This simplified manual describes the routine operating procedures for Activion16
multislice CT systems.
For the safety precautions, procedures in emergencies, and other such information, refer
to the operation manuals for the corresponding CT system.
Before using the CT system, be sure to read the operation manuals for the system.

Power ON/Warm-up

This section describes the procedure for turning ON the power and warming up the system.

1. Turning ON the power


1. Turn ON the power switch of the Navibox.

2. An interactive screen or a logon screen is displayed.


When the logon screen is displayed, log on to the system.

3. If X-ray exposure has not been performed for three hours or longer, a warm-up
instruction message is displayed.

* Warm-up is required to protect the X-ray tube.

(1) Confirm that the couch top is fully pulled out from the gantry.
(2) Confirm that nobody is in the scanning room.
(3) Press the scan start key .

Î Warm-up will be completed in approximately 5 minutes.

To stop warm-up (for example, in an emergency), press the abort button .

If more than 80% of the image disk is filled, the following message is displayed.

Although image acquisition is possible even after this message is displayed, delete
unnecessary images before the image disk becomes full. (Refer to P. 56.)

The approximate number of images that can be saved on the image disk is
displayed in the HD-Image field in the Command Box.

Preparation for scanning

This section describes the procedures for entering patient information and setting the
patient.

1. Entering patient information


Always enter the patient ID and name. Perform entry of other items if required.

For an emergency examination, click .

A temporary patient ID and temporary patient name are entered automatically.


In this case, however, be sure to select Utility → Information Change to enter the
correct patient ID and name after the study is completed.

To register an examination appointment


1) Click the button and then select "Register Appointment".

The patient information is added to the list.

To perform a registered examination


1) Click the button and select "Appointment Table".

The examination appointment list is displayed.


2) Click the patient to be examined.
The patient information is displayed in the patient information entry/display
section.

3) Click the button to close the list.

To perform scanning without making an examination appointment, click the


button to close the appointment table.

2. Patient setting
1. Immobilize the patient.

CAUTION: When immobilizing the patient, observe the


precautions described in the operation manual (Basic
Volume) for the CT system. When moving the couch
top, make sure that the patient’s hands do not get
caught.

Use the Up/Down switches ( ) and In/Out switches


( ) to adjust the patient couch position. For scanning, the couch
position must be set so that the external projector beams are aligned with the
center of the region of interest (in the height direction) and with the median line.
For scanoscopy, the beams must be aligned with the scanoscopy start line.
The external projectors can be turned ON by pressing the Projector switch
( ).

To move the patient couch at a high speed, press the FAST switch ( )
while holding down the couch movement switch (IN, OUT, UP, or DOWN)
corresponding to the desired couch movement direction. Press the FREE
switch ( ) to move the couch top manually. At this time, the green lamp on
the switch lights. To cancel manual mode, press the switch again.

Since the interlock mechanism (which disables couch-top IN movement if the


couch height is too low) is disabled when the FREE switch is ON, take special care
to avoid interference between the couch top and the gantry when moving the
couch top.

3. Move the patient to the scan start position.

To set the display of the adjusted couch position to "0", hold down the Couch zero-
clear switch ( ) for more than 2 seconds.

4. When scanning the head, use the tilt switches ( ) to tilt the gantry so
that the beam from the internal projector is aligned with the OM line.
* Gantry tilting is not possible for scanoscopy.

5. Press the projector switch ( ) to turn OFF the projectors.

The beam from the projector is aligned with the center of a group of slices (even
number of slices). Therefore, in S&V or S&S scan mode, the slices away from the
center of the group are not aligned with the projection plane. This must be taken
into consideration when performing patient positioning.
(The figure below shows an example of 4-slice scanning.)

To acquire both frontal and lateral scanograms


Click the right mouse button on the "Scan Mode" menu item and then select "Dual
Scano" from the pull-down menu displayed.
Click the "Scanoscopy angle display diagram" in the patient position confirmation
window and then select the scan angle and order.

To interrupt the first scanoscopy, click , which is displayed during


scanoscopy. The second scanoscopy is started starting from the position at which
the first scanoscopy was interrupted.

5. Completion
1. To end an examination, click .

2. Press the Auto-home switch . The patient couch returns to the home
position.
3. Transfer the patient off the patient couch.

To perform scanning using the same scan conditions


To repeat scanning (e.g. in contrast examinations) using the same scan
conditions, use the Repeat eXam function.

1) Click at the lower right of the window. The scan conditions that were
used in the previously executed plan are displayed in the Repeat eXam
window.

2) Confirm the scan conditions and click . The scan plan window for
the plan is displayed. Perform the same operations as for normal scan
planning. (The scan parameters can also be changed.)
If no scan plan is set, the Scan start key lights.

