EXERCISE 13:. ACCELERATION DIAGRAMS
1. In the mechanism shown, the crank AB is 75
mm long and rotates uniformly clockwise at 8 rad/s.
Given that BD = DC = DE and BC = 300 mm, draw the
velocity and acceleration diagrams. State the velocity
and acceleration of the pistons at C and E.
(Answer: ve=0.600/s; ve=0.187 Stals;as=4.1 6m/s?a=9. 06/5?)
2, Two links OA and QB tum about fixed parallel axes through © and Q. The ends A and B
are pin-jointed to a connecting link AB. The lengths of the four links are: OA=50 mm;
AB = 175 mm; BQ=100 mm; 0Q= 200 mm. OA tums at a uniform speed of 150 r/min. For the
position of the mechanism in which A and B are on opposite sides of OQ and the angle AOQ is 30°,
find the angular velocity and the angular acceleration of BQ.
(Answer: 8.4 rad/s; 24.5 rad/s?)
3. In the figure, a bar ABC moves with points A and B
guided along the OY and OX axes. AB= 275mm and
BC= 175 mm. For the position shown in which A is 100 mm
from 0, the velocity of A is 0.75 m/s away from O and the
acceleration of A is 3.75 m/s? towards O.
Find the angular velocity and angular acceleration of the bar and the velocity and acceleration of the
point C. Show the directions of these on the diagram.
(Answer: 2.93 rad/s; 11.3 rad/s’; 0.675 m/s; 2.98 m/s’)
4.1n the mechanism shown, the crank AB
rotates in an anticlockwise direction at a
uniform speed of 240 r/min. ‘The crank
Jength AB= 100 mm while the lengths of
BC and BD are 400mm and 500mm
aL
respectively.
Determine, for the position shown, the
instantaneous difference in the velocity of C
‘as compared with that of D and the instantaneous difference in the acceleration of C as compared
with that of D, along their respective axes.
(Answer: 0.54 mis; 35.5 m/s?)Mechanics of Machines Page 175
[Link] instantaneous position of a simple slider
crank mechanism OAB is shown. At this instant, the
velocity and acceleration of point B are both directed
towards the left with magnitudes of 10 m/s and
800 m/s? respectively. OA—[Link] and
AB= 04m,
Using a graphical construction, determine:
(@) The angular velocity of the crank OA,
(6) The velocity of point A relative to point B in magnitude and direction, and
(©) The absolute tangential component of acceleration of point A.
For the same configuration and velocities of the mechanism, what acceleration of point B is needed
in order to reduce the absolute tangential component of acceleration of point A to zero?
(Answer: 120rad/s; 8.6m/s upwards at 80° to horizontal; 272m/s?; 1020m/s*)
6 The arm OQ, of length 3 m, rotates about a fixed point Q with a
constant angular speed of 2 rad/s clockwise, as shown. At the same time,
the circular disc, of radius 2 m, rotates about its centre O at an angular speed
of 3 rad/s anticlockwise and at an angular acceleration of 6 rad/s? clockwise,
both relative to OQ. The two motions occur in the same plane.
Find the absolute acceleration, in magnitude and direction, of the point A
on the periphery of the disc, given that the angle AOQ is 90° at the instant
under consideration. (Answer: 18 mis? to the lefi)
