Statement of the Problem
The study aims to ascertain the efficacy of Calamansi extract and
Citronella oil as a natural liquid vaporizer solution designed to repel
mosquitoes.
Specifically, the questions sought to be answered are herein presented below:
1. With respect to the given time limit of 1 hour, what is the time limit for
the effectiveness of Calamansi extract and Citronella oil solution as
repellent after the vaporizer has been turned on, then off?
2. What are the distance and time ranges of the repellency of the
mosquito repellent with a given distance of 1 meter and a given time of 1
hour?
a) minute(s)
b) decimeter(s)
Hypothesis
Ho. The solution is not effective in repelling mosquitoes no matter the
time and distance.
Descriptions in Details of Methodology
Collection and Preparation of the Materials
Ten strands of Citronella leaves and 20 pieces of unripe Calamansi fruit
were collected from the area. Ten strands of Citronella leaves and 45mL cup of
palm oil were placed in a pot to boil on medium heat for 15 minutes. The
solution was filtered using a strainer. 20 Calamansi fruits were sliced in half
using a knife. A strainer was used to extract and filter the Calamansi juice. It
was ensured that there were no solid excesses in the solution.
Formulation of the mosquito repellent solution
Mix 45mL Citronella oil and 15mL Calamansi extract inside a bowl.
Use a stirrer to stir the mixture with. Pour the solution inside the liquid
vaporizer container. Set the container aside.
Testing
The testing occurred in a well-illuminated room with bright walls for the
mosquitoes to be visible. A distance of 1 meter was set from the vaporizer to
the mosquito sample. A mark was made for every decimeter (dm) to ascertain
the distance range of the vaporizer. A timer was set at 10 minutes. A box made
of transparent PVC plastic 10cm (in length) x 5cm (in width) x 3cm (in height)
was prepared. Another piece of PVC plastic material that measures 10cm (in
length) x 5cm (in width) was prepared as it served as the lid of the glass box.
These were used in the testing procedure.
The container of the vaporizer was connected to the vaporizer itself. The
vaporizer was plugged in an outlet. The setup was left for 10 minutes. The box
was placed in the first decimeter from the vaporizer and the mosquitoes
present in the box were counted. These steps were repeated until the final
decimeter. The vaporizer container was checked periodically every 10 minutes
to see if it needed to be refilled or not.
Data Gathering
The data gathered from the testing procedure was collected by counting
the mosquitoes in the box per every decimeter.
