RAINFALL DATA ANALYSIS OF VSU-AGROMET STATION
INTRODUCTION
Make your own introduction. What is the importance of rainfall analysis in
agriculture, community and in your profession.
Objectives
This laboratory exercise is conducted to understand the behavior of rainfall at the
Visayas State University, Baybay City, Leyte. Specifically, this laboratory exercise aims to:
1. Determine the rainfall pattern of VSU
2. Test the homogeneity of the rainfall data
3. Determine the maximum and minimum rainfall value of an annual series
METHODOLOGY
Collection of Rainfall data
The monthly rainfall data to be used in this laboratory exercise will be acquired from
VSU-Agromet Station. The rainfall data coverage will be from year 2000-2022.
Determination of the VSU rainfall pattern
The monthly rainfall will be graph. Make a regression analysis of the monthly rainfall
data.
Testing the homogeneity of VSU Agromet rainfall data
From the overall (22 years) monthly rainfall data, find the following:
mean
Median
Mode
Standard deviation
Skewness and kurtosis
Fitting of frequency Distributions
A common use of rainfall data is in the assessment of probabilities or return periods
of given rainfall at a given location. Such data can then be used in assessing flood discharges
of given return period through modelling or some empirical system and can thus be applied in
schemes of flood alleviation or forecasting and for the design of bridges and culverts.
The figure below is an example of frequency distributions. The graphs shows the
normal distribution fit for annual maximum of monthly data series and the actual annual
values respectively.
In your data, determine the frequency distribution of the monthly rainfall. Plot the
Statistical Analysis
Basic statistics will be used in the data analyses. These are the following:
Arithmetic mean
Median
Mode
Standard deviation
Skewness and kurtosis
Frequency distribution
Cumulative frequency distribution
