LITERATURE HISTORY OF SIKKIM
Most of the writings, from Sikkim, are
mostly in Nepali. The Sikkimese mass
never received British mode of education
or rather there were no schools that could
strictly be called an English medium,
barring a few. Most of the scanty English
writing by the Sikkimese was mainly
restricted to non-fiction books and that
too mainly concentrated on the history or
polity of Sikkim. The Sikkimese wanted
to write their own history first.
One of the first writings in English, also the
first English novel from Sikkim written
exquisitely is a book named “His Majesty’s
Paying Guest” by Lal Bahadur Basnett who
had also written the non-fiction book “A
Short Political History of Sikkim”. The book
was published in 1980 and is now out of
print. An astute politician and also the
former speaker of the Sikkim Legislative
Assembly, this novel is a supposed fiction.
The Story revolves around Dhal Bahadur, a
Magistrate of Sikkim who had been detained
by the Nepalese forces in Nepal. The book is
a total page turner and the language, tenor
and the overall presentation of the book will
keep the reader gripped till the last page.

SOME WELL KNOWN SIKKIM BOOKS ARE :

Requiem for a Himalayan Kingdom :

Requiem for a Himalayan Kingdom tells the
remarkable story of Thondup, the handsome last king
of Sikkim, and his young and beautiful American
queen, Hope Cooke, as they seek support for Sikkim's
independence after their wedding in 1963. Soon,
rumours circulate that Hope was a CIA spy.

Sikkim : A History of intrigue and alliance

Sikkim is an enigma for most, its history and its
1975 merger with India shrouded in mystery. This
book fills the lacunae on both fronts, combining
insights into the erstwhile royal kingdom's unique
history with the intriguing story of how it became
India's twenty-second state. It examines the
often-fraught relationship between its original
inhabitants, the Lepchas, and the Bhutias who
established institutions of religion and
governance
CULTURE AND
TRADITIONS OF SIKKIM
Sikkim is a unique blend of different religion, customs and
traditions of different communities. In the ancient times,
Sikkim was occupied by three tribes; Naong, Chang and the
Mon. But with the course of time, the inhabitants of the
nearby countries became a major inhabitant of the state.
That includes the Lepchas; the clan of Nagas from Tibet, are
one of the tribal groups, the Bhutias; the descendents of
Buddhists from Tibet and the Nepalese; the descendents of
the Hindus from Nepal, which now dominates the
considerable portion of the Sikkim’s population. And hence,
Nepali is the most common among all the languages in
Sikkim. The Tibetan Bhutias, secured their deep rooted ties
to the tradition and belief since the last three centuries they
had been settled in Sikkim. Living together harmoniously,
the Sikkimese Bhutias and Tibetans display the cultural,
social and linguistic commonness in between.
Sonam Lochar : New Year
Sonam Lhosar is a New Year's day
festival of the Hyolmo and Tamang
people of Nepal as well as Sikkim and
Darjeeling regions of India. Sonam
Lochar is an important festival of
Tamang community. The festival falls
in the month January - February
(Magha Sukla Pakcha) Spring season.
Like other communities, the Tamangs
also celebrate their festival with great
joy and religious fervour which lasts
for five to fifteen days from place to
place.
Clothing in Sikkim
The Kho or Bakhu is a traditional dress worn
bland Bhutia, ethnic Sikkimese people of
Sikkim and Nepal. It is a loose, cloak-style
garment that is fastened at the neck on one side
and near the waist with a silk or cotton belt
similar to the Tibetan chuba and to the Ngalop
gho of Bhutan, but sleeveless.
Women wear a silken, full-sleeve blouse called a
honju inside the kho; a loose gown type
garment fastened near the waist, tightened with
a belt. Married women tie a multi-coloured
striped apron of woolen cloth called pangden
around their waist.
Cultural dances and music
This music and folk dances relate to the beauty of the
natural surroundings, depicting the harvest season
and are performed for good luck and prosperity.

“Maruni” – It is one of the oldest and popular group

dance form of the Nepali community, usually
performed by three male dancers and the three
female dancers. The dancers are usually
accompanied by a clown called “Dhatu waray”.
Sometimes Maruni dances are performed to the
accompaniment of the nine instrument orchestra
known as “Nau-mati Baja”.

“Tamamg Selo” - This group dance of Tamang

community is performed to the rhythmic sound of
“Dhamphu”, a musical instrument and hence are
also called “Dhamphu “ dance.
