SITZ BATH

A sitz bath is a type of therapy done by sitting in warm, shallow water. It can help
soothe pain, itching, and other symptoms in the anal and genital areas. It can also help
keep these areas clean if you can’t take a bath or shower. Sitz is from the German
word sitzen, which means to sit.
PURPOSE:
1. Help ease pain and itching from hemorrhoids
2. Help ease pain from an anal fissure
3. Bathe and soothe the perineum after childbirth
4. Clean and soothe the anal area or perineum after surgery
5. Ease prostate pain during prostatitis or after a procedure
6. Help ease period cramps
7. Clean the anal and genital areas if you can’t take a bath or shower
INDICATIONS

IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS
1. Warm water should not be used if considerable congestion is already present.
2. The patient should be observed closely for signs of weakness and faintness.
3. After the patient is in the tub or the chair, check to see whether or not there is
pressure against the patient’s thighs or legs.
4. Support patient’s back in the lumbar region.
CONTRAINDICATION:

MATERIALS:
1. Sitz tub half filled with water 105F
2. Pitcher of water 130F
3. Bath thermometer
4. Ice cap-with cover
5. Fresh camisa

PREPARATION
1. Take all necessary equipment to bathroom or treatment room.
2. Run water into tub and check temperature—105F or 40.5C
3. Place rubber ring at bottom of tub p.r.n. or line bottom with towel.

1. Review the medical order for the application of a sitz bath, including
frequency, and length of time for the application.
2. Prepare the materials needed:
a. Take linen to bathroom.
b. Fill clean tub about one-third full with warm water.
c. Check with your hand to determine that temperature of water is between
105°F and 110°F (40.5°C to 43.3°C).
d. Place towel or inflatable ring, if appropriate, on tub bottom and bathmat on
floor beside tub.
3. Perform hand hygiene and put on PPE, if indicated.
4. Identify the patient.
5. Close curtains around bed and close door to room if possible.
6. Put on gloves. Assemble equipment; to the bedside if using a bedside
commode or in bathroom.
7. Test the water in a sitz with a thermometer before the patient enters the tub.
If the purpose of the sitz bath is to apply heat, water at a temperature of 43°C
to 46°C for 15 minutes will produce relaxation of the parts involved after a
short contraction
8. Assist the patient into the tub and position him [Link] to see

9. Wrap a bath blanket around the patient’s shoulders, and drape the ends over
the tub.
10. Observe the patient closely for signs of weakness and fatigue. A cold
compress may be placed at the back of the neck or forehead, to help prevent
the patient from feeling weak. Discontinue the bath if the patient’s condition
warrants.
11. Test the water in the tub several times, and keep it at the desired
temperature. Additional hot water may be added by pouring it slowly form a
pitcher or by opening a hot-water fauce a little bit.
12. Do not leave the patient alone unless it is absolutely certain that it is safe to
do so.
13. Help the patient out of the tub when the bath is completed. Normally, a hot
sitz bath should be continued for 15 to 30 minutes.
14. Assist the patient to his bed, where it is best for him to lie down, and out of
drafts until normal circulation returns.
