KIP Color Advanced/Pro
Introduction
KIP Color software provides a comprehensive suite of high resolution mono/color copying & scan to file
applications for use at a PC workstation. KIP Color Pro features professional grade imaging feature set with
automatic modes and fine controls for all original types. KIP Color Pro software provides advanced color
management features, image editing capabilities, paneling of images for outdoor graphics, nesting of images
for optimum media usage and much more. A suite of image editing and manipulation tools allow you to adjust
margins, scale and orientation, or make on-the-fly alterations to image content.
System Requirements
For KIP Color [Link] we recommend:
Note: screen resolution must be set to at least 1280 x 800 or above to view KIP Color Pro appropriately. If a lower
resolution is used the bottom tool/button bar (Copy/Reprint/Load/Save/Collate/Reset/Exit) will not be shown. In this
instance the “Auto-hide the Taskbar” option in Windows can be enabled to be able to see these buttons.
Hardware Requirements
To connect your scanner you will need:
a USB Port (KIP TruSpeed with KIP 2300 scanner requireds PCIx port)
a TCP/IP LAN connection ( 100 / 1000 )
Operating Systems
We recommend Windows 7. Please take notice of your hardware specifications as compatibility with certain
operating systems might be restricted.

Installation
Installation of the Program
The hardlock drivers are installed during the program installation. In order to avoid installation problems, plug in the Hardlock upon or
after installation. We recommend plugging in the dongle upon software installation.
Insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive and exit all applications. If Autostart is activated in your operating system, the installation
program is started automatically. If this function is deactivated, start the file [Link] from the installation CD.
Select the language in which you want to work with your software.
A setup dialog appears on screen, followed by the welcome dialog.
Then choose the product to install: you may select among K I P C O L O R , K I P T W A I N and O U T P U T S U B S Y S T E M .
Then choose the installation destination location on your system. Enter the folder you want to install or accept the default. If you are
not sure what to choose, do not change the location!
Then select a setup type by activating the corresponding radio button. You can select among T Y P I C A L , C O M P A C T and C U S T O M .
If you have opted for the custom setup, you will be prompted to select the components you want to install.
Click F I N I S H to complete the setup Program.
You will be prompted to select and activate the subsystem and remote scanner. Refer to § O U T P U T S U B S Y S T E M and § R E M O T E
SCANNER.
Now you can start the software from the desktop with the program icon and from the start menu.
Make sure that the Windows user accounts have full access to the parameters folder. To get to this folder, follow
the app_data symbolic link in the installation folder. Usually, parameters folders are set under “C:\Documents and
Settings\All Users\Application Data\KIP”. To be granted further rights, please ask your system administrator.
If you have a USB dongle, put it on after installing the software. A driver will automatically be installed.

Keycode Entry
At first start, the software runs in demo mode. Some features are restricted in demo mode. You have to license your software to
enable all functions. The keycode you need for licensing your software is part of your software package and consists of letters,
numbers and special characters. You can enter your keycode manually or by scanning a keycode target.
If you choose to enter the keycode manually, bear in mind it is case sensitive. The fonts will be red until the code is complete and
error-free. The speed button O K will be eventually activated.
If you want to enter the keycode with a keycode target instead of a keycode, firstly click S C A N T A R G E T in the K E Y C O D E E N T R Y
window. Then place the target with the arrow pointing to the scanner and click on S C A N T A R G E T . If the target is obliquely positioned
in the scanner, an error message appears and the registration has to be repeated. A gray button means the connection with the
scanner has not been effected yet. In this case you will have to enter the keycode manually.
The keycode target is always black and white and can thus be sent by fax. However, the dark margins of a fax may disrupt the
reading of the keycode target. Should that occur, cut the paper margins along the marked lines and repeat the process.
Be aware: you need a keycode corresponding to the versions of your software and dongle. If you do not enter the right keycode, you
may not be able to use all functionalities. The necessary details are given in the window K E Y C O D E E N T R Y .
Configuration
The next step after licensing the software is to configure your scanners and printers and calibrate your system. The window
H A R D W A R E will appear automatically at first start. Later on, go to C O N F I G U R A T I O N H A R D W A R E of the KIP Color main screens
menu to open the window.

