In previous lesson, you learned about the key concepts and important
competencies required in drafting and cutting pattern of casual apparel. In
this lesson, we will be highlighted with the fabric properties and
characteristics. It includes the knowledge, skills and attitude in identifying
and distinguishing the properties and characteristics of fabrics
Your learning continues as we tackle another lesson which will teach you
another set of competencies, basically on how to prepare materials (fabric).
Moreover, the first lesson in the identified competency covers the different
kinds and characteristics of pastry products. It includes the knowledge,
skills and attitude

In selecting and preparing fabric materials, we should know their
properties and characteristics, since each type of fabrics has its own. These
fabric properties are critical in the selection of appropriate fabrics taking
into consideration the fiber blend, quality, yarn structure, fabric density,
fabric structure and lamination or coating techniques used to optimize
thermo-regulatory comfort of the wearer.
Below are some common types of fabrics with their properties and
characteristics:

1. Cotton fabric is one of the most popular fabrics in the world, and one of
the oldest.
 Properties and characteristics:
• Easy to care for and clean
• Comfortable to wear in all climates
• Breathable and moisture wicking
• Easy to handle and sew
• Takes dye easily

2. Linen fabric is made from flax of plant.

Casual apparel, even in it’s simplicity, needs
trimming in order to be complete. The common
trimmings used in ladies apparel are as follows:

1. Sewing Thread- a mandatory trim for clothing products which ensures

the functional properties of clothing products by securing the seams.

2. Zipper - a device consisting of two flexible

strips of metal or plastic with interlocking
projections closed or opened by pulling a slide
along them, used to fasten garments, bags and
other items
3. Appliqué- a cut out design such as petal,
leaves or figures that is sewn on to or otherwise
applied to a piece of material.

4. Binding- a bias strip used to decorate an

edge.

5. Buttons- pieces of bones, metals, glasses of various shapes having shank

basic ideas about the garment products to customers
like size, fiber composition, brand name, care
instructions, etc.

5 Key Differences Between Trimmings and Accessories

 Trimmings are readily attached with your clothing products but
accessories are not readily attached with your clothing products.
 Trimmings have both functional and non-functional properties but
accessories have only non-functional properties.
 Without trimmings you can’t think about your clothing products but
without accessories you can go through it.
 Trimmings are used to complete your clothing products and
accessories are used to finish and pack your clothing products.
 Button, zipper, rivet, lining, lace etc. are some examples of trimmings
and polybag, safety pin, belts, scotch tape, carton etc. are some
examples of accessories.

you another set of competencies, basically on how to prepare materials
(fabric). Moreover, the next lesson in the identified competency covers the
methods and steps in preparing the fabric. It includes the knowledge, skills
and attitude in identifying and discussing the steps in each method for
straightening, soaking, drying and pressing fabrics.

Body/Texts:
It is essential that you prepare all fabric before cutting it out in order
to achieve a better fit and a more professional look. Different fabrics will
need different care and the label on the fabric bolt will tell you whether the
fabric is washable, dry-cleanable, or if it will shrink. The methods in
preparing the fabrics before cutting are as follows

A. Shrinking and Soaking the Fabric by Laundering and Drying

Most fabrics should be pre-shrunk by laundering and drying to
prevent shrinkage later. Soaking fabric is to immerse fabric in liquid for a
period of time. There are fabrics that do need preshrinking such as silk and
synthetic materials. The steps in shrinking the material are as follows:
 Fold fabric wrong side out enough for the size of the basin.
 Fill basin with enough water to submerge the folded fabric.
 Push deep the fabric completely covered with water.
 Let the cloth soak. The length of time depends on the fabric;

 o Denim can be soaked for hours while wool, cotton, silk and linen
for at least 30 minutes.
 Remove it from the water without wringing.
 Let it dry without folding on the clothesline.
 Press the cloth when completely dry.

B. Straightening the end of fabrics

This process is done by drawing the thread or grain of the material of
the uneven crosswise or lengthwise edges to make it straight. Perform the
following steps to straighten the ends of a fabric.
▪ Clip the selvage on the shortest edge of the fabric.
▪ Pick-up a loose crosswise threads and pull it out slowly.
▪ Pull the thread all the way across the selvage.
▪ Cut along a pulled thread

C. Stretching the grains of fabrics
This is done by pulling the cloth diagonally from one corner to the
opposite corner thus making the lengthwise grain to be at right angle. The
steps in stretching the grain line of fabrics are:
 Grasp the opposite diagonal corners and pull.
 Check to see if the fabric has been straightened.
 Keep on pulling until the selvage comes together.
 Smooth the material on the table and check if the fabric ends lie even.

D. Pressing
Pressing is the process of removing wrinkles and creases in fabric by
using the flat iron. The general rule is to press on the wrong side of the
cloth along the lengthwise grain. Do not go over diagonally because this
will distort the fabric. After steaming the fabric, allow it to dry on a
smooth and flat surface until completely dry. Pressing may enlarge or
shrink the fabric.

 Pressing vs Ironing
The difference between pressing and ironing is entirely in the motion. When
you press, you lift the iron up and down. When you iron, you swipe the iron
across your fabric in a back and forth or forward motion. The infographic
below explains this perfectly.

How to Press Your Fabric

Before Pressing Fabric
Since your fabric is likely brand new and is not cheap, you want to
make sure it is okay to press your fabric before doing so! Run the
following test before putting the hot iron on your whole stash.
 Test Your Iron for Heat
 Test Steam Settings on Your Iron

During Pressing
 Lay your fabric down on your ironing board or on another flat surface
with the wrong side of the fabric facing up.
 Once you have found the proper setting it is time to press your fabric.
 Now take your iron and press down for several seconds on the crease
or wrinkle.
 Do this for the entirety of your fabric’s wrinkles and creases.

Cautions:
 The iron is very hot. Do not touch the silver side or you may
burn. Always hold the iron's handle.
 Keep moving the iron up and down. Do not linger too long, or
you may burn your fabric.
