Erikson's Theory in Child Development

Erik Erikson's theory of psychosocial development proposed that personality develops through eight stages from infancy to late adulthood. At each stage, the child negotiates a psychosocial crisis that can have positive or negative outcomes for development. The theory emphasizes how social interactions and cultural experiences influence development. It provides a framework for understanding development across the lifespan and highlights the importance of social relationships. Understanding developmental theories can help identify influences on children and support healthy development through meeting their social, emotional, and educational needs.

Question no: 1

In your opinion why Erik Erikson theory is important to the child development?

Solution:

 Erik Erikson theory:

The German psychoanalyst Erik Erikson believed that the foundation for positive – or negative –
socialization is constructed in childhood. Erikson's “Eight Stages of Psychosocial Development” offers a
key that may unlock a child's ability to form relationships.

 Erik Erikson theory according to my point of view:

According to my point of view Erikson believed that each stage of psychosocial development was important,
he placed a particular emphasis on the development of ego identity.

 The key idea in Erikson's theory:

The key idea in Erikson's theory is that the individual faces a conflict at each stage, which may or may not
be successfully resolved within that stage. For example, he called the first stage 'Trust vs Mistrust'. If the
quality of care is good in infancy, the child learns to trust the world to meet her needs.

 Erik Erikson says about Child:

Erikson maintained that personality develops in a predetermined order through eight stages of psychosocial
development, from infancy to adulthood. During each stage, the person experiences a psychosocial crisis
which could have a positive or negative outcome for personality development.

 Explanation:

Erikson contributed to early year’s education in a great way, including being the first psychoanalyst in
Boston. He helped both teaching professionals and parents understand better how people, especially
children, can form their own identities through the different life stages and developments they go through.

One-strength of psychosocial theory is that it provides a broad structure which can be used to view
development across the human lifespan. It also focuses attention upon the essentially social nature of human
beings and the critical influence social relationships have on growth and development.

 Benefits of theory on child development:

Developmental theory, focusing on how children move through different life goals at differing periods of
time, can assist in identifying where the primary source of influence is for a child at any given point in time.
Healthy development means that children of all abilities, including those with special health care needs, are
able to grow up where their social, emotional and educational needs are met. Having a safe and loving home
and spending time with family―playing, singing, reading, and talking―are very important.

Question no: 2

Write down any five strategies to use for behavioral change among children?

Solution:

These are the following strategies to use for behavioral change among children.

1. Behavioral:

Behavioral Development applies a behavior analytic approach to the field of human development and
behavior change across the lifespan, by examining both the acquisition of basic skills and the development
of more complex behaviors.

2. Cognitive:

Cognitive development means how children think, explore and figure things out. It is the development of
knowledge, skills, problem solving and dispositions, which help children to think about and understand the
world around them. Brain development is part of cognitive development.

3. Social learning:

Social learning theory suggests that social behavior is learned by observing and imitating the behavior of
others. Psychologist Albert Bandura developed the social learning theory open in new as an alternative to
the earlier work of fellow psychologist B.F. Skinner, known for his influence on behaviorism.

Young children use this technique to imitate and understand the behavior of other people, especially their
parents. Later in life, children, adolescents and even adults continue to use other people as role models to
influence their actions and behaviours. This includes parents, teachers, influencers, or even friends.

4. Humanistic:

The humanistic theory approach engages social skills, feelings, intellect, artistic skills, practical skills, and
more as part of their education. Self-esteem, goals, and full autonomy are key learning elements in the
humanistic learning theory.

5. Motivational interviewing:

Motivational interviewing may also be beneficial when supporting youth involved with child welfare who
are exhibiting negative behaviors. Adolescents often feel they are being judged or told what to do by
providers, which is not effective.

Motivational interviewing is a counseling method that helps people resolve ambivalent feelings and
insecurities to find the internal motivation they need to change their behavior. It is a practical, empathetic,
and short-term process that takes into consideration how difficult it is to make life change.