If a scanner is already connected to your system, its name appears in the upper field. To configure the scanner, please click the LED-
icon. The color of the LED-icon shows the current status of the scanner:
• No response
• Warming up
• Error
• Operational (a light green tone indicates that the document is being transported back)
You get to the dialog for scanner configuration via the LED. Configuration settings are device-dependent.
Tab ICC
ICC profiles can be made with special software or are delivered by the scanner’s manufacturer. Please copy these data in the ICC
folder of the KIP program. In the tab I C C P R O F I L E , select data for your profiles.

Printer Installation
Copy profile for the Copy mode: scanner, printer and medium are calibrated for the selected print mode.
RIP profile for the Import mode: printer and medium are calibrated for the selected print mode.
Highlight a printer in the field A V A I L A B L E P R I N T E R S and click on the red arrow button. Alternatively, you can double-click on the
printer. This opens the wizard that will guide you step by step through the configuration and calibration of your printer.
The software contains profile libraries for some printers and media. You can import these libraries as described under
LIBRARY IMPORT. The calibration is carried out within seconds and you can start printing with your RIP system. Copy-
profiles are created with the connected scanner.
You can print targets for RIP profiles to calibrate your system individually with a photospectrometer. Please ask your
dealer for more details.
If you have a scanner supported by the software, you will be able to print targets on the printer and scan them in.
Profiles are created for the Copy and RIP modes. We recommend you use a spectrophotometer. KIP always
makes RIP profiles with a spectrophotometer.

Without a checkmark at this option pictures are put out with their standard rotation determined by the document.
If you check this option, you may choose among different rotations-types to be found in the drop down list.
When using A U T O M A T I C ( P A P E R S A V E ), the copy will be rotated so that paper can be saved during output.
If you want the output to be rotated without paper-save function, select a rotation degree. They are arranged clockwise.
Alignment
Select the corresponding radio buttons if you want to have a L E F T or R I G H T O F F S E T on your print out. Alter the size of the
offset to determine the distance between the paper side’s border and image. Select the C E N T E R E D -radio button to set the
image to the central position instead.
Rollwidth tolerance
If you want to allow print sizes that exceed the print width of your printer, you may define a new tolerated width. Please bear in
mind that this may cause a loss of certain areas of the image (especially at the width borders).
Technical Label
This option will cause an appearance of a label on each copy. Labels are shown close to the copy and inform about various
settings.
You can determine which piece of information the standard label will contain by checking the corresponding boxes.
As the calibration is media-dependent, you have to put in the paper types and ink types set in the printer. Printers can be
equipped with different numbers of paper rolls.
If you do not use original media, edit the medium/media you use via E D I T M E D I A . This is important as the color
profiles provided by KIP are made for original media only.
You get to this dialog automatically with the configuration Wizard, but also from the H A R D W A R E window when you open the
context menu of an installed printer and select P R I N T E R C O N F I G U R A T I O N D E F I N E M E D I A L I S T , or when you click the
button E D I T M E D I A in the configuration dialog C O N F I G U R A T I O N / L O A D E D C O N S U M A B L E S .
Select the paper types you want to work with. If you do not use original paper or other original media from the manufacturer,
define your own media: check the box " U S E R D E F I N E D 1 " , open the context menu, Highlight O P T I O N S and define the
medium you use.
You may need to put in the paper type loaded in the printer. CANON printers often make this entry necessary. Enter the paper
type according to the specifications of the media or printer manufacturer. Wrong printer or software settings can lead to loss of
quality!
To get the list of all medium types and be able to edit user-defined media, click S H O W A L L . To edit your own media, check a
box U S E R D E F I N E D , select O P T I O N S in the context menu and enter the necessary settings.

