HOMEWORK NO MORE: A POSITION PAPER ON THE

DISADVANTAGES OF REMOVING HOMEWORK

DURING WEEKENDS

I - INTRODUCTION

Homework has been part of the school experience for several decades.

Undoubtedly, there are lectures that are suitable for classroom settings. However, there

are few things that children can learn better at home. "Homework ban" will halt

teachers from giving homework or assignments to students. For many years, this issue

became prominent as its effect would impact the entire growth of students. Some people

may agree with the homework ban policy, and some people may not.

In the United States, according to Reilly (2016), multiple parents react to no-

homework policies for the reason that they are concerned that their children will lose

their educational advantages. Homework is considered essential in enhancing students'

academic skills as it creates healthy learning habits that will support children

throughout their lives. The second reason why homework should not be prohibited is

that it has an additional positive impact on students as they reach adulthood.

Specifically, it would be beneficial for students to gain self-confidence, to become more

responsible and self-sufficient.

In the Philippines, evidence from the Manila Times (2019) has shown that

Filipino students might be less prepared for their higher education or the workforce and

that the country will indeed bear the negative effects of the 'no homework' policy. On the
other hand, homework is an integral part of education, considering that it helps students

to apply what they have learned in class. This one will be achieved in two ways, by

creatively applying educational materials and by providing students with opportunities

to practice the cultivation of healthy working habits and processes. In terms of

practicality, homework allows for "more schooling" than can be crammed into a few

hours of school time. Rather than hindering family bonding through the engagement of

parents or allows parents to be more involved in their children's educational activities.

Local Setting ( Locality )

As this subject continues to expand and presently became arguable, we as a group

oppose the implementation of the "Homework ban." On the grounds that homework

provides students advantages. On the other hand, we notice some adverse effects of the

'Homework ban' when it is implemented, such as results poor academic performance,

loss of academic achievements, loss of interest in engaging with their studies, and failure

to handle time management skills. Thus, the "homework ban" should not be

implemented for the reason that future students are going to be miserable as they do not

even experience homework, which is a way for them to flourish and reach their full

potential.

II – ARGUMENTS AND COUNTERARGUMENTS

The "Homework Ban" should not be implemented, considering it as a way for

teachers and parents to work to improve the academic performance of students.

Specifically, homework helps students to gain self-confidence, become more

accountable and self-sufficient According to Atkinson (n.d.), evidence from scholastic

education, homework not only teaches students how to work independently, but also

teaches them how to take responsibility for their part of the overall education process.

Second, it provides students the opportunity to practice the cultivation of healthy

working habits and processes. In a study of "Why is Homework Important," According

to [Link] (2021), found that homework teaches study habits since students

enter school struggling with their study habits. Through homework, students will realize

the importance of practice.

And lastly, it is a way for students to grow and flourish to reach their full

potential. Students need to understand the significance of hard work and develop ethical

responsibility and self-regulation in order to commit to their projects and to see them

through. It stated that homework could help students develop a desire to succeed where

they'll take with them to college and beyond in a study of "Why is Homework

Important," evidence from ([Link], 2021).

III - CONCLUSION

As a result, based on our thesis statement, it has been stated that there are

reasons for us to debate this 'Homework ban'. Considering this subject proceeds to

extend and directly got to be doubtful, we, as data gatherer, restrict the execution of the

"Homework ban." Since homework gives understudies preferences. On the contrary, we

observe some of the unfavorable impacts of the 'Homework banning' when it is

actualized, such as the result of poor academic performance, loss of academic

achievement, loss of interest in engaging with their studies, and failure to handle time

management skills. In this way, the homework boycott ought to not be actualized for the

reason that future understudies are progressing to be miserable as they do not

encounter homework, which could be a way for them to prosper and reach their full

potential.

We would like to suggest a procedure adopted to deal with this situation. First is

that teacher must lessen their homework in order for the students to comply with it on

time and for them to have time for their family. Next is the homework must contain the

lesson that was done discussed by the teacher. Lastly, the deadlines of that homework

are sufficient enough for submission.
