TRAFFIC ENGINEERNIG Prezentacija

This document discusses traffic engineering, which deals with planning, designing, and operating roads, streets, highways, and their interactions with other transportation modes. The objectives of traffic engineering include safety, speed, comfort, convenience, economy, and environmental compatibility. There are three critical components of a traffic system: road users, vehicles, and roadways. Transportation modes include road, rail, air, water, and pipeline transport. Traffic engineering is important for ensuring infrastructure is accessible, safe, and designed for all users. Highway safety engineering aims to reduce the frequency and severity of crashes.

Introduction
Traffic engineering is the phase of transportation
engineering that deals with the planning, geometric design
and traffic operations of roads, streets and highways, their
networks, terminals and relationships with other modes of
transportation.
Traffic engineering is closely associated with other
disciplines:
1. Transport engineering
2. Pavement engineering
3. Bicycle transportation engineering
4. Highway engineering
5. Transportation planning
6. Urban planning
7. Human factors engineering
Objectives of traffic engineering
• Safety
• Speed
• Comfort
• Convenience
• Economy
• Environmental compatibility
Traffic Systems

Three critical components of traffic

system are:
1. Road users - drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists
and passenger
2. Vehicles - private and commercial
3. Roadways - Streets and highways

• Lane flow equation: 𝑄𝑄 = 𝐾𝑉

Transportation Modes
• We have different modes, and these modes can be used
according to different factors that can affect person or
vehicle movements.
1. Road transport
2. Railways
3. Air transport
4. Water transport
5. Pipeline
Why is Traffic Engineering
Important?
• Since ensuring infrastructure is accessible, safe, and
designed for all road users is vital, a traffic engineer has to
be able to address traffic concerns for both new
developments and for existing infrastructures that need to
be reconstructed. Traffic engineers are highly trained and
experienced in collecting data related to road construction,
traffic signals, and land development in order to create
traffic studies that allow them to come up with new and
innovative ways of optimizing roadways and other forms of
transportation.
Highway safety

• Highway safety engineering is

a branch of traffic engineering
that deals with reducing the
frequency and severity of
crashes. It uses physics and
vehicle dynamics, as well as
road user psychology and
human factors engineering, to
reduce the influence of factors
that contribute to crashes.
Conclusion

• In the end, to conclude: Traffic engineering is a subdiscipline

of transport engineering that deals with the planning, design
and operation of streets and highways, their networks,
neighboring land use and interaction with other modes of
transport and their terminals.

• Understanding the importance of traffic engineering and how it

helps optimize the efficiency and overall performance of the
movement of people, goods, and transportation will provide you
with a full picture of what it takes to maximize traffic flow to reduce
congestion.
