Topics: “DEVELOPING IN THE LEARNER A LOVE FOR STORY” “DEVELOPING

COMPREHENSION”
Insights or Realizations

The LAC session in the morning introduced a more complex idea on how a teacher
should instill in learners the love for reading. It gave us a refresher on how important
the motive questions are and the motivation itself before introducing a new story to
read.

The afternoon session stressed the nature and importance of reading comprehension, set
the purpose for comprehending text, formulate questions and plan a discussion
covering the various levels of comprehension, and designing activities that develop
reader response.

Lessons Learned

Developing reading comprehension is important for kids because it is a

fundamental skill that forms the basis for all other academic subjects.

Reading exposes children to a wide range of words and phrases,

expanding their vocabulary. The more they read, the more words they
encounter, which enhances their ability to understand and express
themselves in both spoken and written language.

Teachers play a big role in leading our learners to good reading habits
and improving their vocabulary and comprehension skills. Using
various strategies to cater to the different learning needs of our children
will bring positive results in reading.

Exposure to a variety of reading materials contributes to language development by introducing young learners to diverse vocabulary, sentence structures, and textual contexts. This diversity enriches their understanding and use of language, promoting greater linguistic flexibility and competence in both spoken and written communication .

Designing activities that develop reader response is critical for teaching reading comprehension because it encourages students to actively engage with texts and articulate their interpretations. Such activities promote critical thinking, foster personal connections to the material, and help students internalize and reflect on their reading, thus deepening comprehension .

Not developing strong reading comprehension skills in early education can lead to challenges in other academic areas, as comprehension is foundational to understanding and processing information across subjects. Educators can mitigate these risks by implementing targeted interventions, offering remedial support, and fostering an environment that prioritizes skill-building through structured activities and assessments .

Teachers play a crucial role in developing effective reading habits by guiding learners through structured reading experiences, providing engaging and varied reading materials, and creating a supportive environment for discussion and inquiry. Their influence can foster a lifelong appreciation for reading and enhance academic skills .

Vocabulary expansion is vital in developing comprehension skills because a larger vocabulary allows for better understanding and more precise expression in language. Teachers can facilitate vocabulary expansion by exposing students to a variety of texts, encouraging active reading, and integrating vocabulary exercises within reading discussions and activities .

Teachers can effectively motivate students to develop a love for reading by introducing motive questions before reading a new story and providing engaging motivations related to the content. This approach helps in setting a purpose for reading, making the activity more meaningful and engaging for learners .

To address diverse learning needs and improve reading outcomes, teachers should employ strategies such as differentiated instruction, use of multi-modal texts, personalized learning paths, and formative assessments to tailor reading activities to individual skills and interests. This can involve group activities, individual challenges, and using technology to support varied learning styles .

Reading comprehension is crucial for academic success as it forms the foundation for all other academic subjects. Teachers should focus on setting clear comprehension goals, creating discussions at various comprehension levels, and designing activities that elicit active reader responses to address comprehension effectively in the classroom .

Planned discussions at different comprehension levels benefit student understanding by encouraging deeper and more nuanced exploration of texts. These discussions facilitate critical thinking, allow students to express interpretations, and promote an interactive learning environment that increases engagement with the material .

Motive questions play a key role in reading instruction by providing a purpose and context for reading, which in turn enhances engagement and comprehension.
