SS2 First Term Chemistry Practical Exam

The document is an exam for a chemistry practical class. It instructs students to perform a titration experiment involving solutions of an acid and sodium hydroxide. Students are asked to record burette readings, calculate the average volume of acid used, and use the results to determine concentration, molar mass, and relative molar mass. Students are also asked questions about using litmus paper to distinguish between salt solutions, observing changes when adding acid to iron filings, and diagramming the separation of a petrol and water mixture.

CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY SCHOOL,

WUSE II, ABUJA.

FIRST TERM EXAMINATION (2022/2023)

SUBJECT: CHEMISTRY PRACTICAL. CLASS: SS2

NAME: ………………………………. DATE: ……………………. DURATION: 1:30 MINUTES

INSTRUCTION: Answer all the questions in this section

INSTRUCTIONS: Burette readings (initial and final) must be given to two decimal
places. Volume of pipette used MUST also be recorded but no account of experimental
procedure is required. All calculations MUST be done in your answer book and MUST be
concluded to three significant figures.

1. A is a solution containing 6.22g of an acid H2Y per dm3. B is a solution containing

3.90g of sodium hydroxide per dm3.
(a) Put A into the burette and titrate with 20.00cm3 or 25.00cm3 portions of B,
using methyl orange as indicator. Record the volume of the pipette. Tabulate
your burette readings and calculate the average volume of acid used.
[12 marks]
(b) From your results and the information provided, calculate the:
(i) Concentration of B in mol dm-3;
(ii) Concentration of A in mol dm-3;
(iii) Molar mass of H2Y;
(iv) Relative molar mass of Y. [10 marks]

The equation of the reaction is as follows:

H2Y(aq) + 2NaOH(aq) Na2Y(S) + 2H2O(l)

[H=1, Na = 23, Cl = 35.5, O = 16]
