent fracture, or
cancer
Directly over bruises, inflamed skin, tumors, abdominal
hernia, or areas of recent fractures.

Side effects of massage therapy may include:

Temporary pain or discomfort
Bruising
Swelling
A sensitivity or allergy to massage oils

Tips for an Effective Self-Massage

To do a self-massage correctly, be aware of your body. Know the

areas that are sensitive to pain and tension through physical
stimulation.
Here are some tips for the most effective self-massage:

Be gentle and go slow. Do not over-do. Pressing hard is not always

required. When done right, a massage should relax you.

Learn “trigger points” that contribute to pain. Trigger points are

sensitive, tender spots that allow pain to travel to other areas. For
example, shoulder muscles are a common trigger spot for headaches.
Learn where certain trigger points are and how to work on them to
effectively relieve pain. The acupressure maps are good guides.

Use massage tools. Massage tools provide amazing leverage and can
be very effective when used appropriately. The Cane, a hook-like tool,
is well-made and great for the upper and lower back, the hips, and the
legs. Tennis balls are cheap and versatile and can be used on the back
and buttocks. If you are not sure how to use a tool or what tool is best
for your condition, consult a health practitioner or massage therapist
for help.

Learn general body massage techniques. You can give your whole
body a massage from your head to your feet or massage a specific
area of pain or tension. Slowly apply pressure for a minute or so with
your thumb or finger to a tender area, than release and repeat. One of
the great benefits of self-massage is that you are in control and can
apply the exact amount of pressure needed at each point.

Learn the Art of Self-Massage

Massage helps reduce muscle tension and stiffness by increasing

blood flow to your muscles thereby relaxing tense muscles and
relieving the pain. It can also help heal some muscular injuries, such
as sprains.

Actually you practice the art of self-massage without

thinking about it. Rubbing the forehead because of a
headache, scrubbing yourself with a sponge in the
shower, rubbing your feet after a long day are all simple
and natural self-massage techniques.

Self-massaging is also more then a pain releaser, it is also

a good health motive. If you are already in good health,
routine self-massaging is an excellent way to prevent
illness. If you’re ill, self-massaging can help with the
healing process.

Before you begin, be in the correct and comfortable position. Lie

down on the bed or couch or sit in a comfortable chair that supports
back and neck. Massage one part of the body at a time. Don’t rush.
Give yourself about twenty minutes if possible.

You don't have to take a class to give yourself a proper rubdown. In

this article, you'll get the advice you need to reduce tension from head
to foot -- within seconds.

186 of 213.
Preparing for Self-Massage

Select a room for your self-massage that is quiet and at a

comfortable temperature.
Perform your massage in the positions that work best for you.
Most commonly this is lying on your back in a comfortable and
relaxed position. You may want to remove your glasses, jewelry,
and any restrictive clothing.
Each self-massage begins with a few quiet moments of deep
breathing to help you relax and focus on the task at hand. This
breathing pattern should be maintained throughout the massage
session.
Self-massage is best performed first thing in the morning,
before bandaging or exercising, and at other times as specified by
your therapist.
The length of time devoted to self-massage depends on your
condition and the instructions provided by your therapist.
Once practiced in self-massage, many individuals find that this
massage takes only a few minutes.
Most self-massage strokes use very little pressure and the hands
do not slide over the skin. Instead they move and stretch the skin
to stimulate flow of lymph through the lymphatic capillaries that
are located just under the skin.
Oils and lotions should be used in small quantities just to
hydrate the dry skin.

Techniques for self-massage:

