1 Read and find the word(s).
Christmas is a special celebration in the UK. People start to prepare for Christmas a few weeks
before the big day. They send Christmas cards to family and friends, and they go shopping for
presents. In many of the large department stores there is a Santa Claus who children can visit.
They tell him what they want for Christmas! People also start to decorate their houses and put up
a Christmas tree. They put special decorations on the tree, with a star or an angel on top. They
also put Christmas lights inside and outside their houses.

On Christmas Eve, that is 24th December, some people stand outside their neighbours’ houses and
sing Christmas carols. It is tradition to give the carolers money. At night, children put out some
mince pies, milk and carrots for Santa and his reindeer. It is a very exciting time for young children!

On Christmas Day, 25th December, children get up early and open the presents under the tree.
Later in the day, the family sits down to Christmas dinner. It is traditional to eat turkey,
vegetables, roast potatoes, cranberry sauce, stuffing and gravy. For dessert, there is a traditional
Christmas pudding, made with dried fruit and nuts and special spices.

Boxing Day, the day after Christmas, is also a day when families get together. They usually
watch sport on TV or play games.