Media calibrations for the copy mode are created and displayed in this window. Media calibrations apply to the selected
medium and print mode and are a set of color and, when necessary, gray calibrations, ink-limit and gamma settings, length
and width corrections.
The medium displayed in the calibration window is that one you set in the window C O N F I G U R A T I O N / L O A D E D
CONSUMABLES.
As a default, the program only displays the print modes recommended by KIP. If you want to calibrate further modes, click the
button E X P E R T to get the list of all available print modes.
The options available in this dialog are described under OPTIONS IN THE CALIBRATION DIALOG FOR COPY AND RIP.
When a profile has been successfully applied to the selected print mode, the date of creation appears after the medium name.
Library Import
The software contains profile libraries of calibrations applicable to most printers and common media. Load the appropriate
libraries by clicking I M P O R T L I B R A R Y and the corresponding printer, and select the desired filters. Confirm with O K . These
calibration targets presuppose the use of original media with your printer.

Export to Library
If you highlight a calibrated printer and click E X P O R T TO L I B R A R Y , a profile will be generated with the printer-specific filters.
Do not forget that some combinations of ink type and print media may require some drying time!
Please cut the targets at the trim lines so that they are hardly visible. Do not cut off the white frame. You can then scan the
targets in any order. Insert the target into the scanner with the arrow pointing towards the device and click on S C A N
TARGET.
After a successful calibration, the date of calibration appears in the window behind the selected combination. Repeat
the process with all targets.
Click on N E X T to get to the RIP calibration. If there is no N E X T button, but one F I N I S H , at least one RIP calibration has
been done and the wizard can be closed.
You can calibrate further RIP modes by selecting the corresponding dialog.

Please consider that the included profile libraries are made for original media from the printer's
manufacturer. If you use different media or feel the quality of the print is not satisfying, please read on in
chapter EDIT MEDIA PARAMTERS before proceeding with the calibration.
Export to Library
You can save single or all RIP profiles applying to one given printer type.
Download Libraries
If you need libraries, you will be able to download some from the KIP Web site. Follow the hints online to select and download

Measure Target
Scan the targets with your scanner or spectrophotometer. If you use a scanner or a GretagMacbeth ICColor, the targets will be
automatically assigned to their corresponding print modes. That way, there is no defined order for scanning the targets.
Some spectrophotometers may not assign targets to their print modes. In that case, you will be prompted to give in the 6
figures you find on the left at the bottom of the targets.
Some combinations of ink and medium may require some extra drying time!
When you right-click on the quality settings, the following dialog opens:

Media parameters should be edited in the order listed below. However, not all steps may be necessary.
1. Define Ink-limit
2. Define Gamma
3. Make grayscale calibration
4. Linearization
Print a test page via P R I N T TEST SHEET. Adjust the ink-limit until all gray areas in the lower part are clearly visible. The gray
areas should not fade out.
Change the Gamma value until, in the upper part of the print, the brightness of 50% Gray is exactly in the middle of the range
between 100% White and 100% Black.
To check the settings, print a scanner-calibration-target and look at the colors. If the colors fade out, or if you can see color
droplets, please reduce the ink-limit value via E D I T M E D I A P A R A M E T E R S . Then, print a new target and check the colors.
2 No Black Ink
When available, this option allows you to print without black ink. This option is possible for various printer types and media
(e.g. glossy paper) as some ink types do not dry on certain media.

Cost Tracking
Coster tracker is an important tool for billing copies or making statistics.
When C O S T T R A C K I N G is activated, the most important data will be saved in a log file, which can be renamed under F I L E N A M E .
This data can be encrypted and easily exported to Excel to be reprocessed. The Excel file will be stored in the same folder as the
account log file. For the processing of Excel spreadsheets, Excel must be installed on your PC! An arbitrary number of customer
names can be entered for later billing. Depending on how the data is to be reprocessed, we recommend opening several log files,
e.g. one per day or per month or until the next billing date.
User Administration
Please note that, after installation, a user with the symbolic name "_"
is logged on with all administrators’ rights. You will be prompted to
replace this user key with your own account. Each user key requires