For an easy case, literally just a few moments of gentle rubbing can be
enough. For slightly more difficult cases, a day or two of applying
small but frequent doses of rubbing will usually do the trick.
About a half dozen miniature treatments per day, each consisting of
about 20–30 kneading strokes, can dramatically reduce the pain of the
vast majority of trigger points. These are the most common strokes.
Pressing: Just press the point with fingers or fists.
Rubbing: To stimulate circulation and release muscle tension, rub
your muscles in a circular motion with palm of hand or fingers.
Vibrating: Use rhythmic knocking or light slapping with flat of hand
to improve blood circulation and to help relax muscles.
Kneading: Using a warm vegetable oil or essential oil of your
favorite aroma, lavender is very calming; knead your muscles as if
you were working with bread dough.
Final Stroking: End each massage with gentle strokes, slowly
moving outward motion.
Rhythmic Pumping Motion: A rhythmic pumping self-massage
motion is used to stimulate areas such as the terminus and major
lymph nodes. This motion is performed by very gently pressing with
the fingers, moving the skin in a circle the size of a coin, and then
releasing the pressure.
Stretch-Twist-Release Motion: The stretch-twist-release motion is
used to stimulate the flow of lymph through the tissues of the skin.
This motion is performed by gently placing three fingers
on the skin. The fingers gently stretch the skin for about
an inch (2.5 cm) without sliding and then twist slightly to
the right or left.
This stroke is completed by lifting the fingers.
Sweeping Motion: A sweeping motion, also known as effleurage, is
used at the conclusion of a massage

188 of 213.
This motion is performed as a gentle sweep of the fingers
across the skin as if brushing bread crumbs from a table.

Basic self-massage instructions

Start with some slow, deep breaths and light, flowing strokes
along the section of the body that you are massaging. After a few
of these strokes, you can start to cup your hand to the shape of the
body part you are working on and create more pressure, working
your way slowly into the muscle. For deep muscles, you can even
use your fist and knuckles as a massage tool. Keep massage
motions smooth and even, focusing on moving slowly, rather than
trying to get as deep as you can as quickly as possible.

Use your fingers also as a massage tool. Take two or three

fingers and move them in a gentle, circular motion to release
tension in a muscle, or apply fingers to a specific pressure point
and briefly hold them in place.

Lists of pressure points can be found in acupressure books and

on acupressure charts; you may find it helpful to hang a chart
next to the area you use for self-massage as a reference.

Some more specific tips

Rub with what?

For ease of massage, you can use little oil, lotion or cream.
Rub the trigger point with your fingertips, thumbs, fist, and elbow,
whatever feels easiest and most comfortable. Tools can be used for
spots that are harder to reach.
Rub in what way?
Either simply press on the trigger point directly, or apply small
kneading strokes, either circular or back and forth.
Rub how hard?
The intensity of the treatment should be strong, but not unbearable. Be
gentle at first and increase intensity slowly. Pressure on a muscle knot
should have a relieving, welcome quality. If you are wincing or
gritting your teeth, be gentler.
What if the condition deteriorates?
It usually won’t. But if you experience any negative reaction after
treatment, simply stop.
Rub where?
For basic self-treatment, trust your instincts: rub where it hurts! For
instance, if the top of you shoulder aches, search for trigger points
mainly in the top of your shoulder.
Rub how much?
Massage each suspected point for about 30 seconds. This is actually
enough for many trigger points. Five minutes is roughly the maximum
that any point need at one time, but there is not really any limit — if
rubbing the point continues to feel good, you can certainly keep
going.
Rub how often?
As long as you aren’t experiencing any negative reactions, you should
massage a key point at least once a day, and as often as a half dozen
times per day.

Relaxation techniques
You may try the relaxation techniques below along with the massage
techniques. For the exercises given below you don’t need anything
other than a few tennis balls, a quiet corner and your own two hands.
Conscious Breathing - simply notice your breathing in this moment.
Put one hand on your chest and one hand on your belly. Breathe long,
slow breaths, inhaling through your nostril and exhaling through your
mouth. Become aware of your breathing and let your body relax.
Tense and Relax - focus on your breathing, lying down. With each
breathe become aware of your body and tensions. On exhalation, let
go of the tension. This method involves tensing and relaxing each
muscle group in the body, beginning with your feet and working your
way up to your head or vice versa. This is like Shava asan in Yoga.
Tense the muscle for 10 seconds and then let go. Then give yourself
15 to 20 seconds to relax and just notice how the muscles feel when
you let go and relax.
Some examples: clench your fist, tighten your upper arm by showing
your biceps, tense your forehead, raise your eyebrows, clench your
eyelids shut, press your shoulders back, shrug your shoulders, pull in
your stomach muscles, slightly arch your back, tighten your buttocks,
curl your toes. Notice the difference between tensing the muscle and
then letting it go.

Some Daily Routines

Every morning and evening, hammer out the kinks.

Warning: If you're taking any kind of blood thinner, avoid this

one; it can cause bruising.

