Case Study
1- It is not an ethical practice for a bookstore owner to go and purchase the book that
has been written on it by the manufacturer that they are not for sale. Although the
dilemma is that the person to whom the book is actually sent to by the manufacturer if
that person wants to sell the book what should the bookstore owner do? In this case it
is also the responsibility of the bookstore owner to not allow such books to be sold or
purchased through their medium. There is also another example of malpractice which
is when bookstore owners sell pirated copies of a book. Even though the buyer is
demanding for the product and there will always be buyers for anything pirated or
illegal it is the ethical responsibility of a seller to not sell any product that is not made
for reselling
2- First of all the seller should not be selling the books that have it written on them that
they are not for resale and that they are given for free to the professors. Secondly to
hide that information from the buyers mean that even buyers do not find it ethical to
purchase such books. If the buyer is also doing malpractice that is another scenario
but in this scenario the buyers are being lied to and the purchase decision they are
making is because they are being kept in the dark. No buyer would want to be tricked
into making an illegal purchase decision. Although legally it should not be an issue
but morally in most societies purchase decisions like these are thought to be morally
corrupt. The customer in this case would be completely innocent and the
responsibility of upholding the ethics lies on seller.
3- This whole process has been one whole chain of deceiving and malpractice from each
and every person. When a professor is receiving the book they are supposed to teach
their students from that book and to ask the students to purchase the book. They are
supposed to be the role model for their kids and be the most ethical person in the class
room. It should not be morally acceptable to for them to sell the books that are not for
sale. Even though in Pakistan people do sell the books to old book center and those
books often are not bought by them but they are able to go and sell them. If the book
is sold as completely new into the market from the tag of "not to be sold" is removed,
that will be a much bigger ethical issue. In the society where people are living hand to
mouth and are forced to get some earning from wherever they could get they will not
think of this as that big an issue. In this case the professor is selling it to an old book
seller so morally he/she is not feeling bad as they are selling it for a much lower price
and probably not even getting the book's worth. It is the book store owner’s
responsibility at the end of the day to make such these books are not purchased or
sold.