Scan Preview
The preview has to be recalculated as soon as sizes are changed in the tab G E N E R A L or if you use a new original.
Select an Area
An arbitrary area can be defined from the preview: this is the “AOI” or area of interest. The size of the defined area is entered as
the C O P Y S I Z E in the tab G E N E R A L . To set an area of interest, draw a rectangle around the desired section, keeping the left
mouse button pressed.
The AOI can be enlarged or reduced in any direction. To do this, move the mouse pointer to an edge of the rectangle so that a
double-arrow appears. Move this arrow in the height or width.
To move the AOI to a new position, click into the AOI and move it, keeping the left mouse button pressed.

Prints
This is a universal automatic mode for different mixed originals such as brochures with photos and text. The black point is set
lower than in the maps mode in order to prevent distortions. As a consequence, text will be less dark.
Maps
This mode is best suited for maps with rastered areas of color and text (without pictures). Good text reproduction is achieved
through a high black point correction.
Photos
We recommend this setting for photographic originals. Using this automatic mode, a careful black and white point correction is
set. The picture will not be edited with sharpeners or softeners.
Lineart Color
Apply this mode to pure lineart (technical drawings) for an accurate reproduction of edge sharpness.
CAD-Plots
This filter is best suited for originals that have been printed on an inkjet printer.

RENDERING INTENT
In general, actual device gamuts will not be large enough to reproduce the desired color appearances communicated by the PCS
values. Four rendering intents (gamut mapping styles) are provided to address this problem. Each one represents a different
compromise. The colorimetric rendering intents operate on measurement-based colorimetric values... The other rendering intents
operate on colorimetric values which are corrected in an as-needed fashion to account for any differences between devices,
media, and viewing conditions.
PERCEPTUAL
The exact gamut mapping of the perceptual intent is vendor specific and involves compromises such as trading off
preservation of contrast in order to preserve detail throughout the tonal range. It is useful for general reproduction of images,
particularly pictorial or photographic-type images.
R E L A T I V E (Colormetric Intent)
This intent re-scales the in-gamut, tristimulus values such that
the white point of the actual medium is mapped to the PCS white
point (for either input or output). It is useful for colors that have
already been mapped to a medium with a smaller gamut than
the reference medium (and therefore need no further
compression).
SATURATION
This intent sets brighter colors by neglecting the color fidelity.
A B S O L U T E (Colormetric Intent)
For this intent, the tristimulus values of the in-gamut colors are
unchanged. It is useful for spot colors and when simulating one
medium on another (proofing).
CMYK Direct
(only in RIP mode)
With Color Management off you can use CMYK direct. For CMYK files the values will be directly given to the printer. For RGB files

If you want the output to be rotated without paper-save function, put in a rotation degree.
R O T A T E is disabled if you have used the automatic size recognition for scanning or if you work with an anisotropic printer.
Tab Paneling
For large format outputs, such as posters or presentations for fairs and exhibitions, it is
necessary to divide the copy into several different panels. As soon as the required
output size exceeds the maximum print width or the maximum print length of a printer,
certain settings become necessary under P A N E L I N G .
If you used the automatic length recognition when scanning, a paneling with
respect to height is not possible.
Calculate
Paneling is designed for easy use: KIP Color calculates the number and maximum
size of the panels that will fit on the paper width, including the overlap (if selected).
Simply click C A L C U L A T E . The maximum print width of the selected printer is then
entered under S I Z E G I V E N , while the number of panels is displayed under C O U N T
GIVEN.
If you change the output size or the output device in the main window, you must click on the button C A L C U L A T E once again to
recalculate the size and number of panels. The values are then immediately updated. Of course, you may change the suggested
values manually.

