Designing Products from Recyclable Materials

This lesson plan outlines a science lesson for 5th grade students on designing products from local and recyclable solid or liquid materials. The lesson will motivate students with a video and teach them about the 5 R's of waste management - reduce, reuse, recycle, repair, and recover. Students will learn tips for designing useful products and have an activity to complete a crossword puzzle. For assessment, students will write a paragraph explaining the importance of waste management. The lesson aims to teach students how to apply waste management principles to reduce non-biodegradable waste through reusing and recycling materials.

WASTE MANAGEMENT
Binalonan, Pangasinan
First Semester, Academic Year 2022-2023
- refers to the various schemes to manage and dispose of
wastes. It can be by discarding, destroying, processing,
recycling, reusing, or controlling wastes. The prime objective of
waste management is to reduce the amount of unusable
materials and to avert potential health and environmental
hazards
5R’s
REDUCE
- to cut back on the amount of trash we generate
RECYCLE
- turn something old and useless into something new and useful
REUSE
- new ways to use things that otherwise have been thrown out
REPAIR
- To fix something that is broken, damaged, split, or not working
properly.
Example:
Sewing the cut or hole in your pants, leak from faucets, electrical
appliances, and cracks in house walls
RECOVER
- The recovery of waste without any pre- processing
Example:
Waste oils that cannot refined for use in vehicles can use for energy
recovery.

In designing useful products, there are some steps and tips that you may
follow to come up with regarding results of your genuine effort and skills
making new product out of local and used materials.

1. Determine the available local materials that

are largely available at home or your nearby
places and community.
2. Study the properties of these local materials
or used, broken damaged or repairable
materials

3. Create new products that are useful by adding
aesthetic materials
4. Seek help from elders as much as possible for
safeness and enjoy the accompany doing your
activities in reducing, recycling, reusing,
recover, and repair materials to design new
products.

E. Developing Master y Activity 1

(leads to Formative They will be given a criss-cross puzzle
Assessment)
Activity 2
Essay (not more than one paragraph)
What is the importance of waste management in 5r’s?

F. Finding practical Possible waste disposal methods are recycling, composting, incineration,
application of concepts landfills, bioremediation, waste to energy, and waste minimization. As for
in daily lives waste management, it is the measures utilized to manage waste in its entire
life cycle, from waste generation to disposal or recovery.

G. Making generalization Our lesson for today is all about waste management. What are the 5r’s again?
and abstraction about Reuse, reduce, recycle, repair, and recovery. What is reuse? Reduce? Recycle?
the lesson Repair? And how about Recovery?

What are the tips in making/ creating new designs to make new product from

product?

Does proper waste management help our environment? In what way.

V. EVALUATION

Directions:
Fill in the blanks with appropriate word or phrase

Non- Useful Waste
biodegradable

Designing a product out of local_______ solid/liquid materials in making _______ products is an application of_____. With this technique, 5r’s in waste management will also be applied.
Recycling the materials to new product design, reduce waste as much as possible. _____ waste materials such as plastics, metals, cans, and rubbers will be reduced through reusing and ______.

VI. ASSIGNMENT
