Simple Interest Calculation Guide

Group 2 presented a lesson on using appropriate formulas to solve mathematical problems. The objectives were for students to demonstrate proficiency in problem-solving by employing the correct formula for a given scenario. Examples demonstrated using formulas to find the circumference of a circle, simple interest, volume of cubes and rectangular prisms, and the area of a square. Polya's problem-solving strategy of understanding the problem, devising a plan, carrying out the plan, and reviewing the solution was also explained.

Problem Solving Strategy:

Use an Appropriate Formula

Jovelyn Manosa
Kcaryl Licardo
Objectives:
• By the end of this lesson, students will demonstrate
proficiency in problem-solving by employing an appropriate
formula for given mathematical scenarios.

• They will be able to analyze problems, identify relevant

information, and apply the correct formula to accurately and
efficiently arrive at solutions
I. Introduction
A formula is an equation that expresses a relationship among
different variables. Mathematical formulas are used to solve
problems in science, engineering, economics, business, and the
social sciences. Formulas are also used in everyday life to solve
consumer problems..
ll. Discussion:
People working in different occupations have reference

books containing formulas needed to solve specific problems. It

helps them to solve the problem quickly. For example, an investor

uses a formula to calculate how much interest she will get in

years. Interest is a fixed percentage of the total amount invested

paid to an investor each year.

Example 1: Polya`s Problem Solving
Strategy
There are 364 first grade students in Park Elementary School. If there are
26 more girls than boys, how many girls are there?

Step 1
Understand the Problem

Park Elementary School has a total of 364 first-grade students. The

problem is that we need to figure out how many girls there are if there are 26
more girls than boys.
Step 2
Devise a Plan

If we represent the number of boys by b, then b = boys, and b + 26 = girls.

To get the answer, we will use the equation b + b + 26 = 364.

Step 3:
Carry out the Plan
b+ b+ 26 = 364
2b + 26 = 364
2b = 364 – 26
2b=338
b = 169 boys
Number of girls:
b + 26
169 + 26 = 195 girls

Step 4:
Review the Solution

Since b represents the number of boys. 169 (boys) + 195

(girls) = 364, and based on the problem there should be 26 more
girls than boys. Therefore, the correct answer is 195 girls which
proves that the solution used is correct.
Example 2: Solving Word Problems involving
Circumference of a Circle

A plate with a shape of a circle has a diameter of 25 centimeters.

What is the circumference of the plate?

Step 1
What is asked in the problem?
The circumference of the plate.
Step 2
What is the formula?
C=𝚷 ×𝒅
Step 3:
Solve using the formula.
C=𝚷 ×𝒅
=3.14 × 25 𝑐𝑚
= 78.5 𝑐𝑚
Step 4:
Write the complete answer.
The circumference of the plate is 78.5 𝑐𝑚.
Example 3: Simple Interest

Anthony borrowed ₱150,000 from a lending

company where he needs to pay an interest rate of
3% annually. Find the simple interest rate simple
interest in 2 years.

I=? I = Prt
P = 150,000 = (150,000) (0.03) (2)
r = 3% = 0.03 I= 9,000
t = 2 years
Example 4: Finding and Solving Problems
involving Volume of a Cube and Rectangular
Prism
How many cubic meter of soil must be removed from an
excavation, 9m long by 6m by 5m?

V=I×w×h
V = 9m x 6m x 5m
V = 54 m² x 5m
V = 270 m³
Example 5: How to find an area of a
Square?

Find the area of a square box whose side measures 8cm.

Solution:
area of a square= 8𝑐𝑚 × 8𝑐𝑚
= 64𝑐𝑚²
