Anatomy and Function of the Ear

The ear is divided into three main sections - the outer, middle, and inner ear. The outer ear collects sound and channels it through the ear canal. The middle ear contains three small bones that transfer sound from the eardrum to the inner ear. The inner ear is responsible for hearing and balance, and contains the cochlea, which detects sound and sends the information to the brain. Together, these parts work to collect sound waves and transmit information to the brain for processing.

PARTS OF THE

EAR
OBJECTIVE
We will explain how different parts
of the ear help us to hear.
THE EARS
The ears are paired sense
organs, located on each
side of your head. They
are organs of hearing
and balance.
THE EARS
The ear is divided into 3 sections-outer,
middle, and inner ear.

The outer ear consists of the pinna and ear

canal; the middle ear has the ear drum and
small bones; the inner ear has the cochlea and
semi-circular canals.

OUTER Outer Ear

EAR
The outer ear is made up
of cartilage and skin. It
collects and channels
sound. It includes the
auricle or pinna, the visible
portion of the ear. The
pinna acts as a funnel that
Pinna
directs the sound deeper
into the ear.
EAR
CANAL
The ear canal is a
passage way and amplifier
for sound waves. It is a Ear Canal
tube that runs from the
outer ear to the middle
ear. It is lined with hairs
and glands that secrete
wax. The wax traps dusts
and bacteria.
MIDDLE Middle Ear

EAR
The middle ear contains
three ossicles, which
are tiny bones that
transfer the sound
from the eardrum to
the inner ear.
MIDDLE
EAR
The middle ear contains

transfer the sound
from the eardrum to
the inner ear.
INNER Inner Ear

EAR
The inner ear, is
responsible for the
body's sense of hearing
and balance. It has a
complex shape.
COCHLEA
The cochlea is a
snail-shaped hearing organ.
Cochlea
It is made up of three
chambers that spiral around
a bony core. The hair cells
inside the cochlea detect
sound and send the
information through the
cochlear nerve.
CHECK FOR
How can some animals like cats and dogs hear the
UNDERSTANDING
slightest of sounds?
Dogs and cats have bigger, more curved outer ears with
movable pinna.
This helps them to collect more sounds and hear sounds that
humans may not be able to.
CHECK FOR
What is the function of the ears?
UNDERSTANDING