Filter Editor
Function and Structure of the Filter Editor
The filter editor is an indispensable tool which will help you achieve optimal results even with difficult originals. The filter editor will
give you a preview of the copy on the screen. Each altered setting -e.g. black and white point correction- is immediately displayed on
the screen.
In this way unnecessary test prints are avoided, since the optimal parameters can be determined before the output is done. We
recommend you save the settings made for difficult originals as filters for similar documents.
You will start with the simple version of the filter editor. To open the expert level, just press the button E X P E R T at the bottom part of
the filter editor window. If you want to activate the expert mode as your default filter editor, erase the checkmark at S I M P L E F I L T E R
E D I T O R to be found at P R E F E R E N C E S (menu bar (tab) G E N E R A L ).
Depending on the selected color mode and on the color management, you will be able to use different editors:
You will get to the filter editor by clicking the button N E W or C H A N G E . After having started the filter editor, the name of the
loaded filter or “N E W F I L T E R ” is displayed on the upper boundary of the window.
There are always these options/buttons available when working with the filter editor window:
Furthermore there is always the option M E N U available located in the menu bar of the filter editor window. You may use it to manage
filter edits (save, load, confirm) or just leave the filter editor.
Preview
If you click on the menu field P R E V I E W , the complete original is scanned with low resolution and directly displayed in the overview
window. Simultaneously a small frame is superimposed in the O V E R V I E W window. This frame can be moved with the left mouse
button. The image section included in the small frame is shown enlarged in the zoom. The zoom window shows the original on the
left, the effect of the filter on the right in a split screen. The overview and the zoom windows can arbitrarily be enlarged or reduced
and placed anywhere on the screen.
The results of your settings are immediately shown in the preview. This way, it becomes easier to find optimal settings without test
prints.

Example: you have scanned a newspaper page. The scanner read the black of the letters as dark gray with red tones. If a filter
is calculated for this document without C O N S I D E R C H R O M A , the letters will be printed in black with red tones, whereas the
option C O N S I D E R C H R O M A will ensure the printing of the letters in black.
If you want to edit the values of the adaptive filter, please click on the button M A K E S T A T I C .

You can directly change the values.
Click on the black picker and draw a box around the black area of the image that is to serve as a reference. The average color

White Point
Adaptive
The adaptive values cannot be edited and are calculated for every file.
If the white values contain colors, please check the box C O N S I D E R C H R O M A to remove the colors.
Example: you have scanned a newspaper page. The scanner read white as yellowish. If a filter is calculated for this document
without C O N S I D E R C H R O M A , the white of the newspaper will be printed in yellow, whereas the option C O N S I D E R C H R O M A
ensures the output will be white.
If you want to edit the values of the adaptive filter, please click on the button M A K E S T A T I C .
Static
You can directly change the values.
Click at the white picker and draw a box around the white area of the image that is to serve as a reference. The average color
value of the selected area will be assigned to the white point and automatically corrected.
If you right-click in the histogram, all colors bars will be set at a given value. If you right-click on the single color bars, you can
set the values individually.
The black enhancement enables you to edit black values. Setting the slider to the left will cause a lighter black value, whereas
pulling it to the right will result in darker black. You may finetune the values by setting up a clipping at C L I P . The value set at
C L I P will determine the new base black value depending on the black value set in B L A C K E N H A N C E M E N T . This way, you can
e.g. gain back deep black values for certain parts of the image after having set a rather light black value in the B L A C K
E N H A N C E M E N T . The clipping feature is especially helpful to improve the visibility of black text and letter elements of the
picture, whereas an appropriate setting at B L A C K E N H A N C E M E N T will cause other black values to diminish and thus draw
less visual attention away from the text elements.
Likewise, to tune contrast values (e.g. in order to finetune text visibility) you may additionally reduce or improve the
background contrast: set the slider to the right to set a brighter contrast, set it to the left to determine a low key contrast. Again,
finetune the contrast settings by using the C L I P slidebar. The higher the clipping value, the more image’s grey-to-white-values
will become brighter and whiter.
Tick the box P R E S E R V E C O L O R S A T U R A T I O N to keep Color Saturation unaffected by any changes to Black and White
Point.

