MPM2D Review questions (Ch 1)

1. Solve each of the following linear systems by graphing.

1
a) 𝑦 = 𝑥 − 9
4

3
a) 𝑦 = − 2 𝑥 + 5

b) 𝑥 − 𝑦 + 10 = 0

b) 5𝑥 + 3𝑦 + 18 = 0
2. Determine the point of intersection for each of the following pairs of lines.

a)

b)
3. Solve the linear system 3𝑥 + 𝑦 = 8 and 4𝑥 − 5𝑦 = 93 by substitution. Then check your answer.

4. Solve the linear system 10𝑥 − 3𝑦 = 16 and 15𝑥 − 12𝑦 = −11 by elimination. Then check your answer.
5 7 8 3 2
5. Solve the linear system 4 𝑥 − 6 𝑦 = 3 and 2 𝑥 + 5 𝑦 = −1. Then check your answer algebraically.

6. Solve the linear system 𝑦 = −0.6(𝑥 − 8) and 𝑦 = 0.25(𝑥 + 26). Then check your answer.
7. A small concert venue sold a total of 695 tickets for a concert. The ticket prices were $80 and $32. The
total revenue from ticket sales was $32 560. Determine the number of tickets sold at each price.

8. An office assistant placed two orders from a bakery when preparing for two morning business meetings.
The first order was for 12 chocolate croissants and 25 gourmet bagels and the total bill was $104.40.
The second order was for 15 chocolate croissants and 18 gourmet bagels and the total bill was $98.70.
Determine the cost of each item.
9. A small sports league is booking a venue to host its end-of-season banquet. One of the venues charges
$700 to book the space plus $24.50 per meal for each guest. Another venue charges $936.50 to book the
space plus $19 per meal for each guest. Determine the number of guests for which both venues will have
the same total cost and then determine the average cost per guest.

10. A bulk food store ordered two kinds of muesli. “Fruit First” boasts a whopping 26% raisins while
“Morning Sunshine” contains only 8% raisins. Determine the amount of each kind of muesli that must
be mixed together to prepare 7.5 kg of a blend called “Nature’s Bounty” that includes 23% raisins.
Answers:

1. a) The solution is the point of intersection (𝑥, 𝑦) = (8, −7) shown in the following graph:

1. b) The solution is the point of intersection (𝑥, 𝑦) = (−6, 4) shown in the following graph:
2. a) The point of intersection is (−30, 9).

2. b) The point of intersection is (48, 44).

3. The point of intersection is (7, −13).

4. The point of intersection is 73, 3 8.

2 7
5. The solution is (𝑥, 𝑦) = 7− 45 , − 38.

6. The solution is (𝑥, 𝑦) = (−2, 6).

7. There were 215 tickets sold for $80 and 480 tickets sold for $32.

8. The cost of one chocolate croissant is $3.70 and the cost of one gourmet bagel is $2.40.

9. The cost is the same for both options when there are 43 guests. The average cost per guest is $40.78.

10. They need to mix 6.25 kg of muesli having 26% raisins with 1.25 kg of muesli having 8% raisins.
