Pressure Worksheet Ms

This document defines pressure as force per unit area and provides the formula and units for calculating pressure. It then gives examples of calculating the pressure exerted in different scenarios by applying the pressure formula to the given force and area values. These examples include calculating pressure exerted by various forces on different areas, as well as the pressure exerted by objects of different masses on surfaces of varying areas.

Pressure force (in newtons)

(in N/m2) =
area (in m2)

Units: N/m2 (or Pa) or N/cm2

Questions
For each question show all your working clearly.
1. What pressure is exerted by each of the following?
a) A force of 100 N acting on an area of 5 m2.
P = F /A
P = 100 / 5
P = 20 N/m2
b) A force of 20 N acting on an area of 0.5 m2.
P = F /A
P = 20 / 0. 5
P = 40 N/m2
c) A force of 100 N acting on an area of 5 cm2.
P = F /A
P = 100 / 5
P = 20 N/cm2
(optional) P = 20 N/cm2 x 10000 = 200000 N/m2 or 200 kPa
2. The suitcase shown measures
1.0 m  0.5 m  0.2 m.
It has a mass of 10 kg.
a) What is its weight (in newtons)?
W=mxg
W = 10 x 10 = 100 N
b) What is the area of each face of the suitcase?
Top or bottom in postion 1 area = 1.0 x 0.5 = 0.5 m2
Front (with handle) and back in position 1 area = 1.0 x 0.2 = 0.2 m2
Side in postion 1 area = 0.5 x 0.2 = 0.1 m2
d) What is the pressure exerted in position 1?
P=F/A
P = 100 / 0.5
P = 200 Pa
e) What is the pressure exerted in position 2?
P=F/A
P = 100 / 0.2
P = 500 Pa
3. A boy weighs 400 N. The total area of both his shoes
is 200 cm2. He stands on both feet.
a) What is the pressure exerted on the floor, in N/cm2?
P = F /A; P = 400 / 200 = 2 N/cm2
b) What is the pressure exerted on the floor, in N/m2?
Convert area: 200 cm2 = 200 / 10000 = 0.02 m2
P = F/A = 400 / 0.02 = 20000 N/m2
4. A pressure of 10 Pa (10 N/m2) acts on an area of 4 m2. What is the force exerted?
F=PxA
F = 10 x 4 = 40 N