This is the slice thickness of the reconstructed image. Select the desired
slice thickness from the pull-down menu.

The reconstruction interval can be selected from the pull-down menu.
It is also possible to specify the reconstruction interval by clicking the
"Others" tab and entering a numerical value in increments of 0.1 mm. Note,
however, that if a numerical value that is not one of the reconstruction interval
choices included in the pull-down menu is entered, additional time may be
required for reconstruction. Therefore, selection from the pull-down menu is
recommended.
<3> Image-quality parameter
When this button is clicked, the following window is displayed.
Select the image-quality parameter.

<4> Number of reconstructed images


The number of reconstructed images is automatically calculated and
displayed.

1. Click the image processing button .

2. Select the ROI type.


The CT number measurement procedure is explained using a circular ROI as
an example. Click the circular ROI button.

5. Image enlargement (simple enlargement)


There are two enlargement methods: simple enlargement from images and
zooming reconstruction from raw data. The simple enlargement method is
described below. For the zooming reconstruction method, refer to P. 48.

1. Use the enlargement display tool to adjust the enlargement ratio.

Select the desired magnification ratio by clicking it with the left mouse button.

Simple enlargement/reduction can also be performed by dragging the mouse while
holding down the middle and right mouse buttons simultaneously.
The ratio can be edited using [Menu].

6. Patient information changes


1. Select [[Utility]] in the Command Box and then [[[Link]]].
2. Select the image data file to which a change is to be made and click .

3. Change the related information as required. After entry is completed, be sure


to press [Enter] on the keyboard.

4. After the changes are completed, click .

To change the related information in the raw data


Select [[Utility]] in the Command Box followed by [[Info. Change]] and change the
data file source host to [[Raw data]].
The subsequent procedures are the same as those described above for changing
the related information in the image data.

2. MPR Processing in "Autoview-m"


The procedures for MPR processing in the Autoview-m window are described
below.
This is suitable for MPR processing in routine studies.
1. Select [Utility] → [Autoview-m] to open the Autoview-m window.

2. Click (Directory).

3. Select the desired "Study"/"Series" and then click [OK].


At this time, select volume data for "Series".
"vol." is displayed in the "Comment" column for volume data.

4. Right-click in the frame (A, B, C, D) of the Main tab in which an image is


displayed and select the plane to be generated (sagittal, coronal, or axial) from
the pull-down menu.

The plane position can be moved in the forward/backward (left/right) directions
by operating the mouse wheel.

To change the image thickness


If the image thickness needs to be changed due to excessive noise or for any
other reason, click (Slice Thickness) in the "Tool1" tab. Select the desired
image thickness from the pull-down menu.

To select MIP display mode


When the MPR image is thick, it can be displayed in MIP display mode.
Click (Slab MIP) in the "Tool1" tab and then select [Maximum Value] from the
pull-down menu.

To adjust the plane angle


In the case that the plane is not symmetrical etc., the plane angle can be adjusted
by clicking (Rotate) in the "Tool1" tab and then rotating the plane image.

To save the image


Press the [F7] key on the keyboard. The active image enclosed in a yellow frame
is saved as a screen-save image and added to the "Image selector".

3. Automatic MPR Image Generation


1. Drag the slide bar displayed at the right edge of the image frame.
Move it vertically to set the start position.

Drag this.

2. When the start position has been set, click the right mouse button.
[Start] and [End] are displayed in the pull-down menu. Click [Start].

3. A reference image is displayed next to the active frame (yellow frame).

4. Drag the knob of the slide bar to set the end position.
Click the right mouse button to display the pull-down menu and then click
[End].
It is possible to change the range by dragging the green line segments
displayed on the reference image.

5. When the start position for automatic generation has been set, (Batch
MPR) in the "Tool1" tab is automatically started up.

6. To preset the number of automatically generated images, place a checkmark


for "Lock Number" and enter the number of images to be generated in the

corresponding field. (The image interval varies depending on the image
generation range.)
7. To set the image interval for generated images, place a checkmark for "Lock
Interval" and enter the numerical value for the image interval. (The number of
generated images varies depending on the image generation range.)
8. To check the images that have been set, click [Preview].
9. Click [Save]. The generated MPR images are saved to the "Image Selector".

10. When [Filming] is clicked, a series of processes from saving the MPR images
that have been set to loading the saved images to virtual film are automatically
performed.

4. MPR Processing in "MPR" Mode

When (MPR) is selected, oblique images, curved MPR images, and spine
MPR images can be generated.