Using your fists, gently thump the outside of your body, starting with
your legs and arms, working from top to bottom.
Then move inward to your torso and thump from bottom to top.
When done in the morning, this self-massage technique will waken
and prepare your body -- and mind -- for the day ahead. When done
before bed, it calms down the mind and beats out the stress and
tension of the day.

Rub your belly after every meal.

Most of us do this instinctively, especially after overeating. Place one
or both palms on your abdomen and rub it in clockwise circles. This is
the same direction food naturally moves through your intestine, so
your circular massage will help to stimulate digestion.

Rub yourself down before and after exercise.

Massaging your body before your stretching, cardio, or strength
training increases blood flow to the muscles.
Massaging your muscles after exercise helps waste removal and speed
muscle recovery.
Before exercise, use a pummeling motion with your fists to bring
blood flow to your leg and arm muscles. After exercise, rub along
your muscles with your palm or fist, moving in the direction of your
heart.

192 of 213.
The Rubdown and basic care of body

Use some lotion or oil to lubricate and make massage easier and
a pleasure. Aroma therapy prescribes different oils for different
ailments.
After a tiring day, take off tight clothes and shoes, wash feet
and hands and give a rubdown.
Fill a tube-style athletic sock three-fourths full with uncooked
rice, tie off the end tightly with a rubber band, and stick it in the
microwave for 2 minutes. Remove the sock and rub it up and
down your legs and arms for a gentle, soothing hot massage.
Leave the sock filled with the rice; you can use it over and over.
You can add spices to the rice if you wish to have a pleasant scent
while massaging.
Give yourself a bear hug to relax away shoulder tension. Cross
your arms over your chest and grab a shoulder with either hand.
Squeeze each shoulder and release three times. Then move your
hands down your arms, squeezing and releasing until you get to
your wrists.
After tennis, cycling, swimming or any other arm-tiring sports,
give your arms a pinch. Place your right arm across your chest
with your elbow bent. Reach across your chest with your left arm
and pinch your right arm's triceps, near the shoulder, with the
thumb and index finger of your left hand. Hold for a few seconds,
release, and then pinch again an inch lower on the arm. Continue
pinching and releasing until you've made your way to your elbow.
Then pinch your right arm's biceps near your armpit and work
your way in the same way down to the elbow. Then switch arms.
This will release the tension in your muscles and help improve
blood circulation.

Specific Massages

Headache

When you have a headache, stand up, bend forward from the
hips, and place your forehead on a padded chair. The chair will
gently place pressure on your head as you relax in the forward
bend. Hold about 30 seconds.
When you rise, sit down and spread your fingers through your
hair, making a fist. Gently pull the hair away from your head.
Hold 2-3 seconds, then release. This stretches the fascia along
your scalp, releasing tension. Continue to grab different clumps
of hair all over your head, working from the top front of your
head, progressing to the sides, and then to the back of your head.
Once you have grabbed and released your entire scalp, return to
work, feeling refreshed.
Place your thumbs behind your ears while spreading your
fingers on top of your head. Move your scalp back and forth
slightly by making circles with your fingertips for 15-20 seconds.
Hands

Start with the bottoms of your palms by clasping your fingers

and rubbing the heels of your palms together in a circular motion.
Then, with your hands still clasped, take one thumb and
massage the area just below your other thumb in circular
motions, moving outward to the center of the palm.
Repeat with the other hand.
Release your fingers and use your thumbs and index
fingers to knead your palms, wrists, and the webbing
between your fingers.
With one hand, gently pull each finger of the other hand.

194 of 213.
Finish by using your thumb and index finger to pinch the
webbing between your other thumb and index finger.
Stroke the back of your hand, pushing firmly up toward the
wrist and gliding back gently. Then squeeze the hand all over,
pressing it between your palm and your fingers.
Squeeze each finger and make circular pressures over the joints
with your thumb. Then hold the finger at its base and pull it
gently to stretch it, sliding your grip up the finger and off the tip.
Stroke between the tendons on the back of the hand with your
thumb. Stroke in the furrow to the wrists, doing four strokes in
each furrow.
Turn your hand over and support the back with your fingers.
Do firm circular and static pressures with your thumb, working
all over the palm and around the wrist.
Finish the massage by stroking the palm of your hand from the
fingers to the wrist. Push into it with the heel of your other hand,
then glide gently back and repeat.

