Pillow Sizes
Queen size pillow
Measures 20 by 30 inches. This is an uncommon size pillow. A queen
size pillow fills a standard-sized pillowcase completely, resulting in a fuller
feeling pillow (as it plumps up the pillow). The added length of queen size
pillows allows it to fit perfectly on a queen size bed. Two queen-sized pillows
are used on a queen size bed.
King size pillow
Measures 20 by 36 inches and are used on both standard king size
beds and California king beds. Two pillows are used, and the extended
length means the pillows fit the mattress exactly.
TYPES OF BED SHEETS
Cotton Sheet https://www.crateandba
rrel.com/washed-
A cotton sheet is considered one of the most popular organic-cotton-grey-

kinds of bedding that is well-liked by many.
The quality of cotton is assessed by thread counts.
Higher thread count represents better quality and higher
price, and the type of cotton that has the highest thread
count is known as the Egyptian cotton.
Polyester Sheet https://www.epichomeid
Polyester sheets are also commonly seen in places
eas.com/polyester-bed-
sheets-pros-cons/
like budget hotels or hostels. As compared to cotton, bed
sheets that are made from polyester do not offer as much
comfort and softness.
In addition, these bedding might not be suitable for
an allergenic person as the material may trigger allergy
causing discomfort.
Lesson 3.2 Correctly Follow Proper Procedures in Conducting Room
Check
Conducting A Room Check
Every morning, the floor/area supervisor, together with the room
attendant assigned in the area shall perform a routine room check in every
guestroom purposely to check:
a. If the room is still occupied;
b. If the beds in the guestrooms were slept on;
c. If there are unregistered joiners who occupied the room;
d. If the guest is out and the room is ready for make-up;
e. If the guest has soiled clothes for laundry;
f. If the guest is in good condition-neither sick nor high in drugs, etc.
Room check must be done with caution and tact. Some guests get very
irritated when someone gets into their room, especially in the morning when
they are still sleeping or just woke up from sleep.
Procedures for Room Check
A. If the room is with Do not Disturb (DND) Sign
1. Look for DND sign on the door knob and do not knock if the sign is on.
2. Call the guest through the phone in the afternoon. Once he/she
responds, identify yourself and apologize for the disturbance. Tell
him/her that you just want to know if he/she wants her room to be
serviced.
“Good afternoon Mr./Ms. _____________. This is
_________ from Housekeeping. I’m sorry for
disturbing you. I just want to know if you want
your room to be made up.”
If the guest is not yet ready for the service,
ask when he wants the service done.
“Would you like us to do the make up later? At
what time sir/ma’am?”
3. Jot down the exact time of request in the productivity report. If it is
beyond your duty hours, endorse the request to the next shift. Use the
logbook.
Note: Before 12:00 noon if the room is still “DND” call the attention of
your supervisor.
Procedures in Conducting Bed Making

procedure of the hotel.
The following is a standard procedure in Bed Making
1. Gather the needed supplies and place them in your cart.
2. Lay down the bed pad on the bed. Place it on top of the mattress. Keep
it smooth-flat over the bed. Secure it by tucking-in the garter on the
corners.
3. From the head side, lay down the first flat sheet on top of the bed pad,
with the right side up. Tuck-in the undersides of the sheet then miter
all corners in such a way that the sheet tightly covers the mattress.
4. Place the second bed sheet on top of the first flat sheet, with the wrong
side up. Smoothen over the leave the edges hanging on the sides.
5. Lay down the blanket on top of the second bed sheet. Let it hang on the
sides. “The top corner, (head portion) must be 8-10 inches away from
the head corner of the bed.
6. Place another flat sheet on top of the blanket with the right side up.
Stretch top corners towards the edge of the head side of the bed.
7. From the head side, fold and tuck in the edges of the last sheet about
8-10 inches from the top edge, same level as the blanket.
“You have an option to fold one corner in a triangular position, ready for
turn down.
8. Tuck in the edges of the 2nd sheet; blanket and 3rd sheet altogether
underneath the head end of the mattress.
9. Miter all corners and tightly secure them into the mattress.
10. Smoothen to make a net appearance.
11. Lay down the bed cover on top of the finished bed. Spread the cover
till it covers the whole bed with edges hanging on the sides.
12. Place the pillow inside a pillowcase and lay it on the head side of the
bed. Bring the corners of the cover from the head side and fold/tuck
them to cover the pillow.
Steps and Procedures in Turn down Service