You can select between the color spaces R G B (Red, Green, Blue) and C MY (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow). If you move all sliders
at once, you will change the brightness of the image as a whole.
If you choose R G B , you will be able to alter the red, green and blue shifts. If your picture has, say, red shifts, you will
neutralize this effect by reducing the gamma value of the red color bar.
If you choose C MY , you will be able to alter the cyan, magenta and yellow values. If your picture has, say, cyan shifts, you will
neutralize this effect by reducing the gamma value of the cyan color bar.

Special Filter
Adaptive Sharpness
This option reduces print raster. By combining the smoothening and sharpening
filters, A D A P T I V E S H A R P N E S S softens the image sections with constant colors in
order to make raster virtually invisible. Object edges and text remain sharp and can
even be sharpened.
You can enter values for the L E V E L and L I M I T directly in the entry fields or move
the white squares corresponding to the “coordinates” of the filters in the diagram.
Level
You can set the level, or intensity, of the sharpening and softening filters
individually. Picture sections with poor contrast or image backgrounds are edited
with the lower entry field, whereas the highly contrasted sections, such as text and
edges, are edited with the upper field.
0: max. smoothing
100: max. sharpening
Default value: 0 - 100
Limit
You can determine, for each filter, up to which or from which value they will work. The left entry field works in combination with
the smoothing filter (lower field under L E V E L ); the right one with the sharpening filter. Picture sections whose contrast is under
the value set in the left field will be smoothened; sections with contrast values greater than the figure entered in the left field
will be sharpened. Pictures sections with contrast values between those of the left and right fields will be sharpened or
softened according to their contrast.
0: min. contrast
100: max. contrast
Default value: 30 - 50
undesirable side-effects: text and edges remain sharp and can even be sharpened.
A D A P T I V E S H A R P N E S S is made of two unique filters, both possessing the features of S H A R P and S M O O T H , whose intensity
can be adjusted in the entry fields under L E V E L . The upper entry field controls foreground objects that should be enhanced,
such as text, whereas the lower field is for image backgrounds needing smoothing. With both filters, you will reach a maximum
smoothing effect at 0 and a maximum sharpening effect at 100.
L I M I T works as a threshold. The figures entered on the abscissa are contrast values. 0 stands for minimum contrast, 100 for
maximum contrast. The left entry field is dedicated to the background and affects the smoothing filter, which will be applied up
to the value entered. In the right entry field, corresponding to foreground objects and the sharpening filter, enter a value from
which the sharpening filter will be applied. Both smoothing and sharpening filters will be applied to values between those two
entered as L I M I T .
Move the boxes to the extreme right in the histogram, at about the middle in the height.
You will see raster pattern in the zoom window. Move the left or lower box towards the bottom of the histogram until the raster
pattern disappears. Usually, the box must be moved almost to the base of the histogram.

Black/White Points
For an optimal luminance adjustment the black and white points can be set. The contrast filters determine two points for each
color channel (red, green, and blue). Each color value below the first point will be interpreted as black; similarly, each color
value above the second point is seen as white to ensure that the scanned original will contain a "pure" white without a gray
haze and a "pure" black with full saturation. The values ranging between the two points will be transformed to the full contrast
range of 0% to 100 % to guarantee an optimal color reproduction.

Threshold
Manual
When this option is activated, the scanner reads gray tones as follows: gray tones under the threshold turn to 0 (black), while
all other gray tones turn to 1 (white). This mode suits lineart best. It should not be applied to photographs.
We recommend an ink limit of 100% in this mode (see § CALIBRATION).
Adaptive
Contrary to the manual threshold, where the value is the same for the whole image, the adaptive threshold can change from
line to line according to the content of the image. With V A R I A B I L I T Y you control how fast the threshold can change.
B A C K G R O U N D L E V E L controls the grade of the background removal.

This option removes black pixels in black & white mode, for example from scans of murky originals. The filter searches for
groups of black pixels and converts them into white. Small-sized pixel groups, such as those forming punctuation dots, are
kept.
A L L P I X E L N E I G H B O R S - Pixels are connected neighbors when there is a series of 8 (instead of 4) adjacent pixels,
i.e. in addition to pixels of the same row or column, the diagonally-adjacent pixels are considered to be connected.