Feet and Leg Massage Techniques

Foot massage is very soothing. After you try the following techniques
on one foot, switch feet and repeat

Put one hand on the top of your foot and the other under the
sole. Stroke smoothly from your toes to your ankles. Glide your
hands back to your toes and repeat.
Support your foot with one hand and work on each toe
individually. Squeeze each toe firmly, and gently stretch with a
gentle pull.
With one thumb on top of the other, do a line of firm pressures
down the center of the sole and lines on either side. Then, with
one thumb, do circular pressures on the arch and ball.

195 of 213.
Support your foot with one hand and make the other into a
loose fist. Do knuckling movements all over the sole by rippling
your fingers around in small circular movements.
Sitting on a comfortable couch or chair, thread the fingers of
one hand through the toes of one foot, spreading out your toes
and placing the palm of your hand against the bottom of your
foot. Use your palm to gently rotate the joints of your forefoot
forward and back for one minute. Then remove your fingers from
your toes, hold your ankle with one hand, and gently rotate the
entire foot with the other hand, starting with small circles and
progressing to larger circles as your ankle warms up.
Rub lavender oil onto your feet before bed. Lavender-scented
oils are available at most health food stores. The smell of
lavender and the gentle massaging motions you make as you
work the oil into your feet will help you to unwind. An added
bonus: The nightly oil treatment softens and hydrates any rough,
dry spots on your feet. Once you're done with your massage, put
on a pair of socks to prevent the oil from rubbing off onto your
sheets.
To relieve your calf muscles sit with your knees bent and feet
on the floor. Grasp one ankle, placing your thumb just above your
Achilles tendon. Press your thumb into the bottom of your calf
muscle, hold for 5 seconds, and release. Move an inch up your
calf and repeat the pressure. Continue pressing and releasing until
you get to your knee.
Sit in a chair or on the floor. Get comfortable. You may or may
not want to use lotion or oil. Rest one foot on the opposite leg.
Put one hand on top of the foot and the other closer to your toes,
then stroke smoothly from your toes to your ankles. Glide your
hands to the sole of your foot and massage the underside of your
foot. Support your foot with one hand and with the other make a
fist. With a circular motion move along the sole of your foot.
Support your foot with one hand and work on each toe
individually. Squeeze and gently twist and stretch each toe.
Stroke around the ankle with your fingertips, as you stroke up

196 of 213.
toward the leg and then glide back to your toes. Finish by
stroking your entire foot again.
Stroke around the ankle with your fingertips, as you stroke up
toward the leg and gently as you glide back. Finish by stroking
the foot as you did at the beginning
Sit on a chair and place one foot on the opposite thigh. Rub
some massage oil or lotion onto your foot if you like. Apply
pressure with your thumbs to the sole of your foot, working from
the bottom of your arch to the top near your big toe. Repeat five
times.
Massage each toe by holding it firmly and moving it from side
to side. Extend each toe gently out and away from the ball of your
foot. Then apply pressure to the areas between your toes.
Hold your toes in one hand and bend them backward holding
them there for five to ten seconds. Then bend them in the
opposite direction and hold for five to ten seconds. Repeat three
times.
Press and roll your thumbs between the bones of the ball of
your foot.
Finally one of the simplest ways to feel better - simply walk
barefoot in grass and let the earth massage your feet

Neck and Head

Use your hands to heel your neck. Once an hour, take a break
from staring at your computer and clasp your fingers behind your
neck, pressing the heels of your palms into your neck on either
side of your spinal column. Massage the heels of your hands up
and down in slow, deliberate motions. Then place the fingers of
your right hand on the left side of your neck just below the base
of your skull. Press into that muscle, tilt your head to the left, and
rub downward until you reach your shoulder. Repeat three times,
and then switch sides.

197 of 213.
Stretch your head back so the top of your chair presses into
your neck just below your skull. This also stretches out the front
of your neck, which tends to get tight during deskwork. Hold for
20 seconds.
Pressure points in your skull can relax your whole body. There
are two very significant acupressure points at the base of the skull
on what's called the occipital ridge. If you apply consistent
pressure there, you can achieve total relaxation.
To find these points and apply pressure, use this simple
solution. Put two tennis balls in a sock and tie the end.
Lie on your back on the floor and place the sock behind
the upper neck, so that the two balls each touch the skull
ridge that's right above the hollow spot. Stay like that for
20 minutes. You can listen to soothing music. The
pressure on those acupressure points send messages
down the spinal column to relax all the muscles and it is
very effective.

