Nursing Care for Electrolyte Imbalance

The patient is at risk for electrolyte imbalances due to renal dysfunction. The nursing goal is for the patient to maintain normal electrolyte levels after 8 hours. Nurses will establish rapport, monitor vital signs and electrolyte levels routinely through assessments and labs. They will educate the patient and family on signs of electrolyte abnormalities and the importance of nutrition, hydration, and medication compliance. Pain medication, electrolyte supplements, or oxygen may be administered as needed or ordered.
