Centrifugation Benefits in Grade 6 Science

This document outlines a science lesson plan on separating mixtures through centrifugation. The lesson objectives are to describe the benefits of separating mixtures from common products and enumerate the benefits of separation through centrifugation. Students will learn about centrifugation through classroom activities and discussion. They will discuss examples of centrifugation in their community and list benefits like separation of blood components, production of sugar and clarified beverages.

IV. PROCEDURES
A. Preparatory Activities  Review
Based on the illustration, what is the difference
between Sedimentation and Decantation?
[Link]/learn/icse-grade-6/chemistry/

 Unlocking of Difficulties
Read the following words
Centrifuge
Components
Stabilization
Clarification
Beverages
B. Motivation Lead the pupils to observe the picture and analyze
it.

What can you say about the illustration? Ans. It is
about centrifugation
What mixture is being separated? Ans. Blood
What machine is used to separate the components
of the blood? Ans. Centrifuge
Why do you think centrifugation is important? Ans.
Through centrifugation, the different components of
the blood can be used separately.
C. Activity 1. The teacher will divide the class into three groups.
2. Recall standards and safety measures when
doing the activity.
3. Distribute activity cards. (see attachment)
4. Have them choose their leader, recorder and
reporter.
5. Present the rubrics for doing group activity.
6. Supervise every group.
D. Analysis 1. Allow each group to present their output.
2. Analysis and discussion of pupils’ answers.
3. Ask questions to develop higher order thinking
skills.
4. The teacher will check and rate the groups’
outputs
E. Abstraction Another way of separating mixtures is through
Centrifugation. It is a way of speeding up the
process of sedimentation. A centrifuge, found in a
laboratory, consists of many test tubes spinning at a
high speed which inevitably forces the insoluble
substance to the bottom quicker. A washing machine
is a good example of this process. It spins quickly
and water flies out through the holes in the sides and
the clothes stay in the washing machine. Here some
of the benefits of separating mixtures through
centrifugation.
Separation of blood components
Separation of suspended solids from solutions,
example separation of clay particles from water
Skimmed milk can be obtained from whole milk
with the help of the process centrifugation
Getting sugar from sugarcane juice/ sugar
production
Stabilization and clarification of wine
The centrifugation of contaminated water allows
to extract dense substances inside
Production of beverages, juices, coffee, tea, beer,
soy milk, cheese
F. Application Fill in the organizer with the benefits of separating
mixtures through centrifugation that you observed in
your community and explain briefly.

G. Practical Applications of Cite specific situation that you experienced in your

Concepts and Skills in community where centrifugation is used to separate
Daily Living mixtures and explain why it is beneficial.
Possible Ans. Getting sugar from sugarcane juice.
Through centrifugation brown crystals are separated
from molasses, thus we have sugar to be used daily.
H. Generalization Can you enumerate and describe the benefits of
separating mixture through centrifugation?
Possible Ans. Separation of blood components,
Separation of suspended solids from solutions,
Skimmed milk can be obtained from whole milk,
sugar production, Stabilization and clarification of
wine and water waste treatment and Production of
beverages, juices, coffee, tea, beer, soy milk,
cheese.
Why separating mixture through centrifugation is
important? Possible Ans. Centrifugation is very
important in food industry, chemical industry and
medical laboratories. Like the separation of blood
components which is very important in saving lives.