1. Click (MPR).

Click (Directory) and then select the desired Study/Series to display the
volume data.
2. A coronal image is displayed in the upper left frame, a sagittal image is
displayed in the lower right frame, and an axial image is displayed in the lower
left frame. The plane that is displayed can be changed by dragging the colored
line segment indicating the position of the corresponding plane, as shown in
the figure below.

5. Oblique Image Generation

1. Click (Oblique) in the "Tool1" tab.

An oblique image is displayed in the lower right frame.

2. A line segment for oblique image generation (oblique cursor) is displayed on


the coronal plane image in the upper left frame.
To move the oblique cursor to the desired frame, double-click the mouse
button inside the target frame.
3. To translate or rotate the oblique cursor, drag the red circle at the center of the
oblique cursor line segment. To generate the image for the desired plane,
move the oblique cursor line segment to the appropriate position by dragging
the red circle.

To generate a double oblique image, double-click the oblique plane and set the
oblique cursor on the oblique image.

6. Curved MPR Image Generation

1. Click (Curved MPR) in the "Tool2" tab.

2. The curved MPR operation window is displayed.

3. Click on the image on which the curve is to be drawn and then draw the curve.
The curved MPR image along the multisegment line is displayed in the Ob
plane frame located at the lower right of the image display area.
Click the points along the target region one by one while changing the target
plane position by rotating the mouse wheel.

To generate oblique MPR images along the vertebral body or intervertebral space,

Use the reset function to return the system to its normal operating status.
* The operating procedures for the reset function differ depending on the abnormality. Refer to

Write down the contents of the jobs indicated as errors in the list and then delete
the jobs. Termination processing can then be performed.
<2> If corrective measure <1> is ineffective, inform your Toshiba service
representative of the contents of the error.

Corrective measures

If the message "Arc occurred in previous scan." is displayed after scanning, the
obtained images are likely to be abnormal. Immediately check the reconstructed
images to see whether there is an abnormality.
* This message indicates that discharge of the X-ray tube occurred during the most recent scan.

If a message indicating that more than 80% of the image disk is filled
is displayed

Corrective measures

If a message indicating that more than 80% of the image disk is filled is displayed,
scanning may be disabled when the remaining disk space is reduced further.
Therefore, provide sufficient free space on the image disk before starting scanning.

and then ON again
If the power of the Navibox has been turned OFF directly

Corrective measures

Wait for several seconds and then turn ON the power of the system. After the power
is turned ON, recovery processing is performed by the software. Wait until recovery
processing is completed.
Recovery processing may take up to 1 hour. If the system is used to examine
emergency patients, another diagnostic modality should be available.
∗ Turn ON the power of the system within 72 hours. Otherwise the image data may
be lost.
* If recovery processing is performed when the power is turned ON, the next shutdown operation
takes longer than normal.

If the switch on the distribution board has been turned OFF

Corrective measures

The action differs depending on the period of time for which the switch on the
distribution board is OFF. Contact your Toshiba service representative. Note the
following points when the power is turned ON.
<1> Confirmation of the air conditioner
In order to prevent system malfunctions due to a rise in the room temperature,
be sure to confirm that the air conditioner is operating.
<2> Warming up of the X-ray detector
When the power of the system remains OFF for a long time, a period of
approximately 2 hours is required for stabilization of the detectors in the CT
system after the power is turned ON. Do not perform scanning during this
period. Perform scanning for the TOS phantom and check that the image has
no artifacts before examination. For this test procedure, refer to subsection 3.1
"Pre-operation check" in the Basic volume.
<3> Recovery processing time
Recovery processing by the software is performed. Wait until recovery
processing is completed. Recovery processing may take up to 1 hour. If the
system is used to examine emergency patients, another diagnostic modality
should be available.
<4> Turn ON the power of the system within 72 hours. Otherwise the image data
may be lost.

If the system has stopped due to a power interruption

Corrective measures

The CT scan system is not provided with a backup battery. Therefore the situation is
the same as in the above case ("If the switch on the distribution board has been
turned OFF"). First, turn OFF the power of the console.
Turn ON the power of the console after the power has returned. Recovery processing
will be performed. Note the following points when the power is turned ON.
<1> Confirmation of the air conditioner
In order to prevent system malfunctions due to a rise in the room temperature,
be sure to confirm that the air conditioner is operating.
<2> Warming up of the X-ray detector
When the power of the system remains OFF for a long time, a period of
approximately 2 hours is required for stabilization of the detectors in the CT
system after the power is turned ON. Do not perform scanning during this
period. Perform scanning for the TOS phantom and check that the image has
no artifacts before examination. For this test procedure, refer to subsection 3.1
"Pre-operation check" in the Basic volume.
