Lesson 4: Area of Circles

Area is the measure of the interior surface of two-dimensional figure. As with the
area of polygons ,the area of a circle is expressed in square units.

Words Model

The area A of a circle equals

the product of π and the

square of the radius r.

Symbols

A=π𝑟 2

Example 1: Find the area of the circle. Use 3.14 for π.Round to the
nearest hundredths if necessary.

A=π𝑟 2 Area of circle

A= (3.14) (14.2)2 Replace r with 14.2 and π with 3.14

A=633.1496 Simplify. This is the approximation area

So the approximation area of the circle is 633.15 square inches

Example 2: Find the area given the diameter

The circular area covered by a lawn sprinkler has a 24-foot diameter.

What is the area of the space covered by the sprinkler ?

Use 3.14 for π .Round to the nearest hundredth if necessary

Step 1:Find the radius of the circle.

Because the diameter of the circle is 24-feet,the radius of the circle is 24 ÷ 2 or 12 -

feet.

Step 2: Calculate the area of the circle

A=π𝑟 2 Area of circle

A= (3.14) (12)2 Replace r with 12 and π with 3.14

A=452.16 Simplify. This is the approximation area

So the approximation area of the circle is 452.16 square feet

Example 3: Calculate the area of the semicircle whose diameter is 12inches.

Solution:

The radius of a semicircle is half of its diameter.

r= 12÷2, then r=6 inches

Lesson 5: Surface Area

The sum of the areas of all the surfaces ,or faces ,of a three dimensional
figure is the surface area.

Example 1: Surface area of rectangular prism.

Find the surface area of the rectangular prism shown below:

Step 1: Find the area of each opposite faces.

In the rectangular prism opposite faces are congruent. To find the area of
each pair of faces the area of one face by two.
Area of sides: 2 (9.6) or 108 𝑐𝑚2 .
Area of top and bottom: 2 (8.6) or 96 𝑐𝑚2
Area of front and back: 2(8.9) or 144 𝑐𝑚2

Step 2: Find the sum of the area of the faces.

108+96+144=264 𝑐𝑚2 .
