Assignment two
Q1
The initial knowledge I had about the module at the beginning of the semester was that we
are going to be given a project that will be used as test, whether we understood the content
we were taught. I taught we only had Theory in design and designing I never taught we had
calculations and other staff. I expected that after we design, we are going to do 3D printing of
our design also there is going to be a presentation of the model itself.
Q2
7 learning outcomes are as follows,
2.1 The design problem is formulated to satisfy user needs, applicable standards, codes of
practice and legislation.
2.2 The design process is planned and managed to focus on important issues and recognizes
and deals with
constraints.
2.3 Knowledge, information and resources are acquired and evaluated in order to apply
appropriate principles and design tools to provide a workable solution.
2.4 Design tasks are performed including analysis, quantitative modelling and optimisation of
the product, system or process subject to the relevant premises, assumptions, constraints and
restrictions.
2.5 Alternatives are evaluated for implementation and a preferred solution is selected based
on techno-economic
analysis and judgement.
2.6 The selected design is assessed in terms of the social, economic, legal, health, safety, and
environmental impact and benefits.
2.7 The design logic and relevant information is communicated in a technical report.
These learning outcomes from the semester project aligns with the graduate attribute 3, which
follow ECSA regulation; Engineering Design in which should be followed and achieved for
effective design project.
Q3
The three major constrains of our design, first one was that the safety factor must not exceed
three. We tried to meet this constrain by doing stress analysis on our final model by applying
different external forces so that we meet this safety factor of three. We applied a force of
17000N our scissor lift and we got a safety factor of 2.7 which was suitable for our design
because its less than 3. Secondly one of our limitations was that the cost must not exceed
R15000. We achieved this limitation by choosing the perfect material for our design but at a
lower cost. Lastly it was expected that the load must not exceed the rated loaded of the lifting
platform, for this constrain we placed a board on the scissor lift that states that the weight
must not exceed 5000kg but will also had a senser device in our scissor lift that scans the
amount o weight. If it exceeds the minimum than it will not move up.
