General Education Reflection
My journey through General Education Courses has been instrumental in shaping me as a
professional engineer. These courses, spanning a wide range of subjects, have offered me
insights and perspectives that extend beyond the technical aspects of engineering. In this
reflection, I will describe how these courses have equipped me to evaluate and formulate
engineering solutions, encouraging me to think about engineering problems from
multidimensional angles.
One of the most important lessons that I have learned from my general education courses
is the ability to look at engineering problems holistically. In particular, my sociology courses,
Sociology 1 and Sociology 2, have provided me with a deep understanding of human behavior
and societal structures. This knowledge has been invaluable in approaching engineering
problems involving human interaction and societal impact. For instance, when designing a
software system for a diverse user base, I can draw on my understanding of sociological concepts
to ensure that the system is user-friendly and caters to the diverse needs of its users. It has also
helped me in managing and collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary teams, a common
scenario in engineering projects. I have learned to consider not only the technical feasibility of a
solution but also its social and ethical implications.
My general education courses, particularly Microeconomics and Diversity in the Media,
have expanded my horizons beyond the mere technical dimensions of engineering
problem-solving.
Microeconomics has equipped me with insights into the economic factors that influence
decision-making in engineering projects. I now consider the cost-effectiveness of solutions and
how they impact project budgets. Understanding supply and demand dynamics has proven
beneficial in optimizing resource allocation, making my engineering solutions not only
technically sound but also economically feasible.
Diversity in the Media has highlighted the importance of representation and inclusivity in
technology and engineering. In an era where global connectivity is paramount, acknowledging
diverse perspectives and considering them in the design and implementation of engineering
solutions is crucial. Recognizing that media plays a role in shaping societal perceptions, this
course has emphasized the significance of ethical and equitable representation in engineering
products. It has made me more aware of how engineering solutions can impact global and
societal contexts, particularly in promoting inclusivity and social responsibility.
In conclusion, my general education courses have been transformative in my journey as a
professional engineer. They have instilled in me the ability to evaluate and formulate engineering
solutions from a multidimensional perspective. Through these courses, I have learned to
consider the societal, economic, and global impacts of my work, ensuring that my engineering
