This lesson introduces the basic concept of EICAS including operation, control,
and interface.
EICAS displays two types of data, standard and optional, which vary with the
customers requires. This lesson uses all display options to show the capability
of EICAS.
General
Flight Crew Advantages -- EICAS offers improved flight compartment
management by:
-- Improved BITE monitoring and displays.
-- Reducing crew workload through effective monitoring of engine parameters.
-- Displaying COMMUNICATION messages.
-- Displaying system STATUS messages through all phases of flight from
power--up through postflight maintenance.
-- Displaying color--coded ALERT messages (warnings, Cautions, and
Advisories) that communicate both abnormal conditions and their urgency
to the crew.
Only the parameters required to set and monitor engine thrust are displayed full
time. EICAS monitors the remaining parameters and automatically displays
any out of tolerance parameter in a color--coded format.

data for the ground crew. This design allows EICAS to automatically record
subsystem parameters when malfunctions are detected, and to provide reports
and fault histories during BITE mode. Flight or ground crews can also create a
manual recording of subsystem parameters through the use of a single push
button. This eliminates the need for extensive hand recording of malfunctions
and performance data.

EICAS GENERAL OPERATION
Operation.
EICAS is designed to provide automated systems monitoring and data
display for all phases of airplane operation, from power--up through
postflight maintenance. Numerous features are included to minimize
crew workload during both normal and abnormal [Link] EICAS
automatic and manual recording features eliminate the need for hand
recording of systems and performance data.
Other features are included to assure crew awareness of system status
changes.
Normal Sequence.
Operational displays are changed by pressing the STATUS and ENGINE
switches on the display select panel. When the STATUS or ENGINE switch
is pushed a second time, the display reverts to the normal mode (lower screen
blank). When time fuel flow (option) is selected, the lower display is considered
blank even though fuel flow is still displayed.
On the Ground (Preflight).
EICAS operations during a normal flight are shown on the diagram.
At power up, all engine parameters automatically appear, so the crew can
check engine oil quantity before engine start. When the STATUS switch is
pressed, the lower display changes to the status mode for other preflight
checks. After the crew is satisfied with the airplane’s status, pressing the
ENGINE switch will return the secondary engine parameters to the lower
display unit (DU).
Following a satisfactory engine start, the crew may desire to return to the
status mode for control surface checks. The lower display unit is returned
to the normal mode (blank DU), for takeoff, by pressing the STATUS switch
again.

In flight.
If an abnormal condition exists or if component fails in flight, the crew
will be alerted by a “STATUS” cue in the upper left corner of the lower
display. The crew may choose to check the status display to determine
system’s status, and to radio ahead to arrange any required maintenance
actions
On the Ground (Postflight).
Once on the ground, EICAS provides maintenance information to assist the
crew in making logbook entries and to assist the ground crew in
troubleshooting.

EICAS DISPLAY MODES - INTRODUCTION
Description
EICAS provides three modes of display:
--Operational
--Status
--Maintenance
Operational Mode
At power--up, the operational mode displays all engine parameters.
The upper display unit is dedicated to show primary engine parameters
(N1, EGT) and alert and comm messages full--time. The lower display
unit shows secondary engine parameters (N2)
Status Mode
The status mode is selected by a switch on the display select panel and
provides selected sub--system parameters on the lower display unit.
Status messages are also shown in this mode.
Maintenance Mode
The maintenance mode displays are selected by switches on the EICAS
maintenance panel. These displays provide airplane sub--system parameters
and maintenance messages on the lower display unit.

EICAS OPERATIONAL MODE DISPLAYS
Purpose
The operational mode displays those primary and secondary engine
parameters and crew alerts required on the ground and in--flight,
and provides continuous monitoring of airplane and engine systems.
The upper display is dedicated to primary engine parameters,
automatically displayed alert and comm messages for monitoring
by the crew. The lower display is shows secondary engine parameters.
At power up, all engine parameters appear automatically.
Primary Engine Parameters
Primary engine parameters, N1 and EGT, are displayed on the upper
display unit (DU) at all times. The parameters shown are only those
required to set and monitor engine thrust. The primary thrust setting
parameter for the GE engine is N1. N1 is displayed in a digital readout
and also by an analog pointer. EGT is a thrust monitoring parameter.
Secondary Engine Parameters.
The secondary parameters consist of N2, fuel flow, oil pressure, oil
temperature, oil quantity, and vibration. They are displayed for each
engine automatically at power up or, when they are manually selected
for display on the lower DU.
Exceedance Conditions
If any parameter reaches an exceedance condition, EICAS automatically
displays the engine parameters in the exceedance color for fast crew
attention and action. Exceedance color priorities include:
-- White
-- Yellow
-- Red

LEVEL E COMM MEDIUM MESSAGES
AND ASSOCIATED INDICATIONS
Purpose
Comm medium messages alert the crew that a communication function
is required, such as a ground call (from the nose landing gear Call switch)
or similar condition requiring voice communication. The crew responds to the
call using the appropriate system.
Description
Any time a level E comm medium message is generated, it appears at the
bottom of the message field (bottom justified). The messages are white in
color and are preceded by a white bullet.
EICAS sends a chime discrete to the warning unit at the same time it shows
the message, and the warning unit responds with a single high chime in the
flight deck.
NOTE: NOT ALL COMM MESSAGES HAVE ASSOCIATED CHIMES.
Any indicator lights are illuminated by the system providing the input. (i.e.
GROUND CALL lamp is illuminated by the crew call system, not EICAS)