Rendering Intent
In general, actual device gamuts will not be large enough to reproduce the desired color appearances communicated by the
PCS values. Four rendering intents (gamut mapping styles) are provided to address this problem. Each one represents a
different compromise. The colorimetric rendering intents operate on measurement-based colorimetric values... The other
rendering intents operate on colorimetric values which are corrected in an as-needed fashion to account for any differences
between devices, media, and viewing conditions.
This intent re-scales the in-gamut, tristimulus values such that the white point of the actual medium is mapped to the PCS
white point (for either input or output). It is useful for colors that have already been mapped to a medium with a smaller
gamut than the reference medium (and therefore need no further compression).
SATURATION
This intent sets brighter colors by neglecting the color fidelity.
A B S O L U T E (Colormetric Intent)
For this intent, the tristimulus values of the in-gamut colors are unchanged. It is useful for spot colors and when simulating
one medium on another (proofing).

you must click on the button C A L C U L A T E once again to recalculate the size and number of panels. The values are then
immediately updated. Of course, you may change the suggested values manually.
Example:
The poster you want to print is supposed to be 4000 mm wide but the maximum output width of the printer is
900 mm.
* If you enter "900 mm" under S I Z E G I V E N (width), four 900 mm wide panels and a 400 mm wide one will be printed.
* If you enter "5" under C O U N T G I V E N , five 800 mm wide panels will be printed.

RENDERING INTENT
In general, actual device gamuts will not be large enough to reproduce the desired color appearances communicated
by the PCS values. Four rendering intents (gamut mapping styles) are provided to address this problem. Each one
represents a different compromise. The colorimetric rendering intents operate on measurement-based colorimetric

values... The other rendering intents operate on colorimetric values which are corrected in an as-needed fashion to
account for any differences between devices, media, and viewing conditions.
PERCEPTUAL
The exact gamut mapping of the perceptual intent is vendor specific and involves compromises such as trading off
preservation of contrast in order to preserve detail throughout the tonal range. It is useful for general reproduction of
images, particularly pictorial or photographic-type images.
R E L A T I V E (Colormetric Intent)
This intent re-scales the in-gamut, tristimulus values such that the white point of the actual medium is mapped to the
PCS white point (for either input or output). It is useful for colors that have already been mapped to a medium with a
smaller gamut than the reference medium (and therefore need no further compression).
SATURATION
This intent sets brighter colors by neglecting the color fidelity.
A B S O L U T E (Colormetric Intent)
For this intent, the tristimulus values of the in-gamut colors are unchanged. It is useful for spot colors and when
simulating one medium on another (proofing).
Target: Select the target color space and, if need be, the corresponding ICC profile.

The Costtracker tool evaluates the KIP Track log files. To work with the Costtracker, the KIP Track option needs to be activated and
the encryption of files deactivated. For more information on KIP Track, refer to chapter P R E F E R E N C E S .
The costtracker relies on the data the printer returns for the corresponding job.
Preferences
C O S T T R A C K E R F I L E – Select the KIP Track log file. The path has been set in the KIP Track settings.
U N I T – Determine the units used for evaluating costs (length, surface, volume, and currency units), and set the number of decimal
places.
D A T E R A N G E – Select the start and end dates for the evaluation period.
R E F R E S H R A T E – Enter the frequency with which the log file is to be read.
Minus – The medium or printer does not appear in the log file (yet). When necessary, media and printer can be removed from the list
by selecting H I D E U N U S E D E N T R I E S in the context menu.
Asterisk – The medium or printer is in the log file, but does not appear in the evaluation (for example because its date is not within the
evaluation period or because its value is 0).
No sign – The medium or printer appears in the log file.
Depending on the data already entered, the media, printers and printing modes you use will be displayed.
Enter the costs pro square meter pro medium and printer under C O S T to enable the Costtracker to evaluate costs.