Sinuses
Open your clogged sinuses with some finger pressure. Start just
above your brow line. Place your finger pads just above your
nose, press down and rub outward, tracing your brow line as you
go. Repeat two or three times.
Then place the pads of your fingers below your eyes and to the
sides of the bridge of your nose, rubbing outward and moving
downward with each stroke. Now use your thumbs to massage
your cheekbones, making small circles starting at the center of
your face and moving out toward your ears.
Finally, place your thumbs on your temples and massage them
in small circles.
For Sinus Pressure Relief – place your fingertips at the bridge
of your nose. Slowly slide your fingers down your nose and
across the top of your cheekbones to the outside of your eyes.

198 of 213.
Eyes
Give your tired eyes some heat. Rub your hands together
vigorously until you feel the skin on your palms begin to warm
up. Then cup one hand over each eye, feeling the heat from your
hands relax your eyes.
Close your eyes and place your ring fingers directly under your
eyebrows, near the bridge of your nose. Slowly increase the
pressure for 5-10 seconds, then gently release. Repeat 2-3 times.

Shoulders

Stroke your right shoulder with your left hand. Starting at the
base of your skull, stroke down the side of your neck, over your
shoulder and down your arm to the elbow. Glide back to your
neck and repeat at least three times. Then do the other side.
Make circular pressures with your fingertips on either side of
the spine. Work up the neck and around the base of the skull.
Then squeeze and release the flesh on each shoulder and at the
top of your arms.
Loosely clench your left hand into a fist and gently pound your
right shoulder. Keep your wrist flexible. This can be very
invigorating if you are tired. Repeat on the other side.
Finish by stroking smoothly with both hands. Start with your
hands on the side of your face and glide them gently down under
your chin. Slide your hands past each other at the front of the
neck, so that each hand is on the opposite shoulder. Stroke gently
over your shoulders, down your arms and off at the fingertips.
Repeat as often as you like. This hypnotic stroke can relieve
headaches and tension.
Shoulder Tension Relief – reach one arm across the front of
your body to your opposite shoulder. Using a circular motion,
press firmly on the muscle above your shoulder blade. Repeat on
the other side.

199 of 213.
Abdomen
This massage is ideal for menstrual pain. Start by stroking
clockwise around your abdomen with one hand following the
other in a circle, using the whole surface of your hands.
Knead all over your abdomen with your fingers and thumbs.
Then roll onto your side to knead your hips and bottom. Turn
onto your back and stroke around your abdomen again.
To wake yourself up after a massage, pummel your hips and
bottom vigorously. Stand up and with loosely clenched fists,
pummel the area very quickly. Flick your hands away as soon as
you strike the skin.

Face Massage

Just touch your face. There's no need to knead it. With a very
light touch, cup your cheeks and temples with your hands using
no more pressure than the weight of a nickel. Hold your hands
there for a minute. The warmth of the hands relaxes the muscles
and connective tissue, bringing on an overall sense of relief.

Massage and Bodywork Tools

There are many products you can use to assist self massage for
relaxation. Balls, Spiky shoes and sandals are used for massaging feet.
There are also mechanical and electric devices also available for self
massage.

Get on the Ball

The tennis and golf balls are the easiest and cheapest tools. There are
now spiky balls available in many sizes too roll on a tennis ball
whenever you feel tight.

If your foot feels tense, stand with one hand on a wall for support and
place the arch of one foot on top of the ball. Gradually add more body
weight over the foot, allowing the ball to press into your arch. Begin
to slowly move your foot, allowing the ball to massage your heel,
forefoot, and toes.

Fill the bottom of a shoe box with golf balls and stick it under your
desk. Occasionally take off shoes and rub your feet over the golf balls
– it is great stress buster.

You can also lie on the ball to get at that hard-to-reach spot between
the shoulder blades or to soothe tension in your low back.

Keep tennis, golf or special spiked balls on your desk and squeeze
them regularly. The squeezing motion helps rejuvenate tired fingers
and hands, and strengthens your hands for other self-massage
techniques.