that the guest will be comfortable before and during sleeping.
The following are procedure in turn down service in guest room:
1. Collect the garbage
2. Clean and Dry the bathroom if used
3. Change the used bath linens
4. Empty and wash all glasses, cutleries etc.
5. Replenished bedroom and bathroom amenities

13. Take a last look before leaving the room to ensure that all are
completely done.
Replace bed linen in accordance with establishment standards and
procedures
The importance of bed making
Making the bed “properly‟ is an extremely important part of servicing
in any room because the bed is often the focal point of the room and one of
the first things in the room that the guest looks at.
The final appearance of the made bed must therefore make the right
impression – neat, tidy, balanced, crisp, clean, attractive and inviting.
Special points in relation to final presentation of the bed can include:
The use of an overlay placed across the end of the bed to enhance eye
appeal
Number of pillows provided – standard procedure may be to place only
one pillow per person on the bed with additional pillows available in
the wardrobe
Use of decorator pillows – to enhance presentation
Placement of the pillows – the property may lie the pillows down,
stand them up or arrange them in some unique way
Number of blankets used – most properties use one blanket on a bed
with extra blankets available in the wardrobe or on request
Placement of a complimentary item on the bed – this may be done as
part of the turndown procedures but may also be a standing
requirement when servicing the room.
When should the bed be stripped?
House policy will dictate what applies and there is usually a connection
between the service provided and the room rate being charged. Options
include:
• Daily – in high-priced rooms, prestige establishments: full change
• Every second or third day – full change
• Change when the condition of the linen requires it – such as situations
where linen is dirty or damaged.
Some properties will replace nothing if the guest is a short stay – which
may be defined as three nights or less. In this case, a guest who is known to
be checking out after three days may not have their bed linen changed even
though standard practice is to change bed linen every two days.
Stripping a bed
The room attendant should follow house procedures to strip a bed. These
can be individual to the property depending on whether one or two staff are
being used, and what linen is involved.
The following is a representative guide of what is involved:
1. Remove bedspread or duvet. – inspect and air or replace as required. All
bedspreads etc. are washed or dry-cleaned periodically.
2. Remove blankets (where provided) - inspect and air or replace as
required. All blankets are washed or dry-cleaned periodically.
3. Remove pillowcases – place into soiled linen bag. Inspect pillow and
pillow protectors to determine if they require attention or replacement.
4. Remove sheets - place into soiled linen bag.
5. Check mattress protector – spot clean as necessary or replace if required
due to staining or damage.
6. Inspect blanket – safety check and for signs of staining. Replace as per
house protocols. Items that have been stripped from the bed should not
be placed on the floor.
Damaged or soiled bed items
• When damaged items are found they must be replaced, with the damaged
either forwarded to the appropriate department for repair or by notifying
the appropriate person so that they can pick it up.
• If damage appears intentional contact your supervisor so that a decision
can be made about charging the guest for the damage.
• There are many approaches taken by different establishments to the
removal of stains in guest rooms.
• Some venues will ask you to identify what the stain is and follow their
established guidelines for stain removal. Other establishments will ask
you to involve the Head Housekeeper and obtain their advice about what
to do.
Remaking bed with fresh linen
As with stripping of beds, individual properties have their own
standards, procedures and requirements for making beds.
Making beds is a common activity that needs to be practiced and
undertaken with great care as many injuries have resulted from moving
the bed to make it.
Activity 3. “Tell Me How?”
